Psychonauts 2 for me but judging by the amount of votes it's gotten not many people seem to agree :(

Not enough people played Psychonauts 2, it’s an absolutely fantastic game

Honestly, this vote just proves why it is a good idea to not have the game awards be 100% public vote. Games that were more mainstream and thus played by more people would just always have a giant advantage.

I'm not saying that RE8 couldn't be the best game of the year, though.

A lot of people get turned off from psychonauts due to its art style

13

u/PlantainTop Dec 04 '21

Yeah, the highly stylized character designs are kind of a YMMV thing. It's one of my favorite things about that game (and the original Psychonauts) though.

This hasn’t been an amazing year for games really. There’s good things out there but it’s not been a knockout.

Returnal should be on this list though, and Forza.

26

u/TJFG2000 Dec 02 '21

I though Resident Evil was great. They took the characters and first person perspective from 7 and made a way better game with it.

7

u/Jamie_W Dec 02 '21

I’m sure it was, haven’t played it yet, it’s on my list, but it doesn’t make up for the year being a bit thin as a whole.

I really like most of these games but really don't think any of them are GOTY worthy

It’s like a recreational sports league, even if every team is mediocre, you gotta have a champion

20

u/sennbat Dec 01 '21

There were at least a few great games released this year though. Just not ones anyone at TGA would ever be willing to play.

17

Hitman 3 is GOTY regardless of what any media says.

It takes two had great gameplay but the story was so cheesy and poorly done.

42

u/gundum584 Dec 03 '21

I believe the mechanics in it takes two are better than any game I've played in the last 5 years. every 20 -30 minutes the game throws a completely new and fully fleshed out feature.

Super refreshing compared to most games that just make small changes to existing mechanics as you play through.

11

u/Im_Chad_AMA Dec 04 '21

Yea it reminded me of mario odyssey in that sense, there's this constant sense of adventure and discovery. And the vast majority of the mechanics were well thought out and fun to play too.

The story is indeed a little grating at times, my co-op partner was kinda sceptical because of this at the beginning (especially that stupid book), but we both ended up really loving the game. Its a near-perfect co-op experience.

8

u/mikeyhavik Dec 01 '21

Didn’t play a lot of them. Played most of deathloop and it was good, wouldn’t call it GOTY good…. It takes two was good but my wife got bored pretty quick so that was that… Dread seems good so far but isn’t sucking me in, I’ve played more engaging non-metroid metroidvanias recently on the switch…

Would love to get into Village, and I have psychonauts queued up on gamepass, but overall sorta feels like this is one of those years like when Control won GOTY in 2019 - pretty awesome game, but sorta only won because something had to win

5

u/sennbat Dec 01 '21

Cant believe these games made the list and Cruelty Squad didn't. These nominators clearly don't have a CEO mindset.

Shit, I'm pretty sure the new Outer Wilds expansion beats out any of these. And my brother has been trying to convince me to try Inscryption saying its the best game thats come out in years.

Meanwhile everything ive heard and seen of the games in the above list seem to indicate they are merely okay.

I love Forza but GOTY is almost exclusively reserved for games with great narratives or groundbreaking mechanics. A racing game will never deliver either of those.

29

u/Frankfurt13 Dec 01 '21

You could say Racing games don't rev their engines.

8

u/Wolfnorth Dec 03 '21

A racing game can't deliver ground breaking mechanics? What is that exactly?.

10

u/lamboman1342 Dec 03 '21

It's how a game engages with the player. Rachet and Clank has its praise because of how it takes advantage of the PS5s new power to let players hop between different game worlds in an instant. It's something that is technically very impressive. Maybe not "groundbreaking", that might be a stretch for an adjective.

Another example is Outer Wilds winning GOTY in 2019. That game leaves discovery up to the player and doesnt give instructions on how to play the game, crafting an interesting narrative along the way.

