My boy is playing Halo, on a laptop, with a ps4 controller, if this isn’t the future.

Gateway, I honestly didn’t even think that brand existed anymore

44

u/fizzer13 Dec 08 '21

Lol he’s an older guy, said he needed something to play Diablo 2 at work 😂

1

u/SgtXD357 Dec 08 '21

Should get him a gaming mouse for Christmas, so much easier/faster than analogs

Just an idea 🤷‍♂️

27

u/NBKFactor Dec 08 '21

You have an advantage in Halo by using a controller believe it or not.

I play Halo on PC, with a controller. It’s just the move. It’s also the only PC game I use one on.

2

u/CreaminFreeman Dec 08 '21

Man, I think the last time I played a shooting game with a controller was Halo 3...

I wonder if my thumbs are still even capable of such things!

3

u/deityofchaos Dec 08 '21

I keep hearing this, but as someone who has tried playing on xbox and PC (with and without controller), mouse and keyboard is my preferred input. I get no-scope headshots way easier with the mouse and have no issue placing in the top 2-3 of most matches.

3

u/nef36 Dec 08 '21

Is it because of the aim assist?

2

u/fizzer13 Dec 08 '21

Doesn’t it have something to do with the aim assist ?

1

u/Far-Consideration503 Dec 08 '21

How?

6

u/mikegustafson Dec 08 '21

I’m going to guess the aim assist is turned up pretty high. Each time you aim, it’ll fix in on a target automatically.

2

u/GrimsonMask Dec 08 '21

Except when you jump and when the enemy is not shielded anymore.

1

u/Male_Inkling Dec 08 '21

Halo was designed with controller in mind, assists and everything. The PC versions follow suit

1

u/SgtXD357 Dec 09 '21

Really? I never tried halo on pc. Most shooters seem easier/quicker aim with a mouse for me.

Either way, kid would probably love a gaming mouse if they still need to grab something lol

1

u/Think-Delivery-7805 Dec 09 '21

I would argue this is entirely preference and what you’re used to from the last 20 years, but I would like to hear why you think this.

0

u/kickerofelves86 Dec 08 '21

there's a KBM queue as well

2

u/fizzer13 Dec 08 '21

That’s exactly what I said, but he insists on being as cursed as possible 😂

1

u/SgtXD357 Dec 09 '21

Haha well good for him for being happy with what he’s got 😜 lucky parent lol

2

u/fizzer13 Dec 09 '21

Hahaha parent? By my boy I meant my friend 🤣🤣

1

u/SgtXD357 Dec 09 '21

Lmao here I am thinking you were talking about your son the whole time, whoops haha

1

u/fizzer13 Dec 09 '21

But I son him all the time might as well be his parent 🤣🤣🤣

2

u/LordWeirdDude Dec 09 '21

I tried Keyboard and mouse gaming but my hand cramps on the WASD keys too much. Any tips?

Mouse is clearly superior to analog, though. I agree 1000%

1

u/SgtXD357 Dec 09 '21

Try to keep your hand flat(ish) rather than doing this 🤌 (flipped over obviously lol). That might help. My hand use to cramp on the mouse till I started to try flattening it out, helped me a bunch.

1

u/Volaconic Dec 08 '21

better than my i3 7020u pc

5

u/TheTurningz Dec 08 '21

They do actually exist now. Walmart bought them out.

0

u/Sythe64 Dec 08 '21

I thought they were taken over by asus.

3

u/Cloudeur PC Dec 08 '21

Acquired by Acer. They have a partnership with Walmart but it’s only for rebadged EVOO laptops that they sell under the Gateway name

EDIT: Clarification

1

u/dogey11 PC Dec 08 '21

they got bought out by acer. they make some pretty decent laptops

u/Megansman43 Dec 08 '21

On a bigger note... positive k/d. Boys got a future 🙂🙂🙂🙂

22

u/siderinc Dec 08 '21

Now make every game that releases on multiple platforms cross play and we as gamers have won.

