A really old, strangely suburban looking house on a small hill right in the middle of the forest. Me and my friends went inside and the place looked like it had just been suddenly abandoned. There was furniture still in place, cutlery and plates in the cupboards and in the chest of drawers upstairs there were old clothes still apparently clean. One closet we looked in contained old comics and newspapers from the 60's & 70's (this was about 1993). Round the back of the house was an old, 1960's style truck just rusting away. Who had lived there and why did they leave so suddenly? Who knows

317

u/PenguinSwordfighter May 07 '22

They probably died...

250

u/Supraman83 May 07 '22

Yeah that was my thinking someone with no family died, was buried or whatnot, and due to the remote location of the house it was forgotten about

190

u/hotbutteredtoast May 07 '22

I have to go to houses like this for business sometimes. Nursing home, death, etc. The old family farm, kids have moved away, nobody wants it so it just sits and rots in the state grandma had it in when she left.

29

u/bbaker78 May 08 '22

Is there a specific site to find places like this to buy?

14

u/hotbutteredtoast May 08 '22

Well, I think a start would be to look in rural areas that have a declining population.

There's some great urbex content on YouTube and that seems to be the most common reason. It's old timers that didn't want to leave their homes until they died or had to go to the nursing home. Nobody wanted their run down houses afterwards so they just fell into disrepair.

There's a crazy video I found once of this abandoned house where the owner clearly had some mental health problems. They had recorded hundreds of cassette tapes of different things. Them just talking to themselves. Conversations they had with friends over the years. The tapes got more crazy as time went on and then they started recording interactions with state social workers. It was clear they were evaluating them to see if they needed to be committed. You could tell either the person died or were committed and never returned by how the house was seemingly mid use when it was abandoned.

You just reminded me of something that happened in a country i visited. Malta is made up of 3 islands:malta, gozo and comino,From biggest to smallest. Comino (being the smallest island) has no residents, except for this one small family, or it did you could say. There used to be a lady, and her grandparents. They had a farm and lived in a small little house. It was heard that the grandpa died, and a while after so did the grandma, dont know what happened to the lady, and its kind of a new urban legend being honest, no one has seen them ever.

There was a house very similar to this near where my parents used to live. It sat so the top of the mountain, surrounded by orchards and berries. It had a great view, and was so old the foundation was made from boulders.

Inside it looked completely abandoned, kids art work still on the walls, calenders, clothes etc. It was really strange why such a beautiful cottage would just be left to rot. I mentioned it toa neighbor and they filled in the story. Evidently the house was also so old that it hada well under the kitchen sink. The owners had a toddler that was curious, and accidently fell down the well. it was a very small space. They couldn't get him out, and he died. At second look, you could see they had ripped the floor boards apart around the sink trying to get to him. It still makes me so sad to think about.

No, i imagine the fire department etc would have the proper equipment to retrieve his body. This would've taken place in the 2000s.

I stepped on what I thought was a small rock but it turned out to be weird and gelatinous. I've also seen tombstones in the woods.

You just suprised it. Rocks are soft and squishy, they just tense up when you touch them.

I've posted this before.

I was hiking through the remnants of a remote, long-abandoned town and the surrounding area. To get to as far into the woods as I was, you had to cross fallen trees over a creek three times. I had just crossed the third "bridge" and was about five miles in and something blue caught my eye just ahead of me.

There was a man, in his sixties at least, wearing blue satin pajamas, sitting in a tree. The closer I got to him the louder he laughed; it wasn't a maniacal laugh, but it set off all the alarms in my head nevertheless. He also wasn't wearing any shoes and looked well-groomed/cleaned.

I gave him a friendly nod as I passed and he just kept laughing. Then it stopped. I turned and he was gone. There was no branch cracking, plants rustling, nothing... He was just gone.

Still rubs me the wrong way. The area I was in was a pretty rough hike, very secluded. Not very many people venture as deep as I was that day. No idea what was going on there.

269

u/Tangled-Kite May 07 '22

“Over the Third Bridge” would be a great title for a spooky book or movie.

Unused condoms (Durex and Trust brands) out of the box, taped to a clothing hanger, hanged on a tree branch. It was so bizarre the only place near is an auditorium used for Sunday mass, it won't be weird if it looks like there was a party or camping that took place but the area looked undisturbed. The trail was nearby so maybe someone put it there as a joke but at that time it made me think if I was seeing things.

100

u/avsdhpn May 08 '22 edited May 08 '22

Probably a gay cruising area where gay men meet up for anonymous hook ups away from public. You'd be surprised where some guys would go to get their kicks back before online dating. The coat hanger with condoms taped to it could be from sexual health advocates trying to get guys to at least use protection if they're going to cruise rather than without. Edit: Like this for instance.

Fully decorated Xmas tree. Middle of summer. Neat as a pin it was, as if it had just been finished. Who ever did it came back at some point and cleaned it up, because it wasn't there next I did that trail a week or so later.

73

u/thisiscoolyeah May 07 '22

This one’s not that uncommon actually. Lots of folks will decorate a tree in remembrance of someone out in the woods. Sucks when they don’t clean them up though.

Probably going to get buried in the comments, but there's a little copse of trees between my woodshop and my house. Not enough to be even a small forest, and my family owns the land. Most of the time, it's just my family and I walking the path that goes around.

This was... four years ago I think. I was walking home, and saw something shiny in one of the trees. Someone had hung a big mirror, about a meter tall and third meter wide, about twenty, twenty-five feet up in the air. I wasn't the only one who saw it, most of my relatives had, but we didn't know who put it up. It stayed there about a year until a hurricane sent it - somewhere. Probably shattered into a thousand pieces.

u/Apprehensive-Dirt553 May 07 '22

In my country, some people hang reflective objects in trees to keep witches and bad energies away

In Wales. More like a story of what I DIDN’T see but still… I was 13 years old and lived in a tiny little village, and one day my dog escaped the back garden and went on an adventure by himself. Concerned about him getting into a field with livestock, I went looking for him around the village and remembered there was a patch of woodland up the hill that I’d never been to before. I could imagine the dog would love it there so I went to check it out.

I reached the woods and began to call out the dog’s name, hoping he’d come bounding out of the woods. But no sign, so I went further in. I came to a pretty large clearing and suddenly I felt a little creeped out. I suddenly didn’t want to call out for the dog anymore and thought I should be getting home. I left the clearing and began to hurry back the way I came.

Only this time I could hear something. There were very clear sounds of footsteps in the dry leaves following behind me. And I mean RIGHT behind me. As though someone was walking close enough for me to touch them. Only there was nothing there. I kept stopping to look around, and the footsteps would quickly stop as well. My skin was crawling but I had a strong sense that I shouldn’t run, so forced myself to keep walking calmly, but I was completely terrified. I managed to walk about ten steps with the mysterious sound keeping pace, until my nerve went and broke into a mad run. The worst part is that the moment I ran I heard a weird high pitched little giggle coming from behind me. I got the hell out of there and never went back.

The dumb dog was waiting for me, having made his way home. I’m glad he didn’t go into the woods. Might have been dognapped by the pixies.

u/ghouldozer19 May 07 '22

I recently bought about 9nacres of woods to use for camping. When I bought the property, it was the dead of winter (in Iowa) so I couldn't really walk around and scout it out as much as I would have liked.

The woods are badly overgrown, and this spring, I started working to clear some trails and areas for picnics, etc. There are two old barns down in the woods, with a nice little area between them, so I took my walk-behind brush mower down there, and spent an afternoon cutting down the waist high grass and saplings. After a few hours, I was left with a nice, clear little spot.

The next day, I went down to show the area to my wife, and there was a probably 80% complete deer skeleton, bleached white, right in the middle of the area.

There's no was I mowed and walked over it without seeing it, and obviously, the deer hadn't just died.

There are bits of it still down there, several months later.

In Japan. A hotel was abandoned before it was ever finished being built. It only became a cement skeleton, about 5 stories high. It was left that way to eventually mold back into the forest around it.

It’s an interesting small building to explore. There are halls that are unlevel to the point of hitting your head on the ceiling (think: Willy Wonka). There are stairwells that lead to nothing and one that leads to an unintentional hole in a cement wall. And on the top floor (but “inside” - as in, under the “roof”), is an old car - all smashed up - with seemingly no reason or method to have been up there.

Edit: Found some pictures I took:
https://imgur.com/a/magEo18/

Edit 2: Looks like u/Vanviator found some info.

Construction began in the early 1970s, but stalled in 1975 due to the bankruptcy of the contractor. Issues were further compounded by road access with the only entrance road being designated as a cultural property protection district.

The incomplete hotel includes a 5-story reinforced concrete tower and 17 cottages, with a total building area of 11,000 sqm. Total demolition costs are expected to be around 205 million Yen (approx. 1.9 million USD).

The hotel adjoins the UNESCO-listed Nakagusuku Castle ruins. The castle dates back to the 1400s.

66

u/tiny-spirit- May 07 '22

Living in Japan, want to see this. Where was it?

64

u/Vanviator May 07 '22

It is (maybe was?) near Nagasuku castle

I explored it ~2007 and it's super creepy. Don't know if it's still there as this article is from 2019. If it is, and you decide to go, make sure you take a buddy.

Due to rot and it being a habu snake haven, things can go sideways pretty quickly.

Just a side note, if you're military, this is specifically forbidden and could result in an Article 15.