I love racing games and play them more than anything else but the only racing game to win GOTY was Gran Turismo 3. That won arguably because of how it helped merge the bridge between sim and arcade racers into the sim-cade experience that is popular in GT and Forza today. Racing games just arent going to do much new anymore, all they can push for is impressive graphics because the gameplay loop of racing games cant change much more.

9

4

u/phantomsplice Dec 06 '21

Exactly this. I absolutely loved the combat, probably my favorite in any jrpg I’ve played but the story and characters are so cliche, just feels like generic anime stuff

3

u/TheSeagullAstronaut Dec 10 '21

Honestly bro I love the tales of games but it really started to drag big time towards the end. I stopped caring at some point.

I thought the first fire boss was amazing with specific mechanics then they went back to very basic fights after and the story just made me not care anymore. Great game. 7/10 from me but not GOTY worthy IMO

Not a bad game but not a good game either, once you figure out how to do the loop….. games over.

And the ending just isn’t satisfying for something that encourages multiple loops. It really felt like sequel bait the game.

Horizon 5 is my game of the year. It really sucks it didn't get considered. If it's up for next year it prob won't win because of games like God of War Ragnarok. It came out early enough. Not like game of the year is all that important but the Forza horizon franchise really doesn't get the world wide respect it deserves. It deserves more recognition.

6

u/ShadoHazard Dec 04 '21

This thread is so depressing because everyone saying the list sucks. If you played psychonauts 2 you would agree it’s easily the game of the year.

Best game this year, the world was one of the most unique I’ve ever played. The mechanics were so fun you could just mess around on the environment and be having a blast. And the story was fun, imaginative, and an absolute pleasure.

Please pick it up. Only thing it leaves you wanting is more. Best game of the year by a LONG shot.

5

u/sjce Dec 07 '21

How is it the most unique? All of its mechanical elements are things found in other action platformers. It’s aesthetics are great but mechanically it’s not doing anything interesting.

2

u/TorrBorr Dec 09 '21

That's how I felt about Psychounauts 2. Great visuals and art design. A lot of the level designs are deeply creative and interesting on a thematic basis. The rest of the game I felt lacking. It was ok, but I couldn't get through it for some reason.

15

u/MossCovered_Gradunza Dec 02 '21 edited Dec 02 '21

As a RE diehard for 20+ years, I don’t really get why Resident Evil is up there. It’s a fun, enjoyable game. But the story goes a bit off the rails and the game doesn’t have the overall cohesion that some of the better RE games have. It’s a fun game, but I’d never say it was worthy of GOTY.

In fact as an RE fan, it doesn’t rank all that high for me. 1, 2, 7, 4, 8, 3, 5, 6.

But, maybe my opinion is because Village plays more like 4, which is the most mainstream non-horror/survivor RE game (and the one with the most accolades). Anyone who is a big fan of the series tends to like the horror/survival-based games more vs. the action-style RE games.

9

u/turkicnationalist Dec 03 '21

8 doesn't play like 4. Very superficial similarities. There is a village and a castle and you buy things. 5 plays much more like 4.

→ More replies

3

u/Vidimivici Dec 06 '21

RE7 definitely goes off the rails, too.

2

u/MossCovered_Gradunza Dec 06 '21

Didn’t intend to convey that it didn’t, but at least to me the story was still more cohesive and engaging than 8 as that game progressed.

22

u/icetiberon Dec 01 '21

Meanwhile the presumptive favorite to win (Deathloop) is in last place currently. Shows how different the consensus of the “experts” are from the fans.

12

u/TJFG2000 Dec 02 '21

To be fair I think that has more to do with it being a PS5 exclusive than anything. A majority of fans can't choose it if a majority can't even play it.

4

u/Not-Clark-Kent Dec 03 '21

It's on PC. Much easier to have a PC good enough for Deathloop than finding a Series X

Deathloop deserves it but It Takes Two introduced my partner to video games so had to vote for it.