Seperate keyboard vs controller players

-21

u/PsychoDriveBy Dec 08 '21

This never made sense to me. "Crossplay all players!...except for KB+M users on FPS. I don't want to quit using these sick training wheels." Noobsticks serve their purpose, but we're still getting players that choose to use them when KB+M inputs are available for their use on consoles.

-14

u/PsychoDriveBy Dec 08 '21

If you're not one trying to segregate gaming then I don't really care. I just don't understand trying to segregate a recently joined community because a skilled player might have better tech than you. Then when they lose they demand the person with better tech be removed from their matchmaking/lobbies.

4

u/namkash Dec 08 '21

Some of us just want fun. And being killed and killed and killed and killed is not that fun after a while. This is the reason I prefer games that separate competitors and casual games (matchmaking).

Ironically you just described the hardware version of "pay to win", and that is why I don't like playing with kb people. As someone who plays on console, with a vanilla controller, and a fairly good tv, I prefer a more balanced lobby.

-1

u/PsychoDriveBy Dec 08 '21

So, all guns used in a competition should be the same make? All cars the same engine/model? All humans in sports the same weight/height across all sports?

2

u/kdrcow Dec 09 '21

No one is saying everyone has to use the same make and model of keyboard they just don’t wanna show up to a crazy car race driving a pickup. They are allowed to want those to be separated and others can want to have it mixed, to each their own taste.

2

u/PsychoDriveBy Dec 09 '21

Controller and KB+M are the same class. When you separate them into their components you find that joysticks allow for increased precision movement unachievable by WASD. Vibration can help with response as well. When a player refuses to pinch their aiming joystick they rely on muscles in the thumb to do the entire job, but a mouse gets all the muscles in the hand to do the job allowing for increased precision aiming. This is not sports car V truck, it is gaming controller vs gaming KB+M. They are the same class of gaming. While a KB+M could be superior in all aiming genres, they can fall flat in racing, sports, fighting, and a handful of other joystick dominated genres.

1

u/kdrcow Dec 09 '21

And the fact that you can say one is directly better than another in a certain genre of game means people are allowed to want them separate so that the difference in capabilities doesn’t rely as much on what mode of input they prefer.

2

u/PsychoDriveBy Dec 10 '21

I would argue that means matchmaking is faulty. A game should recognize the capabilities of a player in around 10 matches of gameplay. There will be bad KB+M users in low ranked matchmaking, as will there be high ranked Gamepad users. Instead of asking for crossplay, then demanding they segregate inputs, the player could seek to be better. They could take the easy route and blame the victor, or they could double down and focus on putting themselves in more advantageous situations to fight skilled KB+M users.

3

u/Baby_bluega Dec 08 '21

Why not allow hackers then? Simply because they are using software on their computer that makes them better you refuse to play with them? Why are you trying to segregate the community? #stopbanninghackers.

The point is it should be a level playing ground for all, and controllers are just the more fun and enjoyable way to play a video game. They should not have to be punnished by being placed in lobbies where people will have an unfair advantage simply because they chose to use a mouse and keyboard. If the reason your using a mouse and keyboard is because you want an advantage over the controller users, your probably trash at the game anyways.

0

u/PsychoDriveBy Dec 08 '21

Level playing ground for all? So, what do you consider gun competitions, racing, and sports? Are all competitors the exact same height/weight in all sports? The cars and engines all the same in racing? And the guns all the same manufacturer?

2

u/Baby_bluega Dec 09 '21

I didn't realize gaming was about who can design the best computer. I am sorry, My mistake.

And yes, for stuff like wrestling and boxing, we have wieght classes. We also have restrictions on what kind of engine you can bring to any racing events and what kind of guns you can use at shooting competitions.

