I'd like to know this, too - as I already have all of X1, X2, X3R, X3TC & DLC, and all X Rebirth content.

So, how's X4 and its DLC?

4

u/skrble Apr 21 '22

Just another question, how did you enjoy those?

3

u/MysterD77 Apr 21 '22

I played some of X3R which I did like, but....X1, X2, X3TC & AP are basically backlogged.

6

u/skrble Apr 21 '22

Then why buy more? :)

5

u/MysterD77 Apr 21 '22

Gotta collect them all at some point, you know?

Yeah, that's Completionist in me and all & the guy that has over 2000+ games on Steam and God knows how much more if you start including every other service (Origin, UPlay, GOG, etc etc.)

I'm not depressed about not getting to backlogged games. I have them and can access them whenever I feel like it - provided DRM and other junk of that sort isn't in the way, of course.

I've played some games, lost interest, and chucked 'em aside - it doesn't hit me, then onto the next one.

You know, I'm glad I have copies of Alpha Protocol b/c - well, you know, you can't buy it on Steam anymore. But, yep - I have this very underrated CRPG in my backlog, ready to go & play whenever; played through it twice already. [shrug]

Alpha Protocol. I literally mentioned it in that sentence/paragraph.

My point was: some games don't stay available forever, so...it's often why I grab them. You never know, when games have licensed stuff in them.

u/timmyboyoyo Apr 23 '22

Which games are favorite

2

u/MysterD77 Apr 23 '22

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines is my favorite game of all time.

7

u/MisterFlames Apr 21 '22

X4 is what Star Citizen should have been. A very good space sim.

2

u/Stevesd123 Apr 23 '22

Does it have planetary landing?

3

u/MisterFlames Apr 24 '22

No. You can get out of your ship and stuff like that, but not on a planet.

But interacting with planets is a thing.

1

u/hrabbitz Apr 22 '22

I thought you were going to say "out of Alpha."

3

u/Tartooth Apr 21 '22

X4 is great

2

u/mak0-reactor Apr 21 '22

As someone who's played hundreds of hours in X2, X3:R, X3:TC and X3:AP ... I just can't seem to get into X4. It's definitely better than at launch and better than X:Rebirth but it feels kinda more tedious and UI heavy than previous titles and I keep going back to Avorion which took everything I liked about X3 but has better combat and custom ships.

1

u/Tartooth Apr 21 '22

I really enjoy it

I never played any X games before 4, but I bought it with all DLCs last month or so. It was surprisingly fun and I still feel like I've barely scratched the surface after 50 plus hours. Definitely a "podcast game."

19

u/incertnom Apr 20 '22

Don't own 4 but I picked up the rest last time they ran an X Humble bundle.

There huge time sinks but if you've got the patience and the spare time, 3 and Albion Prelude are fantastic.

Many people get put off in the start due to the learning curve and not knowing how to get started, if that's what holds you back I'd REALLY RECOMMEND some of the many guides suggesting starting strategies and ways to play different styles in the game. They'll showcase enough of the game to get you interested whilst teaching you enough to play your own way at some point.

2

u/VinniTheP00h Apr 21 '22

β€œLast time” they ran an X bundle? Are they regular? How often do they run them? Asking because I am not that pressed into buying it now, before I clear my backlog and get some joystick, and can wait if, for example, future bundle includes the rest of X4 DLCs.

3

u/incertnom Apr 21 '22

Wouldnt say its a frequent thing, this is the second time theyve ran a franchise bundle, first was the Egosoft bundle and that was several years ago but X3 has been in another Humble bundle.

I've been using HB since HB1 so have seen and bought most things, franchises like Civ, Killing Floor and Arma/Bohemia have bundled up multiple times and its becoming more common for Humble to run franchise bundles in my opinion, I can only speculate that you'd be waiting for years for another one to come round, must be said pure speculation though based on past bundling history.

11

u/MysterD77 Apr 20 '22

Wait, so X3: Reunion isn't in here?

Granted, I do own it on Steam, GOG, and Retail (on like 6CD's!) already - still seems weird that it's missing here.

12

u/Jdban Apr 20 '22

What type of game is this? What games is it similar to?

26

u/Silyus Apr 20 '22

Disclaimer: Only played up to X3:AP, dropped the franchise after what they did in Rebirth.