Never do more than your rank can handle, lol.

23

u/webDEVILdog May 07 '22

Pretty sure this is it. Especially the habu snake / off-limits to military parts. Absolutely take a battle buddy.

12

u/Vanviator May 07 '22

Ironically, I only found it because of the off limits list.

11

u/webDEVILdog May 07 '22

Us too. That list is basically an invitation to these places.

18

u/webDEVILdog May 07 '22

Found some of my pictures. I think you can find its location on Google.

Stopped at a coworkers house one night after a late shift (around 2:30 AM) to drop off something she had forgotten. I didn't know exactly where I was but was familiar with the town and knew the highway I take home was very close, so I turned on my GPS just to get me back to the highway. Sometime after 3AM the GPS bugged out and started leading me in circles before finally spitting me out on some back road in a wooded area which I drove on for a bit until I saw a man just walking in circles next to the road. I am a young woman with small stature and have seen enough movies to urge me to just keep driving, but kept watching him in my rearview. When I looked back to the road I had to slam on the breaks because in front of me was an albino deer, just... standing there. It looked up then walked away and I kept driving. I saw lights behind me but by this point I was looking out for more deer or weird things and ignored them as they kept getting brighter and I thought "This guy is getting really close" so I looked up and there was nothing behind me. No cars in sight. This happened two more times. I still didn't know where I was and was about to call my boyfriend when I made a turn and came out right in the town where I live.

When I got home my boyfriend told me he heard the sound of our front door opening and somebody coming inside twice while I was gone, but he checked the house and didn't find anybody. It was a weird night and I don't think either of us slept very well.

I've been to this girl's house twice after this incident and both times my GPS has taken me right to the highway like normal.

This is a copy and paste of a comment I left a few years ago. This scared the hell out of me and I was never able to go back into those woods without carrying a firearm or feeling creeped out.

My husband, kid, and I live out in the middle of nowhere on a plot of land that's about 100 acres. I'd say probably 95 of those acres are wilderness with ATV and hiking trails that we, and several of the previous owners, created by exploring. We use that land for camping, hiking, and hunting. We like to find a spot, clear it a bit, and camp over night. There's so much space we've never stayed in the same place twice.

We've seen some kill sites, both old and fresh. Lots of animal tracks, places where deer bed down, etc. I've even spent a lot of time hiking solo while the kid is in school and husbands at work. Whether alone or with the family, we always carry a firearm for protection.

A few weeks ago, we decided to load up our camping gear and start a new trail. We mark the trails we make with spray paint on trees. We were pretty far in the woods, having hiked almost an hour when the atmosphere seemed to changed. I don't know who noticed it first but my husband, who was leading the three of us, turned around and gave me a concerned look. The birds had stopped chirping, the insects were quiet. There were no sounds around us. When in the woods, complete quietness is rarely a good thing.

We continued onward, hyper aware of our surrounds while our kid continued merrily talking. We came to the stream that marks the mid way point of our property. We stopped for a few minutes, my husband and I in a stare down with each other. We both felt something was off but didn't want to scare our daughter. I finally broke the silence and said I suddenly didn't feel good and that we should go home. My husband nodded in agreement while our daughter voiced her protest. Too bad kiddo.

We turned around and started back. After going a few hundred yards, still in silent wilderness, I looked to my right and saw a person crouched down in a ghille suit about 150 feet off our trail. I'm positive they saw that I noticed them but they never moved. I cleared my throat to get my husband's attention and when he looked back, I put my hand on the gun in the holster on my hip which caused him to readjust his rifle in preparation of anything. I sped up my family and we hurried back home. I told my husband as soon as we were inside. We decided to call the police and report the trepasser. Filed a report and was told to call again if we saw anyone.

A few days later, my husband and I went out alone and set up a bunch of deer cams. We didn't go back out into the woods for maybe a week, then he and I ventured out to retrieve the cam footage. Out of the 9 cams we placed, we caught a person in a ghillie suit in 2 images. We handed copies over to the cops to go with our report.

We haven't gone back out since except to check the deer cams. Haven't gotten any other trespassers. It freaks me out even more to think of the few times, while camping, that we heard walking near our tent in the middle of the night. We always assumed it was curious animals but now I'm not so sure.

30

u/she_isking May 08 '22

Can we see the photos?

12

u/CletusVanDamm May 08 '22

Asking the real questions here lol

26

u/glum_hedgehog May 08 '22

Ugh this story is going to live rent free in my head for years. My husband and I just bought 165 acres of woods and we're going to be staying in our camper until we build a house. Zero neighbors for miles, but we know people sneak around out there to hunt and we're getting cellular trail cams soon. We've been slowly exploring the property but haven't even seen half of it yet.

I joked that we're going to come across some crazy woodland hermit living out there, now I'm going to be picturing some whacko in a ghillie suit stalking us...

55

u/worthlesscommotion May 08 '22

Best advice I can give is to always carry protection. If you are uncomfortable with guns, consider bear mace. If you have kids, consider a gun. It's much easier to protect them from a bear/dangerous animal/human with nefarious intentions with a gun - it allows ample distance to remain between them and the threat.

We later found out who it was. It was someone who had worked for my husband, who had been fired for misconduct. He apparently had a thing for me and sent me some incredibly graphic and inappropriate texts, which resulted in his being fired. We found out it was him after he broke into our shed, in the ghille suit, and stole some stuff. We had a camera facing the shed and captured the ghille suit creeper, but didn't know it was him until he tried to pawn something that had a serial number registered to us. Pawn shop notified us, we notified police.

This happened when I was about 11 at a friend's farm, it's a little different to the question because I can explain it. We were pretending to be like explorers or something wondering into the woods when in the distance we see a very large black animal, a panther. Even tho it was relatively far away we were horrified, we only saw it for a little while then it wandered off. The strangest part of this is that i live in Australia in which panthers aren't native so we were really confused, however after some research we found out that there used to be circuses that would come with all different animals including panthers and apparently there were many reports of animals escaping and also many sightings in the past.

I spent a lot of time at my mother's father's house in the woods of Michigan. My brother and I got lost a lot, but if we could find the train tracks we could always get back. One time when I was about 8 and my brother was like 11/12, he didn't want me bothering him and ran away leaving me alone in the woods. I was crying and wandering around when I came to a house with 2 horses in a pasture. I went and knocked on the door for help. This lady who looked like a fucking older librarian answered and looked really shocked. I whined about my brother leaving me, and she told me to stay at the door while she went back in for something and then came out to walk me home. I was telling her about the train tracks and she said she knew where they were. We get to the tracks and I'm cheering and pointing in the direction of my Grandpa's house, and I turn back and she was just gone. Not a trace of her. I went ahead and crossed the tracks and followed the path to the house. My brother was already back and they were literally all outside about to go looking for me. Grandma had made dinner and we all went in to eat. I told grandma that I wanted to bake cookies for the lady that helped me. She thought that it was one of the neighbors until I said she had 2 pretty horses. Apparently none of the neighbors had horses, and when I said her house was on the opposite side of the tracks she said that that was all thick woods and there were only houses on this side of the tracks. I was adamant about where I saw the lady and her house. So the next day grandma packed a bunch of sandwiches up for a picnic in the woods, and to see where I saw the lady and her house. It was a long walk, but we made it to the pasture except there was no house and no horses. The only thing in the pasture was my hat that I lost while wandering around before finding the lady's house. We still had our picnic. Not sure if it was a ghost or fay.

63

u/kidfriday May 09 '22

Haha, I love how you mention her being shocked to see you, because it makes me think of some ancient forest spirit minding her own business in her house when suddenly a human child accidentally wanders through her magical barriers and shows up at her door. And she’s like “how the actual fuck did you get here?? My dwelling has been undisturbed for centuries and this snot nosed little human just bumbles in?? Ok fine I’ll take you home but I’m doubling the cloaking charms on my house so you’ll never find it again”

It’s like something out of Miyazaki

18

u/JulesLovesYou1993 May 12 '22

You met one of the Good Neighbors! I love stories like this, where the unknown isn't evil but helpful.

I just love the idea of some Sidhe woman minding her own business, vibing in her cottage, when this human child interrupts her routine like "My brother sucks and I'm lost."

I live next to the woods like you can literally see it out of my window. Well one night I was sitting on my bed watching TV when a light flashed through my window. I looked around and there was nothing there so I brushed it off as me being crazy. About 5 minutes later it happened again, so I looked around again and there was still nothing. The third time it happened I was getting ticked off and assumed it was one of my stupid neighbours kids who always mess around. I opened my window to tell them to piss off but as I looked closer the only thing I saw was a black purse I had lost about a week ago when I went clubbing. Something in my head was screaming to get away from the window so I shut it and closed the curtains, locking my bedroom door and calling my dad. He came over immediately and grabbed the bag from outside, as well as locking all the windows and doors, and checking the whole house. We looked through the purse and nothing had been taken, but there was also a small note crumpled in it, that said something along the lines of "watch your back". My dad called the cops, who also did a full sweep of the house and took the bag back with them. The next morning they found a flashlight and a back pack, which had a small collection of pictures of me that had been taken over what looked to be the course of a year. Never had anything like that happen again. Weird.

223

u/Flavius2008 May 07 '22

I was thinking the bag was a bait for a trap.