1

u/PsychoDriveBy Dec 09 '21

Right, and a controller and KB+M can do the same exact thing. They fall into the same class of gaming. Controllers have vibration as a response tool and joysticks have come a long way to outclass the directional movements on a keyboard. Keyboard is preferred when you want more keys, some go with a multiple button mouse. I believe the reason a lot of controller gamers complain about KB+M is they refuse to hold their aiming joystick properly. It may be uncomfortable at first, but pinching the stick with your pointer and thumb will increase your precision. This also allows you to press buttons while you aim. Really, the big reason that the mouse has such an advantage in FPS gaming is that you have all the muscles in your entire hand reacting to just aiming. Not because a mouse is a superior device. Hell, there is a rise of gamepad users on PC, they all have controller joystick with more keys than a controller on one hand and still use the mouse in their other hand.

1

u/Baby_bluega Dec 09 '21 edited Dec 09 '21

Keyboard and mouse gaming is far easier to aim than with a joystick. Not sire if your trying to convince me they are similar... they are not. You know that and I know it. So why are you trying to justify they are equals?

Are you suggesting that controllers make up for their lack of ability to aim with their superior wasd movements? Cause we both know that's total horseshit too.

I play both btw. They both have advantages and disadvantages. The controller is far more comfortable and relaxing to use, mouse and keyboard gives you better aim. I would probably not play a game on my Xbox that required me to play with people on mouse and keyboard, because as a pc gamer myself, I know how hard I would get rocked. I would say the exception is fortnite. While I haven't played it in years, I remember using both was pretty equal, as controller came with the benefit of auto aim that was significant to make it so I could do about equally well with both methods. Haven't seen a game that make the playing field so equal. I used to play sometimes on keyboard, and sometimes on mouse while I was using my pc.

1

u/PsychoDriveBy Dec 10 '21

That's exactly what I'm saying. You don't see KB+M pop up as much in eSports genres like Sports, Fighting and Racing. Not because they're trying to even the playing field, but because it is the preferred input by the ones in the tournaments. You'll see an occasional KB+M on Rocket League eSports, but most learn how much precision you sacrifice playing KB+M over Gamepad. MOBA/RTS and FPS are primarily KB+M because it is the preferred input. If you look at Apex Legends, a FPS game known for fast-paced movements and gunplay, you'll see the rise of Gamepad users winning tournaments and joining eSports.

u/kdrcow Dec 09 '21

You still bring a gun to a shooting range instead of a slingshot.

1

u/PsychoDriveBy Dec 09 '21

Right, what's your point? Are you really claiming a controller is a slingshot compared to a gun?

1

u/kdrcow Dec 09 '21

Even sticking to guns you don’t bring a pistol to a rifle competition they are just different objects. My point is we aren’t talking specific makes and models we are talking about entirely different objects.

38

u/rydamusprime17 Dec 08 '21

Should be a Sony laptop and Nintendo controller 😅

5

u/Joshua_Butler027 Dec 08 '21

I have played h:mcc with a switch controller and a ps4 controller and i like to use the ps4 controller more than switch

1

u/Lubagomes Dec 08 '21

I was playing mario odissey emulated by my friend pc playing through my phone on a xbox controller

4

u/fizzer13 Dec 08 '21

Ooof even more cursed

8

u/vrpornisquitegreat Dec 08 '21

I played Halo 2 on PC with a PS2 controller over a decade ago. Microsoft games and console controllers on PC aren't exactly new, but it is easier and more integrated into games now without the need download controller emulators to make the game think its an xbox controller.

1

u/Daigher Dec 09 '21

Honestly steam's controller imput is so shit you HAVE to download Ds4 windows to make a dualshock/dualsense work

7

u/Doedel51 Dec 08 '21

Watch out that the laptop's fans are not blocked. On the photo it's standing on some sort of blanket or sofa or whatnot and this can block the airflow which will cause overheating. Happy gaming

3

u/fizzer13 Dec 08 '21

Just a pic taken to show off the set up all precautions checked for sure

5

u/VanCityHunter Dec 08 '21

It’s the present.