It fits very well a specific niche in the space sim games. ED focus on dogfights, mining etc.. with one ship, EVE on people connections and emergent behaviour, SE on ship building/customisation with "voxel" parts, SC on a complete experience and NMS on exploration + base building.

X drops the multiplayer aspect in favour of letting the player having more impact on the whole universe. Crucially, AFAIK this is the sole space game that allows you to disable ships, take over control of them and..easily program their AI to patrol, or follow a certain trade route, or escort other ships you own. You can also build stations, connect them to cover a certain supply chain and use your own AI-managed fleet to perform trade routes.

Dogfight, mining, etc..is still present here, but done better in other games. If you play X it's for the joy of entering a system and seeing your fleet patrolling or being able to finally build the manufacture stations in that strategic location etc..

I haven't played X4 and I'm not sure if I want to buy this bundle. Oh it's also worth mentioning that AFAIK there is no VR support, which is a bummer for a space sim, but also kinda fitting for a game which major selling point dances vicariously along the line of a spreadsheet simulator.

u/Mothix Apr 21 '22

Hey just curious what game is 'SE'?

3

u/Silyus Apr 21 '22

Space engineers

3

u/nermid Apr 20 '22

I skipped Rebirth. Was it that bad?

4

u/naomika_iwafumi Apr 21 '22

Problem with the series is, the company likes to release really buggy 1.0s and the players are like the beta testers. The game gets fixed over the years/dlcs to a respectable standard but it is frustrating for people who bought the game at launch.

I started with x3:tc and then ap, expecting great things I bought rebirth, rebirth was a trainwreck at launch, mission triggers stuck and bugs galore, it only got better after the dlcs and major version upgrades came out, by then 3 or 4 years have passed. I enjoyed rebirth for what it is (not as a x series of games) but I can understand why there were so many negative reviews.

I bought the deluxe version of x4 at launch, same kinds of issues, map ui disapears after a while, launched 30000km off the center of the map randomly causing the sector map to stretch and causing the game to stutter, auto pilot ramming you into asteroids causing you to blow up(to a point where egosoft had to disable crash damage) and again after a few years later the game is in a much better state than launch with most of the bugs fixed.

All I can say is don't buy at launch for their new games unless you accept it's gonna be a pile of mess for a few years, where they will slowly fix it up.

8

u/Silyus Apr 20 '22 Silver

Not necessarily the game per se, it's just not X. Aggressively so.

After so many hours spent on X3:AP, Rebirth was one of the few games that I actually ended up preordering (yeah I know..).

During the devblog posts a lot of info on the game were left purposely vague, and the ones that made me (lot of us) raise an eyebrow more than once (e.g. piloting/owning one ship at time) were framed as the next best thing since sliced bread for the X playstyle.

On release, the game was a steaming pile of shit. Bugs everywhere, pointless and half assed features and, crucially, nothing that made X our game that we knew and loved.

The shitstorm that ensued on the forums (and every channel really) was a sight to behold.

The drama peaked when people started to piece together clues that pointed toward the possibility that Rebirth was mostly a rushed consoles exclusive that at some point was pivoted to a PC only release. You can still find those posts around.

You have to understand that this was like ~10 years ago, and at that time console and PC were a world apart. X was one of the games that defined the PC experience for the better and worse, much like Civilization etc.. Having even the credible suspect that the devs pivoted a console spin-off (which was fine, per se) as a PC release of the X franchise, marketing it as a natural sequel for AP, was the last straw.

We may never know the truth, but the dry facts are that the game was over-hyped, under-delivered and had a shady backstory. If you have skipped the initial release and all the drama, it might be a decent game to try out now.

As for me: 10 years later I casually open a HB link, see X Rebirth flashed in front of me and that alone might turn me off on checking on what X4 has to offer. Take that as you will.

u/notebad Apr 20 '22 edited Apr 21 '22

I have X Rebirth from the Fanatical Stand With Ukraine bundle (and several other from the X series from somewhere in the past). Never played any of these. I read this negative history on Rebirth and figured I might as well actually install it and try it out before others in the series as a starting point since I have no expectations. Got as far as the main menu - the text is so small that it's basically unreadable. With nothing obvious in the settings to adjust, I Googled it. Yup, apparently nothing can be done other than lower the resolution. Off to a great start. Also for the VR it looks like you'd have to basically buy the game again, it's a separate version.