160

u/dragn99 May 07 '22

Wow. Insanely smart call getting your dad to come over. If whoever the stalker was saw him come over, followed by the cops, he might have gotten scared off by that.

If you haven't, you should look into some security cameras for the perimeter of your house.

I once walked through the undergrowth (i.e. off the trail) with my then-girlfriend when we came across this spot where a few empty plastic bags were lying on the ground (strange because the woods are otherwise super clean), a pair of gloves and, most confusingly, the official ID card (= passport) of a young woman.

A ball of glowing light and/or fire gently blowing in the breeze

92

u/LaMadrinax May 07 '22

When i lived in Mexico for a few years I would see balls of fire in the sky at night. I lived by hills in a ranch , a few trees but not much. I would ask my grandma what that was and she’d say it was witches. I guess everyone out there believed the same thing.

43

u/LuizJa May 07 '22

Yeah I was gonna mention this. Here in Mexico is very common in towns and ranches to assume those things are witches.

30

u/FlowDiscombobulated8 May 08 '22

here on indian reservations in america, we also have the belief that witches are balls of light/fire in the woods!

14

u/Soon2BProf May 08 '22

We had a similar belief in the Caribbean. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soucouyant

The soucouyant is a shapeshifting Caribbean folklore character who appears as a reclusive old woman by day. By night, she strips off her wrinkled skin and puts it in a mortar. In her true form, as a fireball she flies across the dark sky in search of a victim.

14

u/LaMadrinax May 08 '22

I didn’t realize how similar cultural beliefs are. The belief in Mexico is that these witches would transform into balls of fire and look for their victim. They would focus on drunk men or they’d also look for newborns to suck their blood. They make themselves look younger , they transform into animals , elderly, young ,for their own benefit. Witches are very common en Mexico, especially in ranches / small ranches. There’s a lot of stories about them. I’ve also heard about skinwalkers in the native culture . Very similar as well.

I could tell you that the time i lived in Mexico there would be odd paranormal things that would happen over night. I was always scared to sleep at night. The one thing I remember is having perfectly good healthy cattle a day before , then next morning some of the cattle was sucked dry which falls into the myth about el chupacabras.

Me too. Looked crazy, like uhh… kinda had colors like the tail of a comet. Stayed absolutely perfectly still after traveling VERY fast, and VERY smoothly from the other end of the horizon. And came right to us, we were in the middle of the woods, sitting on a trail, after midnight in the dark, telling creepy stories. We stood up and just stared. Then it got brighter. It looked just like a streetlight turned on in the middle of the woods, for like 10 seconds! I had enough time to look around, see shadows of all the tress and vegetation, and see my friends jaws just, on the ground. It was just fucking INSANE. And beautiful. It wasn't ball lighting. Everything about it was just too precise. I feel really lucky to have seen something like that. There is more out there to the universe that science or society hasn’t grasped yet, and I’ve seen it right in front of me.

Many plastic bags with nothing really in them but random odd things tied to trees. Sure, it could have been a homeless person but us kids att (like 12+) of us lived in those small woods behind the church every single day. We never saw anyone like that, ever. Passing through I guess, but why so many bags...still wonder.

I was hiking up in the mountains. I was on a relatively steep spot and could hear a “thump” under ground and I could see no holes or entrances . I heard it several times. I figured it was some animal I a burrow, but never figured out what it was.
Another was when I was driving through a woods area. It was late at night and a grayish looking creature was wobbling down the middle of the road(size of a large raccoon)It didn’t look like anything I have seen even in pictures. I turned the car around to get my lights back on it and it was gone.

Have you considered it was... a large raccoon?

Yes, but I know what raccoons look like. My guess would be an opossum, I’ve actually never seen one in the wild.

I've told this story a lot, so I'll just do a quick summation:

Tried to learn to do extended hikes to traverse the Appalachian trail. Hear foot steps outside of my tent at night. Circling, in slow deliberate steps. Never missing beat. Just steady even steps. The most frightening part of it was that I never heard anyone or anything approach or leave my camp site. The steps were just there and then they stopped.

I've revisited this memory many times. Considering how little experience I have with wildlife, I think there is a good chance it was just some animal that I'm not aware of. But then given what's happened to me in the past several years there is a chance that it wasn't an animal. It is strange that I would be so convinced it was fuckery then, but less convince now.

I'm not sure I know what I'm doing.

16

u/ZeN_HiKeR May 08 '22

What has happened to you in the past several years, to make you think it's not an animal?

May not exactly fit the title, but...

When I was a teenager, I worked at a fireworks stand that was run by my friend's family. It was in a rural area: they owned a few acres of land, had the fireworks tent at the front of the property and the house towards the back, but no lights in between. My friend's mother would prepare dinner for all the workers and we'd take turns going back to the house for dinner.

One night, I was going to the house for dinner by myself. I felt something on my arm. I thought a bug might have landed on me, but it was really dark so I couldn't see anything. I stopped walking for a second. Then I started hearing this low, raspy breathing right next to me. There weren't any people around me and it didn't sound anything like a bug. It was like a slow, asthmatic wheeze.

I started getting really freaked out. I reached my hand down to my arm and felt... something larger than I expected. I furiously rubbed my hands all across my body to try and dislodge whatever this thing was, then ran as fast as I could to the house. When I finally got to the safety of the house, I could see a small red mark on my arm, but that was it.

To this day, it's probably the most freaked out I've ever been.

24

u/ChuushaHime May 07 '22

what did it feel like when you touched it? like fur? skin?

30

u/TheShinyKoala May 08 '22

It felt firm. I don't recall feeling any skin or fur.

17

u/infinitemarshmallow May 08 '22

I lived on a large cattle station in nsw, australia until i was 16. A few years before we left, my dad and i were out looking for a few lost cattle in the back paddocks which back onto quite steep, rocky mountains. We were crossing a shallow creek when our horses started snorting and getting flighty. There was movement above us up high in the trees. My horse started rearing and just as dad reached over to grab my reigns to settle the horse down, something big and grey dropped from the trees right inbetween us. Our horses took off in opposite directions. It took all my strength to pull my horse up. Dad eventually came to me and was quite anxious about getting us away from there. I asked him "whats wrong? What was it?"

" It was a roo" he said. "It had been gutted and dead a while by the smell." He threw another look over his shoulder and got us moving a bit quicker. I heard him mutter to himself "how the hell did it get up that bloody tree." He never went out without a gun after that day.

Theres stories about big cats out in the Australian bush. Its the only explanation we could ever come up with.

I’m from Australia, me and a mate where out 4x4ing in a pine forest around 3pm-4pm which it’s still fairly daylight. If you could imagine lots of steep up and down hills with barely any dirt trail to drive on and a heap of pine trees. We where heading down around the middle of the Forrest down a hill and it flattens out for a while (I’d imagine we would’ve been in the middle of the Forrest at that stage…) all of a sudden it goes nearly pitch black I shit bricks cause it’s like wtf… drove about 100m towards the other side and there’s this man in a hoodie picking mushrooms… nearly pitch black and he’s picking fucking mushrooms with like an old mesh type brown saggy bag… it was really creepy cause we couldn’t see his face as it was too dark (as his face was either fairly back in the hoodie or had no damn face) but it was like icky creepy vibes so we fucked off really quick! Few days go past get a few of the boys cause we told them about it being so dark then the weird bloke so a group of about 3-4 Utes and be less creepy with a group, couldn’t find the damn thing for the fuckn life of us… mind you this Forrest isn’t huge huge however we covered enough ground to go through the whole Forrest, couldn’t find it at all… no explanation to this day haha

In Nepal, few years back. There was a huge earthquake and thousands of people and their homes were destroyed. Even our home was in a serious condition and needed a renovation. For the time being we and our neighbors planned on living in our local neighborhood school for few days. They provided us with rooms & a nice breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Since many people were there, we had a tiny space to adjust. I was 8, I had to take a dump in the middle of night I woke my dad up, the restroom was outside, me and my dad turned on the flashlight. Remember there is a huge jungle behind the school toilet.

At first we saw around 5-7 cats sitting and meowing in their deep voice on the wall that divides the school and the huge jungle. I took my dump and came outside. Me and my dad were shocked. We saw a man wearing fully white clothes coming towards us from the jungle.

It was terrific. I screamed and woke like 20 people up. Even my dad was pretty shocked since he had never seen it before. We stayed for few more days and I never even looking at the side of the school where the toilet was.

(btw the cats were not there when we came out of the toilet)

Even till today, whenever I walk past that school (basically everyday) I recall the same thing and I'm scared to walk alone at night in that street.

Not really that interesting I guess, but that is my experience.

A small Native American girl (traditional braids and clothes, and moccasins)without a mouth, nose, or eyebrows, just pitch black eyes. waving for me to come into the woods from behind a tree. the girl was trying to lead me away from the hill I was on. my nana and grandpa didn’t see her, none of the other campers saw her. the only thing who saw her was the lady next to our tents dog, it was barking and growling and trying to run at her. This was in Appalachia.

I was living in the woods on some state land for a little while a few years ago, as I was out of options. I could hear cars approaching this stop from a mile away and there weren't more then a couple houses within walking distance, so I usually knew when there were people around. Yet, near where I found an old cobblestone foundation, about 50 yards from my camp, about every night I saw what looked like an oil lantern, where a match would strike, even in the wind, the lantern would light, the match would go out, and the the lantern would bob forward for about 15 steps and then the light would disappear. I'm not all about ghosts and shit but I still have no explanation for that.