6

u/lThaizeel Dec 08 '21

You could play Halo on PC with a PS controller in 2006

0

u/fizzer13 Dec 08 '21

Fair 🤓

2

u/quantum_altar Dec 08 '21

how does this work?

5

u/NubbNubb Dec 08 '21

All you got to do is play Halo Collection or 5 through steam which natively supports Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PS4 controllers. Might have to go through controller options but a lot better than trying to use PS4 controllers on PC when they first came out.

3

u/quantum_altar Dec 08 '21

how does the computer receive the controllers signal though?

6

u/Rope_on_a_pope Dec 08 '21

Boob wizards

3

u/NubbNubb Dec 08 '21

If the computer supports Bluetooth then that though can be finicky getting started sometimes, if not you can just plug it in via USB cable.

1

u/ShieldTeam6 Dec 08 '21

Like they said Bluetooth if the pc has, otherwise pretty sure you can buy a USB dongle

1

u/MalevolntCatastrophe Dec 08 '21

It's easier to buy a USB Bluetooth adapter.

1

u/Daigher Dec 09 '21

Or just connect the controller with a usb cable

1

u/ShieldTeam6 Dec 09 '21

That's what I do haha not as sexy but effective.

1

u/ThenosTheGod Dec 08 '21

There's an app called DS4Windows which you can download and after you connect your PS4 Controller to your PC using cable or Bluetooth, it converts the PS4 inputs to Xbox controller inputs which cover most of the PC games. I use controller for GTA and Forza and couldn't imagine playing without it. Especially games like Rocket League where controllers have an advantage makes you like 100x better.

2

u/harerp Dec 08 '21

I saw a guy doing same except with mac

2

u/TheTurningz Dec 08 '21

Gateway? Takes me back to the year 2001

2

u/dointhereddithing Dec 08 '21

Didn't they shut everything down back then too.

2

u/TheTurningz Dec 08 '21

I think itwas like a year or 2 after that

0

u/dointhereddithing Dec 08 '21

So having one in 2021 is highly unlikely

0

u/TheTurningz Dec 08 '21

No walmart bought the brand you can buy them online

1

u/dointhereddithing Dec 08 '21

What.... It's Google time!!!

2

u/MuhBrain Dec 08 '21

Back in the Xbox/GameCube/PS2 days, Yamaha released a handlebar set for motorcycle games. It was for ps2 but it cane with am attachment that let you use that ps2 controller on a GameCube or an Xbox. All my friends wanted to use it because they preferred the playstation controller to The Duke. I can't blame them. I was the only giant of the bunch so I loved The Duke. As someone who grew up playing consoles and now is on PC, I love the controller integration that exists now. Some games just feel better with a controller.

4

u/Kindly_Region Dec 08 '21

I just died inside a little

3

u/Iegionmaniac Dec 08 '21

What controller?

3

u/mazer_rack_em Dec 08 '21

What a disappointing future…

17

u/fizzer13 Dec 08 '21

Being able to play a game with friends no matter your situation, I don’t see what’s not to like imo

-8

u/mazer_rack_em Dec 08 '21

Oh no totally, I just meant it more in a “we went to the moon over half a century ago and this is our lives” sense

2

u/EverythingHurtsDan Dec 08 '21

I still don't get it. How would you have imagined our future in that time? We had more scientific discoveries and technologic advancements in 30 years than the last 200. I'm genuinely curious :)

-10

u/mazer_rack_em Dec 08 '21

We had more scientific discoveries and technologic advancements in 30 years than the last 200.

By what metric?

3

u/EverythingHurtsDan Dec 08 '21

Medical, Chemistry, Psychology, Mathematics, Astronomy. Just the first which came to my mind. Do you disagree?

-9

u/mazer_rack_em Dec 08 '21

That’s not a metric, though yes I’d disagree with probably every one of those

1

u/fizzer13 Dec 08 '21

Damn…now that you put it that way

1

u/OneModernRelic Dec 08 '21

ANNNND we have yet another post of someone playing an Xcloud game with a PS controller. That makes number 10 by my count. Probably missed 30 or 40 however. Excuse me while I post "How do I fix my controller". BRB.