Subtitles are too fast / ahead of the voices. It's supposed to have controller support but the very first dialog prompt I can't figure out what to do to respond "OK" to the NPC. There is an icon on screen registering that I am in fact pressing the A button. Something responding to touching D-PAD left and right... Holding down the A button isn't it... wtf It only responded to pressing 1 on the keyboard. NPC is extremely generic looking like from a Unity asset grab almost.

EDIT: You press the A button, press the stick in a direction and then release the A button.

u/Silyus Apr 21 '22

EDIT: You press the A button, press the stick in a direction and then release the A button.

it's even in worse shape than I remembered lol

3

u/nermid Apr 20 '22

Ooof. Why even call it X if you can only own one ship?

I'm only 30 hours into X4, and it seems like a natural follow-up to AP gameplay-wise. There are some pain points (hired pilots are taking forever to train up for autonomous trading) and some weirdness (some goods are stored on your person now, so I guess I'm just carrying around 40 tons of majaglit?), but I've got a small mining fleet and I've found a few border sectors to scavenge shit after Xenon incursions, so everything's running relatively smoothly.

So far, it feels like a real X game.

11

u/akio3 Apr 20 '22

It's a series of space simulation games, where you travel around mining, trading, fighting, building fleets, completing missions, etc. There are storylines to follow, but you can also just fly around doing your own thing. The games pride themselves on having a dynamic world that responds to your actions (particularly on the economic side). I think the Rebel Galaxy games are similar; something like Elite Dangerous or EVE Online has the same basic idea, but in a massively multiplayer form rather than a single-player one.

This is my understanding from reading about the X games; I haven't gotten around to playing them yet.

9

u/nermid Apr 20 '22

That's pretty accurate. You can also use your fleets to do the trading, mining, fighting, etc and you can build your own stations out in space.

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '22 edited Apr 20 '22

3

u/nermid Apr 20 '22

It's a single-player game series.

2

u/Sonosaki Apr 20 '22

Space sim game. Sort of like Elite Dangerous

11

u/whiteyt Apr 20 '22

X3 is the best of 'em. Also, there is a very similar game, Avorion, that I think is even better AND is multiplayer (and you can design your own ships).

14

u/lVIEMORIES Apr 20 '22

Not really comparable. Avorion is more about ship building and exploration, and IMO has more similarities to something like captain forever than the X series which focuses on the economic simulation.

6

u/GustoB Apr 20 '22

You just sold me on Avorion :-D

9

u/rokerroker45 Apr 20 '22

I've heard a lot of positive things about X4 now with the bug fixes and DLC though. I'm in for x4 at least.

3

u/cheesegoat Apr 22 '22

X3 also has this excellent review from X-Play. Blowing Kha'ak away has never been so satisfying.

5

u/Holderist Apr 20 '22

+1 for Avorion, had tons of fun playing that game with friends.

Also some amazing designs in the Stream Workshop .

9

u/Sonosaki Apr 20 '22

....wow, i just bought X4 from GMG last week. Guess im going to take the L on this one.

3

u/MysterD77 Apr 20 '22

Ouch. How much was X4?

And did you buy the DLC's too?

7

u/Sonosaki Apr 20 '22

X4 on GMG was $16 if you had a gold membership with them. I bought the collector's edition that came with two of the expansion for $36

6

u/hrabbitz Apr 25 '22

The sliders on the full bundle are super sketchy: the default donation is $3.75 to your charity, $15.00 to Egosoft, and $6.25 to Humble. The "extra to charity" option is still $3.75 to your charity, but only $14.37 to Egosoft and $6.87 to Humble.

Apparently Humble takes the extra that was meant for charity. Sneaky and not cool. Adjust those sliders!

2

u/hrabbitz Apr 27 '22

Why would this get downvoted?

9

u/Damizan Apr 20 '22

$20 again...

1

u/timmyboyoyo Apr 20 '22

You got $20 in your pocket?

1

u/radix4801 Apr 20 '22 edited Apr 20 '22

FWIW, I had previously bought X: Beyond the Frontier and X: Tension, and had to refund them both. I just couldn't get either working on modern hardware/Windows. Later games seem to be better, but the first two are broken. Other reviews mention the same thing.

Maybe somebody else will have better luck, just don't expect a seamless install right out of the box.

Outdated. Nice to see they're now playable.

8

u/bobquik77 Apr 20 '22

It looks like there was an update for both games back in November to make them work on Windows 10 and 11.