This is story of my father when he was just a teenager. In high school, my father had to walk for at least 5km everyday to get to school (this was in the 1960s, motor vehicles are very rare in the rural areas). He always took a short cut through the woods. One morning, a farmer saw him just walking back and forth through an area in the woods. The farmer shouted to call his attention, and my father snapped back to reality. My father claimed that rows of very tall trees have been blocking his path and he could not find a way out of the woods. That was not the first time it happened to someone in that area. It was believed that playful spirits trick people by giving them illusions. Some accounts even say that some people got lost in the woods for days, only to be found asleep or dead on the ground. I passed through that area several times (it's mostly rice paddies now), but I never experienced something similar.

36

u/Porpoise555 May 07 '22

Interesting... something similar happened to me. Me and my friends found these tunnels made of branches it was like all the trees bent over to purposely make a tunnel system. Or people did although I'm not quite sure how they would have done it.

About a month later we went back and could not locate this formation or structure or any evidence that it existed. Just normal woods the whole way. I suppose it's possible wind ruined it between then, but it kind of spooked us. You would think at least some trace of it would remain.

35

u/ghouldozer19 May 07 '22

This has happened to me before. I even took my wife back a month later because it seemed like the most magical place in the world. Like a tunnel of trees with no sound and this enchanting haze of green and gold. I took her to exact spot in the woods, and I grew up tracking and hunting for food as a kid and know my way around forests, much less city park woods, and it just wasn’t there. Like, there were no signs of limbs being cut or anything, nothing. The trees just were not bowed together anymore.

u/DakezO May 08 '22 edited May 08 '22

So I grew up in Chadds ford, pa. The one that really struck me didn’t occur Out in the woods or in a field, it happened in my basement. I was about halfway up my stairs and I felt a strong shove and a black cloud whooshed up the stairs ahead of me. I definitely heard thumping footsteps of about 3 other people going up the stairs. I was alone in the basement

Most of my other stories involve being in the woods and hearing the footsteps of what I’d say are about 5-10 people around me in the woods despite being alone. One time I was in the cornfield next to my house and kept feeling like someone was following me, and when I turned around there was some dark shapes. I’ve never run so fast. They never chased but they were always around. So yeah, that’s about it.

We ( my friends & I) heard rumors of a haunted plantation in the woods. After awhile of searching & asking around about it. We located it.

The story was.... it was a plantation w/ a cruel owner. There was a slave rebellion & the plantation owner's family was killed along with the plantation owner. Eventually the towns folk mobbed up & they attacked the plantation to smash the rebellion. The leader of the rebellion was supposedly a large black man. And a large black figure was supposedly sighted many times there.

It was definitely creepy AF... There was a big 2 story home w/ 5 smaller homes off to the side & a old barn. One of the building had old baby clothes in it another had hay all over the floor. The big house had a large kitchen & living room. There was at least 4 bedrooms upstairs & 2 downstairs. The back half of the big house was falling in.

Grew up in the woods of new england, my home and all of my neighbors houses were built on former wetlands and so there was a lot of undeveloped land that made up our "backyard", aka a couple acres of dense woods complete with creeks, streams, small stone walls, and stuff like that.

My brothers and I would go exploring in the woods as children and there was just weird stuff everywhere, from seemingly new trash (beer cans and milk jugs with recent sell by dates) all the way to rusting car parts that had to have been there for years. This all took place in the late 90s so we weren't strapped with cellphones or anything like that.

The weirdest thing that happened one day when I was out with my younger brother, I was 11 or 12 and he was 10. I was walking back toward our house because I was tired when I came across a man in the woods, I didn't want to freak my brother out so I just kept beckoning to get here right now and we need to go home, he never saw the man. I am assuming it was just a neighbor that was doing exploring of his own, or could have been someone planning for more homes to put in and was looking at boundary lines, but I had never seen anyone back there before and I don't really know what would have happened had I not made it clear that we were leaving now and then booked it home with my brother in tow.

Hiking in the woods of western Maine . I came upon an old abandoned homestead. The house had collapsed and an old tractor with tools in the tool box .The tractor had settled into the earth up to the axles. The only structure still standing was a small stone (sturdy) family crypt. The door was half open so I looked inside. There were two coffins badly deteriorated, the lid was off . The only bones I saw were long bones but no skulls.

As if animals had gotten to the remains.

Over all the place had a calm, restful feel to it.

37

u/TheDeltaOne May 07 '22

When I was younger in the woods near my parents house I saw a man with a rifle sitting on an old tree.

There really is nothing weird about it, people go hunting all the time in those woods and I was on the path they use to come back to their cars.

But the way he was holding the rifle while sitting, the way he stood up in panic right as my dog started trotting his way AND the fact he was clearly crying felt weird on the spot.

He waved at me, said something I didn't heard and I passed him saying hello.

It took me 25 minutes of walking before I realized I might have interrupted his suicide attempt. I tried going back but he wasn't there and told my parents about it. They called the police but nothing ever came out of it.

Maybe I was wrong tho. Maybe he wasn't holding the rifle like I remember and maybe he wasn't crying but It really felt weird.

When I was 11, my school hosted a camping trip for a group of 12. I was one of the lucky few chosen to go on said trip. When we arrive at the campsite, the boys and girls are put in separate tents, in separate areas. The bathrooms were down a hill, and if you had to go to the bathroom at night you were that “nature is your bathroom.”

Well, on the 3rd night I had to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. I got up and out of the tent and walked behind a tree to use the bathroom. Immediately I felt something or someone around me. Keep in mind I have no light source, it was all pitch black and I couldn’t see anything more than a few feet in front of me. I remember hearing a growling sound.

That sound was enough for me to book it and I ran straight for the tent. I alerted one of the camp counselors about what had happened and they went to check it out.

As they come back, I see them go on their walkie talkies and alert the other counselors of scratches on a tree. They told my group to go back to sleep, and so we did.

In the morning, I was still awake after a sleepless night. A few minutes before I knew everyone would wake up, I snuck out of the tent and went to go see what had happened. When I got to the spot I had been just a few hours ago, I see claw marks on a couple of trees.

To this day I have no clue what made the growling sound, nor do I know what made the claw marks on the trees.

Really big holes. Several very large holes, fairly close to each other, that seem to serve no purpose. Ten feet wide, deep enough that if you jumped in you’d have to have help getting out. Was someone preparing to bury a bunch of people? Was someone punishing their kid by making them dig holes? Did they hear there was buried treasure out there? We’ve never figured it out.

55

u/momerathian May 07 '22

I remember years ago my parents were going through the process of splitting their 23 acre property into smaller parcels to sell. They had to have tests done to check for ground water, I think they're called perk tests. Anyway, they dug several large holes in a field that kind of sound like what you described.

46

u/TheGigor May 07 '22 edited May 07 '22

How far apart? How neat were the holes? In a plantation or natural wood? Accessible by a small excavator?

Maybe someone official was preparing to plant some young trees? Or maybe someone had removed/stolen some trees? I've heard of landscaping services nicking trees from woods to re-plant in a client's garden.

23

u/theyarnllama May 07 '22

Me again. I need more coffee, I only answered one question. The holes looked like they were dug by hand. It’s a natural wood. I don’t think an excavator could get in there. It’s pretty thick with trees, and they’re older.

Mostly what is growing there is oaks and pecans, and those grow eeeeeevvvvverywhere. If someone was stealing trees, maybe what was there was something else, and therefore more interesting.

13

u/TheGigor May 07 '22

Interesting. It doesn't sound like what I had in mind.

If it's natural woods, my tree planting idea doesn't make sense.

The tree thief thing would require a truck to get to it, and maybe one of those golf-cart sized excavators. But I realize now there would be obvious tracks left behind. So that idea seems wrong too.

14

u/theyarnllama May 07 '22

Really close together. Seven or eight of them, randomly placed, and fairly wide, so the area they covered was pretty big. But they themselves were all very much a set of holes.

35

u/PutnamPete May 07 '22

In the Adirondacks you'll find large round holes where an old growth tree fell over years ago, rotted into nothing and all that's left is the hole from the dirt that the root ball pulled up.

27

u/Fapdooken May 07 '22

Growing up my grandparents owned land in the coastal redwoods of northern California. The land had many years prior been heavily logged and giant piles of scrap wood had been covered with dirt. If you didn't know you'd think it was just a hill now but on the back side were sink holes like you mentioned. Some a lot deeper.

