Megathread What's the deal with Roe V Wade being overturned?

This morning, in Dobbs vs. Jackson Womens' Health Organization, the Supreme Court struck down its landmark precedent Roe vs. Wade and its companion case Planned Parenthood vs. Casey, both of which were cases that enshrined a woman's right to abortion in the United States. The decision related to Mississippi's abortion law, which banned abortions after 15 weeks in direct violation of Roe. The 6 conservative justices on the Supreme Court agreed to overturn Roe.

The split afterwards will likely be analyzed over the course of the coming weeks. 3 concurrences by the 6 justices were also written. Justice Thomas believed that the decision in Dobbs should be applied in other contexts related to the Court's "substantive due process" jurisprudence, which is the basis for constitutional rights related to guaranteeing the right to interracial marriage, gay marriage, and access to contraceptives. Justice Kavanaugh reiterated that his belief was that other substantive due process decisions are not impacted by the decision, which had been referenced in the majority opinion, and also indicated his opposition to the idea of the Court outlawing abortion or upholding laws punishing women who would travel interstate for abortion services. Chief Justice Roberts indicated that he would have overturned Roe only insofar as to allow the 15 week ban in the present case.

The consequences of this decision will likely be litigated in the coming months and years, but the immediate effect is that abortion will be banned or severely restricted in over 20 states, some of which have "trigger laws" which would immediately ban abortion if Roe were overturned, and some (such as Michigan and Wisconsin) which had abortion bans that were never legislatively revoked after Roe was decided. It is also unclear what impact this will have on the upcoming midterm elections, though Republicans in the weeks since the leak of the text of this decision appear increasingly confident that it will not impact their ability to win elections.

Answered What's up with the "we will adopt your baby" couple?

I've been kind of following the abortion debacle in the US, so I've got that context, and I saw the original picture of the couple holding up the sign with "please don't get an abortion, we will adopt your baby" on it.

But now I'm seeing "we will adopt your baby" captioned onto all sorts of weird things, like Count Olaf or Jedi ghosts: https://twitter.com/MarienneMaid/status/1541553398058692609?t=pcZjc_EHii1VkFcDRJ498Q&s=19

What's up with that? Why do people think this couple is evil? I might not agree with their political stance but they seem nice, if a bit naive and missing the point. Why have they become such a big deal?

Edit: Answers made it clear that there were actually lots of couples with 'we will adopt your baby' signs, so the 'original couple' I referred to was probably not the original.

Answered What’s the deal with SCOTUS personal information being leaked?

I saw a few tiktok videos referencing this but I can’t find any real sources. Did this happen? How? Which judges? Is there something incriminating?

ETA: re: the “incriminating” question, I heard that credit card info and IP addresses were part of this leak. I was wondering if there was something incriminating on like, a credit card statement or something.

Why would it want to lower the wages of workers? Is this how inflation is fixed every time there’s inflation? Can someone explain more? Thanks!

Unanswered Why have people been talking about mewing on social media recently?

Why has mewing become popular recently?

It’s become popular on TikTok recently but I’m not sure how it works. Apparently, it involves placing your tongue on the roof of your mouth throughout the day, which supposedly leads to a ton of health and aesthetic benefits. However, almost every reputable source online suggests there’s a lack of evidence:

Interestingly though, proper tongue posture is encouraged by a number of reputable sources. Your tongue is supposed to rest on the roof of your mouth:

Answered What’s going on with the Ghislaine Maxwell case?

So I usually try to stay updated on the news for my job, both domestic and overseas. I’ve seen a good bit about Ghislaine Maxwell’s case, and today she got 20 years. Where I’m confused is, wasn’t there some point where she said she had names of Epstein’s contacts who were also involved in the sexual trafficking / rape and exploitation of minors? Like high profile people? Why was that list never released, or why haven’t those names come out? Did she never claim to have any names and I’m remembering wrong, or did I miss something? Answered What’s up with the moderators banning comments on the “spoon trick”?

I saw this thread about a woman who is 17 and being forced by her family to travel back to Yemen to get married. The moderators pinned a comment telling people to stop suggesting the spoon trick or they’ll get banned. If I’m understanding what it is, the spoon trick is supposedly where you hide a spoon in the private area to trigger the metal detectors at the airport, so security can be made aware of the situation and the victim can share details of their incarceration. This seems like a reasonable suggestion to share with potential victims of human trafficking and forced marriage. My question is why would moderators want to ban users for suggesting this option to potential victims? Aren’t the moderators enabling human trafficking and forced marriage by not sharing this life saving tip?

Answered What’s the deal with people calling SCOTUS illegitimate?

There are several people calling SCOTUS overturning Roe “illegitimate”: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/aoc-roe-supreme-court-mobilize-protest-b2108828.html?amp

I don’t agree with overturning Roe either, but what is the basis for “Illegitimacy” versus the court just making a “bad decision”?

Answered What's going on with Kennedy vs Bremerton Schools?

I work in public education. The Supreme Court just made a ruling on this case, and everyone is all up in arms about it for various reasons. From what I can tell, it looks like the case that went to the Supreme Court mostly had to do with a football coach praying on the field with students after games, and whether or not that counts as endorsement.

However, I'm seeing a lot of posts now (you'll see them all over /r/all) saying teachers of various religions should start praying in class, or that the "real" issue is that the coach didn't put in players who didn't pray (or something).

However, neither of these types of posts seem factual, based on the little article reading and skimming of the first few pages of the decision I've done.

What's actually going on here? What was the SC's ruling, and what exactly was that ruling on? Are there other parts of the case (like playing praying players) that aren't part of this decision?

Answered What’s up with everyone focusing blame on Justice Clarence Thomas regarding Roe v. Wade decision?

In the recent event of Roe v. Wade being overturned it seems like every post I have seen on the front page is focusing blame on Thomas as if the whole thing falls squarely on him. I have seen his face more times this week then ever. Read about most of his opinions, his long steaks of not speaking or providing comment from the bench, his wife, his thoughts to his clerks in the 90s etc, even seen pieces that bring to question his value to his race and his place as an “Uncl Tom”. These have all been massive upvoted posts. However, I have not seen any pictures, stories, hit pieces or other on the other Justices. I would need to Google Alito to see what he looks like or anything about him, I don’t honestly know the other Justices names associated with the reversal or dissent. I’ve see some small stir around impeaching the newly minted Justices around perjury under oath regarding their comments when asked during confirmation hearing about Roe v. Wade, but that’s it.

Why is Justice Thomas being used as the focal point for hatred and blame when it seems like he was only a cog in the machine, equally to blame as 5 other Justices?

Unanswered What's the deal with Depp v Heard post-trial?

I, like many others, watched the trial as it aired in bits and pieces and then once Depp won, I stopped consuming any content regarding it.

But then I saw this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/entertainment/comments/vlw37f/-/idxsyfe as well as some others here and there over the last few weeks.

Some people seem convinced that Depp was a liar and an abuser and a wife beater. That the jury was "not sequestered" (don't really know what that means) and that basically the whole thing is corrupt. That the alt-right is involved, mass bot PR spins, the whole lot.

I just assumed that Depp won and that Heard was guilty of defamation, thus lying about him being abusive. But the end of that thread has a very declarative "Depp is a wifebeater" comment.

Is there a consensus here? I figured the consensus was Depp won and Heard lost in a fair court of law. But apparently not?