16

u/choicesintime Dec 01 '21

Deathloop does not deserve it. I saw a review of it yesterday and it put into words what I quite couldn't describe. I couldn't find it to copy paste it, but it was something like this:

Deathloop markets itself as a time loop game, but that implies something that it fails to deliver. A time loop game should have scheduled events and a flowing time. Deathloop has 4 stages that are static in time, but you can enter each stage in 4 different times (morning/noon/afternoon/night). Further, you'd expect the stages to change at the different times, but...

However, the main downside of deathloop is that it is a huge letdown in level design for Arkane. Levels don't change meaningfully in different times, and in some senses change too much. Each level has this structure: an entry area with nothing interesting to do in it, which doesn't change barely at all between different times. And one or two "mission" area, where one of your marks/victims/visionaries is. The issue is that those areas only exist in specific times, and the victims you have to kill just cease to exist other than in specific level/time combinations:

Frank and his mansion only exist at night in Stage D. His mansion is inaccessible and blocked off any other time.

Wenji's lab only exists at noon in Stage B.

Charlie's base only is accessible in Stage D at noon.

Harriet and her bunker are only available in stage A in the morning.

A time loop game is by nature going to be repetitive, so it needs to somehow vary it up. Deathloop fails at this by having the marks disappear, and huge sections of the map only exist in one configuration. There isn't any variation: there is one correct way of killing the marks, and everything else is pointless. There is very little reason to visit the stages other than in the above configurations because you won't find marks or interesting areas. So the game ends up being super repetitive. Also, the design of each specific area leaves a lot to be desired from the creators of the Clockwork mansion in Dishonored 2 (and other examples, this post just got too long).

All in all, Deathloop's marketing was very misleading. The variety of ways to play and how the levels change are just an illusion that gets broken pretty quickly.

The only redeeming piece of the game is the invasions. However, those are limited to the stage + time combos listed above, so you end up once again just playing the same 4 levels over and over.

3

u/icetiberon Dec 03 '21

I’m curious to hear why you think Deathloop deserves it. I know we got the detailed take in your response on why it doesn’t :) but would love to hear why from a fan of the game. Everyone i know who has played it thought it was a “meh” game at best.

People voting for Resident Evil:

Why?

No joke, like what was so good about the game? I haven't played it and I want to know why I should. None of the reviews I've seen make the game seem so special.

10

u/Greendogg Dec 02 '21

They took all the last resident evil games, and combined all the best parts into one game.

The level design and general atmosphere is awesome.

Combat is great. Ammo is just plentiful enough to let you fight, but you need to use good aim and judgement otherwise you will run out. Theres also a variety of enemies and bosses, including optional bosses that were really tun.

Theres a mix of horror elements that all work well. In particular theres one level thats just designed to induce tons of scares.

The best part though are the memorable characters. Ethan Winters and Lady D are iconic.

Did you like 7? If so you'll love 8, probably.

Some people say they didn't click with all the characters, but to me, with the exception of maybe Eveline and the dad, every character in 8 felt more creative and thought out in my opinion.

I will say 7 was scarier and felt more like you were trapped in a horror movie, where as 8 is more about ambiance and there's quite a bit more combat. But it's still way more 7 than 4.

it's a great game I'll give them that but....it's just missed opportunity to be a fantastic re game.

no item boxes, almost zero fear factor after castle, riddiculus enemies in the last part of the game, weird bosses with psychic powers .

The game should be only around castle and it's female Queen.

Stealth is definitely harder in DL than Dishonored games unless you’re using the invis. It’s a good game once you get into it, but playing it really just made me want another Dishonored. Arkane pls.

u/JonnySeasons Nov 30 '21

Its crazy i played both dishonored (loved both of them and totally agree with you) but i feel like deathloop is way clunkier but i do like a lot of the mechanics in it… i just feel like 1 mistake in a mission sometimes and the whole thing is fucked which is me just wasting my time

3

u/FerretTheToxic Nov 30 '21

What makes it feel clunky is the inclusion of the pvp mechanic kinda makes quicksaves impossible, which throws a wrench into a system that’s been there in all the other games. I know exactly what you mean though. It’s especially apparent any time Juliana appears. The moment she sees you it’s literally like every enemy knows where you are.