-1

u/Hawks206Dawgs Dec 08 '21

This is just wrong on so many levels.

-2

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '21

thats fucking sad

1

u/IxtlanPaladin Dec 08 '21

On a fucking Gateway. We have peak!

1

u/TehOuchies Dec 08 '21

Your son found the Gateway.

1

u/Titus-Magnificus Dec 08 '21

Because the aim assist in controller is crazy good in Halo.

1

u/Considered_Dissent Dec 08 '21

Awesome, though it's a pity about the brand of laptop. It's been 4hours since the photo was taken so there's about a 75% chance their kid is dead from fire or electrocution. RIP.

1

u/AndroidWall4680 Dec 08 '21

My pc cant even run halo :/

Controllers are sometime superior than a keyboard and mouse

1

What's so special, I've been doing this for at least 6 years now.

1

u/freezedemon- PC Dec 08 '21

I'm doing that from 2015 so ...

1

People have been doing this ever since the ps4 came out..

Ryzen CPU with Radeon integrated graphics and discrete Nvidia GPU, I guess...

1

u/IlikeMirandasAss Dec 08 '21

How about playing Halo on a PC streamed via Steamlink to his Mobile phone played with a Playstation Gamepad via Bluetooth?

1

u/ElCapitanoMaldito Dec 08 '21

Playing Halo is kind of a thing of the past. FIGHT ME !

1

u/soulxhawk Dec 08 '21

I felt the same during the PS2/XB/and GC generation. I was playing Sonic on a Nintendo console, Conker was on Xbox, and Crash was no longer only on Playstation lol.

1

u/vasilissiozos Dec 08 '21

Dude I'm playing God of war 3 on pc with a ps1 controller. I'm like 5 parallel universes ahead of you and it's ancient technology.

1

u/Actual_Baker_7368 Dec 08 '21

I tried playing Infinite multiplayer on a Ryzen 5 Mini PC with an 8bitdo SNES controller just out of curiosity. 30 FPS and low graphics settings, but it works!

1

u/WhtMage209 Dec 08 '21

Wow, those are the worst possible conditions to play a PC game

1

u/MrBadness Dec 08 '21

PC and a controller - the only way for me to play Dark Souls series (no money for a console and no TV in apartment). I don't understand ppl playing DS with KB+M the dodge, block etc. controls so not comfortable. Way faster reactions on controller.

1

u/Gasmaskguy101 Dec 08 '21

Are laptops not supposed to be able to do this?

1

u/cowperandrewes Dec 08 '21

Used to do this with a parallel port, some dodgy wiring and a driver from a random dude. That allowed us to use PS2 controllers on windows back in the early noughties.

1

u/Furyever Dec 08 '21

I play it on a MacBook Air in a browser with a PS5 controller oddly enough

1

u/imsotiredofthisshite Dec 08 '21

Dude, this is gonna blow your mind.. I use a ps4 controller while using Gamepass.

1

Lol that’s what my homie is doing in this pic, made me cringe so hard 😖😂 what is wrong with y’all 🤣

1

We are also known as pioneers.

1

On the other hand, we can get neither of the consoles at their damn prices XD

1

Turn on Bluetooth and hold the PS button and the share button to sync it

I actually do the same thing lol and I use the blue camo lol

0

u/eqleriq Dec 08 '21

it isn't the future, it's the past where this post would have been interesting since people have posted much more elaborate setups like playing on a laptop running macos with a virtual windows machine to stream a console game while playing with a different console's controller emulated on a smartphone.

but ok cool

0

u/dointhereddithing Dec 08 '21

If it was an apple computer that whole setup be legit. alas it's a Gateway, probably screen shot with a PS4 nearby to simulate that he's actually got the power to turn on his laptop

0

no u can use ds4 to connect a ps4 controller to a pc