I spent a lot of my childhood in very rural New England, which meant a ton of my time was spent outdoors. One particular house we lived in was literally the center of nowhere. The trail I liked to hike by my house had a section that went through a swamp, and it had raised wooden platforms to help walk over the flooded swampy parts. One of these walkways was always partly overgrown with water reeds which at the time where taller than me, and the path curved so for a time you would just be standing on a thin board surrounded by a wall of reedson either side with nothing else in sight. One day I was walking the trail and right before I got to the reed path I heard voices talking ahead like someone was walking the path in my direction. Totally normally, it's a public trail even if its rural, so I saw other people from time to time. However, the voices stopped in the reed path and nobody came out even after I waited several minutes. I finally figured they must have stopped to take pictures or something and I could just squeeze past them on the boardwalk ahead, I was tired of waiting. As soon as I stepped into the reeds I heard whispering start up again and expected to pass someone, or at least hear them go back out the other way. Instead, as I got to the center most point of the reed path where nothing is visible, I heard a huge crashing sound like people had gone running off right into the reeds and into the woods. I suppose it could have been teenagers smoking or drinking and scared of getting caught, but the thing that made it so unnerving was that even though I could hear the reeds moving and snapping as something ran through them, I never once heard any footsteps or anything in the water. Remember this path is raised on platforms because there's a good foot or two of stagnant swamp water beneath it and all around for several hundred feet. The water never made a sound like it had been disturbed. Also, there's nothing in that direction for someone to go toward. The woods went on in that direction for upwards of 25 miles, and the only path in or out was the one I was on. I ended up running all the way home and didn't go back on the trail for a long time because it freaked me out. Still don't really have a good explanation for what that might have been.

u/Ray_ASYLO May 07 '22

My parents have told this story many times throughout my life so I’ll try to paraphrase it as best as I can.

It was 1972, my mom and her best friend (my god-mother) were on a double date at one of those cheesy make out spots you see in movies. It was about 11pm and they were parked next to one other car only. Everything was great until they were getting ready to leave and the four people in the car all saw, what they described as, a giant ball of light, almost like fire. It was about 12 feet tall and equally as wide, and coming at them quickly. My mom said it felt like a scene from a horror movie trying to start their car in time. It continued to chase them until they reached the city limits and then it just disappeared.

The kicker was that my moms future husband, my dad, was in the car next to them but neither of them had met each other at that point. It wasn’t until 20 years down the road when the three of them (my mom, her best friend and my dad) were all swapping stories and they realized they were parked next to each other that night and saw the exact same thing.

There's a small patch of woods where I live. You could walk across it in less than an hour. It's entirely safe and has marked trails. People somehow manage to get lost in there and I can't explain that.

u/Unknown_Captain May 07 '22

I remember when I was about 6 we used to live next to the woods so we'd explore. I went in with a girl next door and we found a motorbike. It was mangled and burnt and so was the ground around it. Because I was a kid it never occurred to me that it had been stolen and dumped, we together just assumed that it was either Ghost Rider or that someone had got lost and died here on their bike. That freaked me out for a while.

Lived in the alberta, canada countryside for most of my life. I will never forget the creature i saw when I was 8/9. I was in my cousins tree house alone waiting for them to come back. I was looking out the "window" (no glass, it's just a cut out in the wall) and I noticed a big black mass about 30ft in the forest. I first thought it was a bear but then I noticed it had bright red eyes. It was like they almost glowed. It looked right at me and then stood up. It had a bear like head but it's body wasn't bear-like and it looked insainly tall. It made a deep guttural groaning sound as it slowly lumbered/shuffled towards me. I hid under the window and closed my eyes. I remember hearing it walk under the tree house and then keep going. I never saw that creature again but I never stayed in a forest alone since.

I used to live in the hogbacks by Morrison CO, was always up until like 5 am. One night I heard the weirdest moan in my life. Like a uuogh but deep as the ocean. I'm an idiot so I got my BB gun and went out back. I saw what looked like a dude shambling around but with what looked like rotted clothing hanging off in strips. It shambled away slowly heading toward my way out there neighbor's 8' fence. I checked it through my scope and it looked like matted ass dreads hanging loose but completely covered. It out of no where TOOK THE FUCK OFF for like 10 feet and I thought it tripped, then shambled up to my neighbor's fence and was just scraping it's hands there for like 20 minutes. It was a little taller than the fence... Then it just dropped it's hands to the sides and stood there for another 5 minute and BOLTED up the hill towards C470. The next afternoon I woke up and went to the neighbor's fence and it was covered in gore. Bunny entrails hanging off the top of the posts, blood everywhere and a rabbit pelt on the dirt. It was bizarre. Never saw or heard anything else like it. I've seen and heard black bears around there, but nothing like what or whomever I saw that night.

I have never watched shows about aliens or bigfoot with any intensity but one weekend the wife and I were stuck inside because of storms. So we watched this show with this dude who supposedly is a survivalist who wasnt a bigfoot researcher but was intrigued because of his encounters he believed were bigfoot. They were walking in this area that had these crazy trees all pulled down and twisted up that supposedly couldnt have been done naturally and they were to big for a human to do this way. So anyways all that for this. I live in the sticks surrounded by state land that has big hills, swamps, ponds big enough to almost be lakes. Never heard anyone in town talk about bigfoot or anything, I have heard weird screaming and what not that sounds like what they played on the show but this time I seen first hand what they portrayed on the show. So we go morel mushroom hunting on this land the day after we watched the show and about a mile into these hills we come upon this huge wad of trees all twisted up together, they were woven together like a rope. They werent little either, bigger than a person could pull down and twist up. They ranged from 6-8 inches at the base of the trunk. I take a few pics cuz it was cool and we move on. About 45 min later we come upon another one and now my wife is getting a little nerved out because now the woods are dead silent. We have our son who is 7 so we decide yeah its time to leave. I unsnap the strap on my 1911 jic. As we start walking a limb about 2 inches in diameter and 3 foot long comes wizzing past us. I look at her and I point in the direction we came from and I said get moving and take our son. I pull my 1911 and walk quickly backwards covering their back. I have no idea who or what is fing with us but we werent sticking around. Last thing that happened was this loud knocking like someone slamming wood on wood. We finished walking back to the house not really saying anything to each other until we got home.

TL;DR I found a dead girl and no one believed me.

When I was 4 I would run around the woods with my friends in Michigan. One day I was playing by myself and ran up on a covering with a bunch of junk. 3 walls only. I came up on the back/side and crept up around the side. Laying there was uncovered was legs. Pale white almost bleach legs with a lil bit of dirt on them. Crept up further and saw no pp. Then I saw hands arms chest and face. One eye was half open and she had blonde hair. Her foot was cold and and I ran. Ran all the way back home and told my mom. She thought I was playing make believe again and I DRUG this woman out to the shack. She kept stopping and saying I'm going the wrong way and there's nothing here so it took quite awhile but we found the shack and I ran up and the girl was gone. I could see the imprint in the dirt but my mom couldn't. She rolled her eyes and we went to get ice cream. She noticed something was off about me for a month and so she said because I wasn't acting normal. I was spacing out and zoning out at random times and would draw the dead girl constantly to the point she and my dad sat down with me and we talked about pretend and real life. We never found out who owned the shack or maybe she didn't believe me and never looked but I always see her when I close my eyes. Creeping up on her laying there naked with dirt in places a normal person would've wiped it off.

A cougar, in the woods of southern NC.

I was a young teenager, left a bonfire around dusk and walked to the treeline to pee. In the Sandhills of NC there is this kind of brown stringy grass that grows everywhere. Anyway, in the grass about 30 feet away, just standing and watching, was the biggest cat I've ever seen outside of the zoo. Like way too big to be a bobcat. Its head and shoulders were above the grass. The color was almost a perfect blend with the grass. I was scared and started to run, but it just slow blinked me, turned around and slowly walked away into the woods.

Of course nobody believed me, and wildlife experts say that this creature has been extinct for a century, so who knows what it really was.

43

u/[deleted] May 07 '22

Old coworker saw the same thing, in eastern NC. Said it had the biggest eyes.

40

u/HSIOT55 May 07 '22

I had one show up one night/morning in SE Texas near Galveston. I got home one night and I could just barely make it out in the darkness standing behind my car. It was obviously too large to be a dog especially the paws. I just slowly backed away facing it the whole time and it just watched. The next morning my mom called me and told me to stay inside because it was walking around the buolding I was living in at the time. I could hear it sniffing and snarling through the door.

34

u/awesomecat42 May 07 '22

Cougars aren't extinct, there's just not a know population in the NC anymore. The idea that one wandered here or that an illegal pet escaped isn't far fetched at all.

38

u/WhatMyWifeIsThinking May 07 '22

The eastern cougar is declared extinct, but that doesn't mean what this person saw wasn't a cougar of some other subspecies. One that's wandered in way out of their normal range or escaped a preserve. Every now and then I hear of sightings in NETN and SWVA, trail cams, footprints. I'd probably dismiss most of the stories if my own mother hadn't had her own run in with one sniffing around her rv one night. Next morning, large cat prints in the ground under her window. Not black bear, not coyote, not bobcat. Freaked her out.

I was walking my dog at 7.30am before work. I was in woodland that's also an old Victorian cemetery (quite normal in London). A man appeared all of a sudden, with no shoes and he was walking towards me holding a top hat in his hands. His feet were squelching in the mud and he didn't seem to care at all. He just said 'good morning' and carried on walking past.

I lived in a part of Texas with dense forest. My friend and I were in middle school and enjoyed exploring at night. We learned that the drainage pipe on the side of the road was big enough for us to crouch through, so we hopped in and started walking, leaving markers to guide our way back.

After 30 min to an hour of walking, we popped out of a manhole that landed us in the middle of nowhere deep into the woods. We kept walking until we came across an abandoned two story cabin. No road leading up to it, no means of accessing the cabin by vehicle. What could be argued as the “front lawn” was littered with half-buried toys, all of them looked very old in design. Plenty of porcelain dolls were buried in the yard.