I feel like they really wanted to make the game less stealth oriented, but didn’t do much to actually carry the game in a direction like that.

2

u/blacklite911 Dec 01 '21

How is its stealth compared to Deus Ex?

3

u/FerretTheToxic Dec 01 '21 edited Dec 01 '21

I’ve never played Deus Ex, but with DL, they had to balance how powerful the player could be around the potential pvp interactions. Whereas in Dishonored you get a whole wheel of abilities to choose from that aid in stealth, DL you can only have two powers equipped. Since your blink is kinda necessary for mobility and escapes, you more or less get one other ability. If you want stealth, your options for the second ability are basically invisibility which drains when active (but has an augmentation stopping the drain if you don’t move) or Nexus, which is effectively the same as Domino from Dishonored 2 to link enemies so they share the same fate.

As the above poster said, one enemy seeing you seems to aggro a LOT of other enemies. What’s worse is the possibility of being invaded by another player (or an NPC if offline) and she seems to appear anywhere randomly. If she sees you (she usually does) every NPC near b-lines for you. You also don’t really have on demand healing items like potions, you can just resurrect a set amount of times. If you use those up, the loop resets and you restart from the morning (kinda like a game over).

Because of all this, and the lack of quicksave to just undo messing up your stealth, stealth is quite limited. It still seems like the best option considering how many enemies there are and how much damage they can deal, but it’s just super easy for things to go south and snowball into a massive firefight.

It's not that it is harder, it's that the AI is bad and can find you in situations where they shouldn't.

2

u/FerretTheToxic Dec 01 '21

I didn’t experience that feeling much with the basic AI, but Juliana definitely felt that way.

3

u/choicesintime Dec 01 '21

I think I only had an AI Julianna once, and.. yeah. The announcement she was coming for me came up, then a minute later the announcement she died. Never saw her, I assume she fell somewhere

3

u/choicesintime Dec 01 '21

You aren't doing anything wrong, the AI is just iffy.

This is a sad list, to be honest. None of these games are bad by any means, and I love several of them, but I’ve played so many better games this year. I wish The Game Awards would take publishers like Devolver Digital into mind.

3

u/choicesintime Dec 01 '21

Devolver Digital

What have they released that you'd nominate? I'm super excited for weird west, but I don't recall anything from them in 2020-2021

4

u/PubliclyIndecent Dec 01 '21

Just this year they released Inscryption (which is probably my GotY) and Loop Hero. And 2020 is when they released Fall Guys and Carrion.

They released less than I remember, but that’s because these years have been a blur to me lol. I was mostly using them as an example of a smaller publisher that doesn’t get the attention they deserve.

3

u/choicesintime Dec 01 '21

For sure, they are one of my favorites. I haven’t checked out inscryption, I’ll take a look.

3

u/PubliclyIndecent Dec 01 '21

Don’t do any research on it. This game has so many twists, turns and absurd story points that almost everything you look at will spoil some aspect of the game. Just know it’s a story-driven deck builder. That’s all I knew.

2

u/choicesintime Dec 01 '21

Thanks for the advice, kinda like Outer Wilds then. Better to go in blind

2

u/PubliclyIndecent Dec 01 '21

Exactly, though I still haven’t played Outer Wilds. I do own it, though. You’d recommend playing it? I’ve heard some people say some good things about it.

2

u/choicesintime Dec 01 '21

My favorite game ever. The end

Idk if it’s the best one, and I know it’s not for everyone, but if I didn’t know any better I’d say they made it specifically for me.

Super mario bros 2 for the super nintendo entertainment system

u/DragonsEatGold Dec 03 '21

For the 14th year in a row!

9

u/KaanTheReaper256 Nov 30 '21

None of them interests me to be honest except for Metroid but it’s long to be the BEST game of the year. I don’t say that the games are bad but they just don’t interest me.

13

u/Zsr1081 Dec 01 '21

You should give Psychonauts 2 a try, it’s very good, and it’s on gamepass

u/SnipeHardt Dec 01 '21

Yeah, none of these. The games coming out nowadays just seem so idk what I’m trying to say here, but I can’t be the only one. Everything feels recycled. We need more from the industry. Do better.

12

u/PenguinPirate4 Dec 01 '21

How on earth does It Takes Two or Psychonauts 2 feel recycled? They are some of the most unique and passionate feeling games I've played in my life

I feel like Tales of Arise is the one that really deserves it, and it wasn't nominated due to the outlets' anti-JRPG bias.

4

u/choicesintime Dec 01 '21

It's not a bias, it's just a niche. I love jrpgs, but you really have to be into a specific thing to like them.

2

u/DragonsEatGold Dec 03 '21

This. Even within JRPG circles Tales of games are getting more and more niche. The quality from game to game has gotten pretty inconsistent. It's turning into another Star Ocean.

If Only Outer Wilds DLC was a standalone..

2

It takes two was a really fun game. Me and my girlfriend (who doesn’t play games on her own at all) had a great time with it. Very fun and cute game

2

u/Zestyclose_Lion7438 Dec 04 '21

I vote Nier Replicant

2

u/Gavin-friend Dec 05 '21

Im looking for gavin

2

u/phantomsplice Dec 06 '21

It Takes Two and Psychonauts by far. I’m working through both of them right now and both are amazing.

Deathloop is awesome but not goty worthy IMO

2

u/MattyBro1 Switch Dec 07 '21

Even though it most likely won't happen, Metroid Dread is my pick. If Nintendo sees that Metroid won game of the year, they might actually make Metroid games.

2

u/ADRIANNANE Dec 07 '21

Returnal?

2

u/EderIsAGod Dec 07 '21

This has to be the weakest game of the year candidates I’ve seen in a long time. Probably the weakest since Dragon Age Inquisition was somehow winning a bunch of game of the year awards because nothing else good came out

2

u/Aya409 Dec 07 '21

Returnal pisses all over every single one of them

2

u/Animorphimagi Dec 07 '21

Wow...these are the choices...this is BAD. Where's No More Heroes 3, Lost Judgement, Inscription, Returnal, or Yakuza Like a Dragon?

Especially odd since Returnal has so many other nominations for other awards

2

u/xboxvalhalla21 Dec 07 '21

I just started playing Village...my god these lycons are scary. Especially at night with the sound up. Jesus.

I haven't played a resident evil game since re5 (2006/7?) and I loved that. Surprised to see resident evil as a potential GOTY favorite. I'm looking for a new game to play a few hours a week so my questions are...

Do I need to be up to date with the R.E story line to understand the game?

Can i play couch coop or multi-player?

Thanks

2

u/BallisticSheep Dec 08 '21

You could play RE7, it introduces some of the characters of RE8. I think it will be easier to understand what’s going on if you’ve played RE7 but I don’t think it’s necessary to enjoy RE8.

Both RE7 and 8 don’t have any multiplayer.

2

u/DevastaTheSeeker Dec 08 '21

I found out that apparently the official judges of the awards aren't required to play all the games that are nominated. Honestly I think they should be because it's just unfair for the other games and it would skew the votes in one direction. It takes two especially would only be voted on by the people who were able to play it at all since it's a 2 player required game.

2

u/Avi972003 Dec 08 '21

I'll Vote Guardians Of The Galaxy:)

2

u/theoriginal0 Dec 09 '21

Guardians of the Galaxy should be up there

2

u/Ocelott33 Dec 09 '21

I am going to have to go with Psychonauts 2. My runner up would be Metroid Dread.

2

u/BluebellNell Dec 09 '21