The windows were too dirty to see inside, so we broke a window with a rock to get inside. What could have been furniture at one point in time had rotted away so that only iron frames remained. The floor of the cabin was COMPLETELY covered in old empty oil cans, the kind you see in 50s cartoons. We couldn’t go upstairs because the staircase had collapsed from rot, so we left and started making our way back to the manhole we came in from. As we were walking away, I took a look back at the cabin. In the window of one of the second story rooms, I swear to God I saw a child staring back at me. He looked to be about 8 to 10 years old, and had short straight black hair. I am convinced that I saw a ghost that day.

I was doing survival training as part of the army in really northern Canada and as I was digging my foxhole for the night I distinctly heard a woman call me by my name. First and last so it wasn’t one of my platoon members. And sometimes on night watch we would see red lights just beyond the trees. We always used nvg’s and tvs’ but we never saw anything behind the light.

Edit: nvg’s and tvd’s are night vision goggles and thermal vision devices.

Found a crucified grizzly bear about 200km (120 miles roughly) into the canadian forest, nowhere near towns or even roads so i'm not entirely sure how they were able to lift such a big animal up a good 30 feet up the tree considering the average weight of a male grizzly can get up to 600kg (1320lbs) and this was definitely not an average sized grizzly, although not the biggest i've seen. By far the most "we should get the fuck out of here" moment i've ever felt. I realize that sounds hard to believe, especially given that it's the internet and people love to make huge claims and frankly if i wasn't the one telling the story i'd probably doubt it too, so feel free not to believe me, there's no hard feelings if so.

People are saying it was a mountain lion/cougar/bobcat/whatever, but I live near Alberta and I believe this story 100%. It was probably someone's illegal pet that got loose. It's a lot more common than you'd think lol. There was a cheetah wandering around Creston BC a few years back

I’m from Texas, originally and while lots of people are doubting you, I don’t. Texas actually has the largest population of tigers in the world, versus the rest of the world combined, or at least so I’ve been told multiple times, because of private legal sanctuaries and collectors and then the ease of illegal smuggling. Sadly, people will smuggle these majestic animals into their homes/keeping areas as cubs without fully understanding that a tiger can be almost 20 feet long and 2000 pounds. Once they outgrow the inadequate pens they let them loose. It’s happened more than once in Texas. Then innocent people die and then the poor tiger is killed when it never should have been there in the first place.

Oh I've been waiting for this!

So, Context. When I was young i went to an elementary school that was situated with a large field at the back, this was where the track was, the baseball diamond, etc. And that field was surrounded on three sides by a chain link fence with a forest area beyond it (well, 2/3 forest, 1/3 field but you get the idea.)

This wasn't a big area either, it took maybe five minutes walking straight back to reach my friend's house and the neighborhood behind the forest.

the interesting thing about this wooded area was that the fence had two exits built into it. one in the far back left corner, which lead to a trail straight to that neighborhood, and one in the middle of the righthand fence which led... nowhere.

There's no trail through that section of woods and directly on the other side of it is the back of a grocery store. in fact, the entire right third of the forest is inaccessible due to the massive invasive blackberry bushes that fill it.

Now I live in a small town. not small as in population (my high school had over 2000 students and it was one of 4 in the area), but literally, physically small. The main commercial area of the town is small and cramped and right next to the school, and the freeway cuts right through town.

So when you're at the school, you hear cars. always.

This will be relevant I promise.

So one day after my friend and I are well into middle school we decide to go hand out at the elementary school on a Saturday, just vibe on the playground and stuff. And I bring up the weird exit on the righthand side of the field, and we decide to check it out, cause we've never been in there, and that summer there were pretty suspicious goings on in the woods as a whole that we were trying to keep an eye on (there was a literal gang trying to set up shop but that's another story)

One more bit of context: the fence. from the field when you look at the righthand fence near that gate you can't see anything inside, all the plants are pressed so close to the fence that leaves are sticking through.

So we walk in.

And everything is wrong.

For one thing, it goes dead silent. no birds, no wind, and no. cars. we just took five steps closer to the main road, and there's no car noises. I'd call that a big red flag if I've ever seen one.

Next we notice that the ground is bare. unlike the other areas, there's no undergrowth in this section of forest. which is Very weird, considering we just saw how thick the underbrush was on the other side of the fence.

so I turn and look. And there's no young trees, no ferns, and no blackberry brambles. The entire fence line for a good thirty foot span is completely clear, you can see right down to the track where my friends and I would walk every recess. If you crouch you could see the whole field.

Now, you're free to not believe me, but I fully believe that I'm very sensitive to supernatural bullshit. And my "gtfo" alarm was going off like mad.

But I decided to turn around and give the place a good look anyway.

so I scan, right to left, and everything looks pretty normal until I hit the left side of my vision.

and parallel to the fence are a series of archways.

Young trees, stripped of their branches and bent over to form half circles, easily ten of them if not more, each one getting steadily smaller than the rest. unnaturally perfect, clearly intentional. and there was a single lone footprint, bigger than either of ours, in the muddy dirt in the middle of the arches. We left sincere tracks in the mud walking in there, there's no way a single shoe print should be on its own. And it had rained the night before, which meant whatever did that had to be there in the past... ten or so hours?

And I'm not an idiot, so I grabbed my friend and we RAN out of there. And yes, we double checked, and from the outside of the fence you hear cars, you hear birds, and you see all sorts of branches and leaves poking through the fence. We never went back there, and that area of forest got mowed down for a hospital a couple years ago, so I guess I'll never know what I walked into.

u/Maars_Bars May 07 '22

I actually have a two stories.

Number One: there was this old campsite. 30, 40, maybe even 50 years old. The tent was constructed of rotting branches and old leaves. It was situated next to what me and my siblings called "The Ravine" but it was probably an old river.

The strange thing was, there were circumstances that can't remember that lead to us digging through the fire stones. We saw what looked like precious gems under the old ash. My siblings re-buried the stuff, and got us to leave.

We went back to the campsite every so often, but it was never in the same place, and the stuff wasn't in the ash anymore. I never really figured out what happened.

Number Two: I was in the same woods with my best friend, and we were just chatting, climbing the fallen trees. She and I fell into "The Ravine" from the other story. Its actually a family landmark. Very noticeable. But when we got out, the woods looked different. After about half an hour, we started to notice someone else in the woods with us. He(?) wore a brown coat and camo pants. We could never see his face, as he never got that close. He never made any noise, other than the crunching on dead leaves.

We eventually got out of the woods, and me and my best friend were still shaken. I mean, two teenage girls being followed in unrecognized woods by an older man (I assume they were male. General figure and size). Its scary stuff.

Not something I saw, but something I heard. I was in upstate NY, hunting in the woods during deer season last year. I had gotten to the stand I was going to sit in, during pre-dawn hours, so it was still incredibly dark. I wasn’t scared, even though it was my first time being in the woods while it was that dark, it was actually really exciting to be out there. And I was really looking forward to possibly getting a monster buck I would talk about for years, who’s points would keep growing with every re-telling of the story haha. Anywho, there I was, sitting in the dark, in freezing-ish autumn temps, with a rifle across my lap. I was like 10 feet off the ground too, so that also kept my nerves in check. It was so quiet and dark, and I wasn’t used to that. I just wanted the damn sun to come up so it would start to warm up a little and so I’d have enough light to take a good, clean shot. I was dressed warm enough, but my father in law advised me against wearing thick gloves so I could shoot without them getting in my way, in case I needed to take a quick shot. So my hands were freezing cold, and I kept warming them up in my pockets, armpits and by breathing on them. I’m not sure how long I was out there but it felt like hours, and it was so damn dark. I think it was a little cloudy too, because I don’t remember being able to see the stars, and there was a minimal amount of moonlight. And my eyes kept playing tricks on me in the darkness. I was told deer can be unnaturally quiet, so I kept scanning the shadows and thinking I would see something moving, but it would quickly turn out to be nothing. There was no wind, rain or anything else happening. Everything was very still. After a while of nothing, out of nowhere I heard a thumping sound. It sounded like a deep thump, like one you could feel in your chest. And it started off slow, then quickly picked up pace, like if someone was thumping on their chest.

THUMP. THUMP. THUMP-THUMP-THUMP-THUMP-THUMPTHUMPTHUMPTHUMPTHUMPTHUMPTHUMPTHUMPTHUMP

Something like that. I don’t know what it was, but I assume that was male turkey(gobbler) drumming, because I heard something similar when looking up turkey calls. It only happened once, and then it was quiet again for what seemed like another long stretch of time. I thought to myself “cool, I wonder what that was”. And then something different happened. Another sound started up, but I could not for the life of me imagine what could make this sound. It started off low, and then picked up volume slowly until it was decently audible to where it sounded like someone dragging a cardboard box across carpet. And it came from in direction, maybe like 50 yards away from my stand, and seemed to remain in one spot. It went on for a very long time, and would quiet down to a whisper then slowly pick up volume again, over and over and over. I could not explain it. And it was continuous, keeping the same rhythm. And staying in the same spot. I thought maybe it was wind, but nothing was moving, no leaves or branches or anything. And it wasn’t raining either, otherwise I would feel and hear it all around. And the sound stayed the same distance from me, only changing in pitch. I’ve never heard anything like that in the woods before, and haven’t since.

After a while of this, the sound slowly quieted down until it was completely gone, and all was quiet in the woods again. Then, a few minutes later, the sun started coming up. And birds started singing, and squirrels started moving about in the leaves, and everything else started waking up. It was the strangest fucking. I stayed in the stand another hour or two before my father in law came looking for me (we were on his land) and fetched me to head back to the house, which was quite a ways from the spot we were at, in the woods. We talked all the way back, and I told him how I didn’t see a single damn deer and how chilly it was. He chuckled and gave me tips and other pieces of wisdom for the next hunt. Eventually the house was in view, and we were walking out of the woods. I didn’t want to sound stupid, and I didn’t want to ask in case it was nothing, but my curiosity had gotten the best of me by that point, and I really wanted to know what I heard out there. I told him about the thumping sound, and he nodded and said that it was probably some kind of animal, although he wasn’t sure what. He didn’t seemed fazed though. I nodded and then told him “I heard something else too, but I’m not sure what”. I explained the whole thing to him the best I could, and he listened without saying anything or nodding or making any sort of facial expression. And then he changed the subject. I wasn’t unsettled about the damn sound until that very moment, because that was just strange to me that he didn’t acknowledge what I had just told him. I let it go and didn’t ask again. I did ask my brother in law about it later, but he couldn’t explain it either. He said it was probably everything warming up and all the vegetation defrosting, but I told him how the sound seemed to only come from one direction, and stay in the same general area. And how nothing else was moving at all it was incredibly dark, but I could see enough to make out that no leaves, branches, trees, NOTHING was moving. He couldn’t explain it and the only thing he could say was “Huh. That’s really weird”. And that was that. None of my buddies at work could explain it, and I haven’t heard anything like that since.

There is this huge forest area that me and my cousins love to explore in the summer time.

One afternoon we decide to go and explore, about an hour into our walk we hear the loud cry of a baby from far away. We decide to follow the sound and eventually got to a small clearing. Upon entering the clearing the crying was louder but it suddenly stopped.

However we did find two tents, food, clothes and lots of rubbish. We quickly left before anyone came back…

This forest area is really unsafe to live in let alone have a baby in. It was definitely unexplainable and creepy..

The mattress in the back of our schools forest woody area. People used to go there and have sex all the time and it was kinda gross. But no one knows how it got there. I’m not sure if it’s still there I haven’t been back at that school in years.

One time my friend and I went to the woods at night and kept hearing something call our names. I turned around for one second and my friend was gone I looked for him everywhere but could not find him. I called his phone but there was no signal. Then I heard him calling my name so I followed his voice and I came upon a cliff and my friend was nowhere to be found. I decided to go home and see if he was there and to go ask for help but when I got home he was playing video games in the living room. I was bit upset because I was in the woods the whole time looking for him and he was at home playing video games but when confronted him about it he gave this confused look and told me he hadn’t left the house at all and had never gone to the woods with me. He also said he had seen me walk out the door and that when he called my name I completely ignored though I do not remember that happening. Till this day I have no clue as to what happened

Here is my story copy & pasted from another thread. Lmk what y’all think, positive or negative!

My story:

It was late Sept 2018 and my gf & I were riding around the Riegelsville, PA/Milford, NJ area, two small, quaint towns divided by the Delaware River. The time was between 9-10pm when we pulled into the Riegelsville boat launch (which is actually on the NJ side). I parked my car on the far side of the lot backing up to the abandoned railroad trestle and we got out, we start talking while still in the area of the car, I crack open my first (and only) beer of the night. Soon after we arrive and proceed to relax I see movement coming from the area of the Delaware River, from a wooded area. I saw a being, very tall, dark, and what appeared to be long hairy arms walk across the other end of the dimly lit parking lot. When it crossed in front of the portajohn portable toilet it was taller than the toilet unit. At first I thought “huh, that’s weird, there must be homeless people living here” then I wrote the long hairy arms off as this homeless person wearing a large, puffy winter jacket which again I thought was pretty odd as it was a mild late September night when I was wearing shorts & a light weight zip up jacket. Just in case I go into the trunk of my car and pull out my tire iron, I drag it across the ground to make noise in the hopes of scaring off/avoiding confrontation with “the homeless person/people here”. However I felt very small and powerless wielding the tire iron. Moments later, from about 50 feet to the right of us, down a steep embankment running into the river we hear 2-3 LOUD distinct, what I have now learned to be “tree knocks.” We both freeze and my gf suggests maybe it’s time to leave as the feeling in the air is heavy. I say no that we will not be scared away. We continue to chat briefly when all of a sudden, a large humanoid shadow appears over us which would be standing directly behind us on the railroad trestle. This figure has large, broad shoulders, a large head. I freeze and say to my gf “shhh, stand still and don’t peep” I’m watching the shadow of this thing in front of me when I see its shoulders kind of dip back in one fluid motion while I see again the same long, loose hair as the first “person” I saw cross in front of the portajohn. I get very nervous and say “get in the car! get in the car!” I hop in and peel off out of there. In the car I’m stammering “what was that?!? what was that?!?” I’m shaking and scared trying to connect the dots to what it was I just saw. I do about a 2 mile loop and quickly come back and do a u-turn in the boat launch to shine my headlights onto whatever I saw, but nothing was there. I drive back into PA over the bridge and pull into the Riegelsville Inn. At this point I’m shook to my core not understanding what it was I just saw, so shook up I’m nearly crying. At this point I did not pin it as a Bigfoot, I just simply did not know. After we returned back to her house I could not sleep, I’m searching the Internet high and low about what it was I could have possibly saw and that’s when I stumbled upon Bigfoot tree knock videos. I froze, the knocks in those videos is exactly what we heard. I woke her up to confirm this. Only then is when I realized I might have seen a Bigfoot. That is when the facts started settling in…. The large being that passed in front of the portajohn was TALLER than the toilet unit. The “puffy winter coat” sure looked like long, hairy arms, not arms in a puffy jacket. The tree knocks. The figure that appeared in the shadow over/behind us had the same scraggly hair and large broad shoulders. To this day I’m not even sure of WHAT I saw, the signs however all point to a Bigfoot. I was so disturbed by this encounter that the very next morning, I actually went back to the boat launch in an attempt to find anything that can help me piece together what happened. I searched the area where I first saw it appear to no avail. The location we heard the tree knocks from was inaccessible as it was steeply downhill and directly into the river. To this day I’m still stunned by this encounter and honestly haven’t told many people. But I know what I saw and forever engrained in my mind will be the imagine of the large being crossing in front of, TALLER than the portajohn, with its long hair hanging off its arm while taking long strides into the woods on the other side. Also worth noting that Bigfoot or other cryptic or paranormal creatures were not even on on my mind!

That is my story, please let me know what you think!

Strange times when everything is silent.

During the spring and fall, I always go out hunting, and while you might be thinking it's just the animals hiding from me and my rifle, I still see them, and it's almost like they're as confused as I am. I'll never fire my rifle when it's quiet, for fear that I'm not gonna hear a thing.

As strange as that sounds, I'm serious. One minute, I'm walking in a valley, listening and feeling the wind as I hear the sound of squirrels chattering above me, walking and crunching through the leaves beneath my boots, and then nothing. Dead silence. When I take a step on dead leaves, it sounds like nothing. The squirrels stop their arguments. The wind just stops flowing outright. There's a creek that goes through where I hunt, and it's happened there too.

During the spring, I've sat and relaxed near the riverside, enjoying the sound of the flowing water, and periodically, I've spotted deer walking along the riverbank, sometimes stopping and drinking from it. Then it happens, complete silence. No more sounds of water, despite it still flowing. I know I'm not alone; the deer notice it too. They'll stop and look up if they're drinking, and they'll stop walking outright if they are.

Midwest forests are something else. I don't know how to describe it, but they are.

In the middle of a rural, 3rd world country(Transkei). We drove off-road for 40km from the closest town. Crossed a river, hiked a couple KM and then went through a milkwood forest.

In the middle of the forest we found a proper porcelain toilet, on a wooden platform, over a longdrop hole.

Deep in the woods, many miles from any path or road:

We came upon a perfectly maintained 2-seater outhouse standing amid a dense forest of trees and overgrowth.

There was no path leading to it or signs of human activity. Yet there it was: painted, screens on the window vents, toilet paper, magazines - in the middle of nowhere.

I one time found an ant with a gold thorax. Nobody around me thought that it was weird but I haven't seen another one like it to this day.

About twenty years ago my wife and our two children (twins, they were about one year old at the time) moved into a house that sat right on the edge of about 40 acres of heavily wooded land in Kentucky. We had a dog. He was a good dog and a great security system. We named him Zeus. This dog was a tank. He was a stray. A mutt of some kind, and I don't know what breeds he was made up of, but he was huge. My neighbor told me once that he saw Zeus get hit by a car on the nearby highway and Zeus just walked away like nothing happened. Not a scratch on him. Anyway, Zeus stayed outside most of the time and, while he wasn't much of a barker, on some nights he would occasionally bark at the local nocturnal wildlife in the nearby woods.

One night however Zeus started barking incessantly probably around 11:00 PM. I tried to ignore it for a while, hoping he would stop, but he just would not stop barking. He had a very loud bark and I was afraid he would wake the kids, so I grabbed a flashlight and went outside to see what was going on. I found him out back at the edge of our small vegetable garden, barking at the woods. I could tell he was on edge and he barely acknowledged my presence when I stood beside him. He just kept barking. I pointed the beam of my flashlight at the tree line, expecting to see the eyes of a raccoon or a possum or maybe a rabid coyote (healthy coyotes usually stayed well away from the area), but there was nothing. Just trees and darkness. I gave old Zeus a good pat and a scratch and this seemed to soothe him for a moment, but as soon as I stopped petting him he immediately started barking at the trees again. I realized the only way to calm him down would be to take him into the woods so he could examine whatever it was that was freaking him out.

I walked to the head of a nearby trail that cut into the woods and Zeus followed. He seemed happy to be going. He and I had walked that trail many times and he usually stayed right by my side. But on that night, we had only made it a hundred meters or so into the woods when Zeus bolted into the trees to the left side of the trail. I called for him, but he ignored me. I could hear him making his way quickly through the thick underbrush, moving away from me. I called for him until he had moved so far away that I couldn't hear him anymore. Shit, I thought. I'm going to have to go in after him. Bushwhacking in the middle of the night sounded like an awful idea, so I continued down the trail looking for a break in the underbrush where I could pick my way through in the dog's direction.

A couple of minutes later I stopped walking when I heard something crashing through the woods, coming toward me. The sound seemed to be coming from the general area where I thought Zeus would have been, and it sounded like him, so I assumed he had finished his investigation and was coming back to me. The source of the sound grew closer and closer until it was near enough for me to predict where Zeus would reach the trail, which was a spot about 5 meters ahead of me. I focused my light there, but something else came out of the woods instead. It came out right where I thought it would and my flashlight afforded me a good look at it, but it's difficult for me to explain what it looked like. It was just a thing. If I had to describe its color, I suppose I would say it was gray, but that's not exactly right. I'd estimate it was a little less than a meter in length, but I could see no head, no legs, no tail, no appendages of any kind. Just a kind of amorphous, grayish, seemingly opaque thing. The thing moved across the trail in front of me from left to right, but it never touched the ground. It was just kind of gliding through the air at about waist height. Whatever it was disappeared into the woods on the right side of the trail and a moment later Zeus burst onto the path from my left and he followed it. I realized then that the crashing sound I had been hearing seconds before had been the dog and that the gray thing hadn't been making any sound at all as it moved.

Zeus seemed to lose track of the thing soon after he crossed the path and he came back to me. Afterward, he and I went back home and we never spoke of the incident again.

Friend and I are hiking several miles to camp in the wilderness. It started raining with sleet, it’s about 35f degrees and late afternoon. We are about 9 miles in. There are no connection trails near to this trail. We see a older guy walking toward us on trail. The first person we have seen since starting. He’s got zero equipment soaking wet and wearing, tennis shoes, t-shirt with blue jeans. He slurred it’s beautiful out here, very quiet and the colors. The closest town is backwoods and known for drugs and meth. Friend and I have a couple of thousand dollars worth of hiking camping equipment on us. We get nervous talking to him and start walking away. He followed us 50 yards back for another 3 miles and then we didn’t see him again. We didn’t get much sleep that night at camp.

At the local football pitch around 3-4am. Its next to an expressway so the road lights cover the middle area of the pitch and at the far end of the field there is a woodland area. When out at that time im always on alert especially in the pitch black, I often avoid other people out at that time. Anyway one time I see a white figure at the opposite end of the field (the fields had 4 full sized football pitches) the whole time im watching thinking who wears bright white clothing from head to toe at this time. I watch the person walk from the furthest pitch to the middle of the field. The guy walks into the light and instantly disappeared I shat myself and deadass rubbed my eyes to see if i was imagining it or i had lost the guy. Admittedly I was smoking weed but I had seen the white figure before i took my first drag I never really get paranoid from smoking but I shat myself and ran home. The whole time i was freaking out thinking I saw some a ghost because 5mins down the road theres a golf pitch which has its own local horror story. About a decade ago now a father killed his wife and kids and buried them on the golf course.

Camping with the cub scouts. This was probably 2009 or so. Way out in bumfuck, PA. Nice campsite area with a huge cabin but undeveloped forest for miles outside of the cleared areas. One night we went on some sort of candlelight vigil walk/hike. Huge single file line and all the “troops” or whatever the hell they’re called are together. I remember feeling like I had to look at this thing, like I was compelled to by nature itself. There was this tall, probably 6 ft, bunny man. That’s the best way to describe it. It had this really malevolent, twisted face and a pair of real beaten-up looking ears. Like if a skinny-ass, grown man was wearing the suit from Donnie Darko, except it was pink and he walking with this really unnatural gait where he seemed to be making conscious decisions to independently move his muscles. Almost like whatever it was was trying to imitate human movement. It was very unnatural and surreal, and for the brief 5-10 seconds I watched it, I just had this awful feeling that something was terribly wrong. I looked away for a moment, but curiosity got the better of me and when I looked back where I saw it, it was just gone. This was a very moonlit night and with the candles/torches you could see out quite a bit before things got dark.

I’ve never mentioned this story to anybody up until now. Looking back, it was probably some asshole looking to terrify some children on a scouting trip. However, I still remember how wrong the thing seemed. It could only be described as uncanny and definitely unnatural.

My dad has a house in the mountains of 'upstate' New York, he bought in the early 2000s. We still lived in the suburbs of Westchester, so we would go up and stay at this house on weekends while my dad did his best to fix it up. When I was little I was into paintball and from the city so I was always shooting up things in the woods.

Next to my dad's house in the woods, was this house that was falling apart. I could see it in the distance from my bedroom window and it always gave me the creeps. Half the ceiling was caved in, and it was fully furnished, an old Ford Fairlane still in the drive way. Everything was completely rotting away.

One time my cousin came up that weekend. We took the paintball guns and went out to shoot up the woods as usual lol. We walked over to the old decrepit house and thought it would be fun to shoot out all the windows so we did. It was fun, we continued to find other thing to shoot up and went back inside to play grand theft auto 3.

The next weekend I went up, but didn't visit the abandoned house, the weekend after that, my cousin came up with us again and we went out with the paintball guns again. We walked towards the old house and.. all the windows weren't broken anymore.. they were still full of cobwebs and pollen. Me and my cousin were confused as hell. So we shot them out again. We stopped going up for a couple months after that, and by that time the house had been demolished.

I still can't explain how.. the windows either fixed themselves, or it's like it never happened. When I've talked to people about it, they've suggested "maybe the 'owner' had them replaced?" But as I said they were full of cobwebs, and who would replace windows to a house with no ceiling? lol

A unsettlingly large tunnel system in the woods that might have had a dead body in it. (Maybe not tho, I was like 7)

I used to live in Vermont, in a house that backed up to the woods. I liked to play back there. Well I have this really bad habit of exploring draining and sewer systems because it's fun.

When I discovered this system in particular system with a friend, it hit me as odd due to the sheer size. This is a small town we're in, and nothing there would justify suck a large concrete tunnel in the woods. My friend wanted to explore it, and I definitely wanted to explore it. We made it around a mile in, when this smell hit us. It was freaking disgusting. Being 7 we chocked it up to sewage. Until we saw the lump of something with bugs all over it.

That, dear strangers of reddit, was the 'TIFU' moment when we knew we had to run and run fast. I didn't sleep for a week, but we never told our parents. You'd think my love for exploring these things would have stopped there. It didn't.

When i was younger, i was playing in the woods with my sister and my step-brother, we all were riding our bikes super fast and bombing hills, then my sister pointed out how there was somebody off in the distance, we looked and sure enough there was a creepy man probably 50-60 years old, recording us, he walked away when he saw we pointed him out, we tried to chase him but lost him.

As kids my friends and I used to spend all of our time together in the woods around the acreage I grew up on. Maybe 20 minute car ride to the nearest town. Fairly remote. Lots of forest. No people for miles kind of environment.

I remember one occasion where we had walked to a new section of land that we'd never visited before. As we were looking around I remember glancing at what appeared to be a small, weathered tree fort that had since collapsed. As I was staring at it, a man-shaped figure appeared in front of me. It was featureless and translucent, as in I could see through it, but everything looked slightly distorted. There was a moment where i didn't really realize what I was seeing - or it didn't register - before the shape kind of did a double take, like it knew I could see it, and it took off running.

I remember shouting "hey" as I managed to break out of my confused stupor and chase after it. It was fast. It ran into a small grove of trees that I didn't have a good line of sight into. I wasn't that far behind whatever it was, but when I entered the grove, the invisible man thing was nowhere to be found. It felt uncanny, like watching someone walk past a tree and not emerge on the other side. The whole situation kind of blew my mind. I recall asking myself, "did I just somehow imagine this whole thing?" But the shock I felt when it "saw" me and took off seemed too real to be made up. I still think about it from time to time.

I was once on a walk in a nearby forest. I was only a few minutes away from home. I remember when i was about to start leaving the forest until suddenly i felt like someone or something was watching me. I tried to look around but nobody was there. I started to walk away from the forest but then i saw this black figure just watching me. It didn't look like an actual person. I quickly continued towards the end of the forest but i felt the figure following me. I looked behind me and it was just standing there i looked quickly to my front and then i looked behind me again but the figure wasn't there. I think i was just hallucinating but i never went to the forest again.

I was out hiking a few years ago and all of the sudden got this awful feeling of dread and goosebumps on the back of my neck. A few seconds later I was swarmed by flys and as I was swatting at them I heard a crackling sound. A big tree was randomly falling down right where I was standing. Luckily I made it out of the way. Still freaks me out to think about.
