MW2 lobbies were something else

They did us dirty by releasing the campaign remastered without the multiplayer 😩😩😩

144

u/EYazz Dec 08 '21

The only reason I can think is that they don’t want people playing the MW2 remastered and therefore not playing the new cod games cuz they know MW2 will be really popular online again

39

u/MichiganMitch108 Dec 08 '21

Yea but at the same time, they’d charge for the mw2 multiplayer and would add loot boxes , etc like cod4 updates multiplayer so still lots of money. I just wonder what the cost analysis was?

41

u/doyouhavesource2 Dec 08 '21

Because they know they can just click the "release mw2 button" when they need to make buttloads of money.

That button will last forever. New cods are not guaranteed but that one will be.

Guys I have to admit something...

I never got a tactical nuke.

I got to 1 kill away a couple times, but never sealed the deal.

12

u/Anti-Scuba_Hedgehog Dec 08 '21

I got it just once with a USP in FFA, it was truly a great day. But never have I got a triple, aka three kills with one bullet. Not in any game.

8

u/ins4yn Dec 08 '21

High rise was THE map for the triple, right off spawn and across the map with an intervention or Barrett

3

u/Scorndornworn Dec 08 '21

Me neither bud. All it does is end the game early, anyway, nothing to be ashamed of

3

u/LiquidSquids Dec 08 '21

Man the nuke felt like the biggest accomplishment in gaming. I think I only ever got 3. One I got with a tac knife on the last game before I had to leave for work. Was so fucking happy all night.

2

u/GermanCommentGamer Dec 09 '21

Same. I once hit 23 kills on Quarry but fell to my death before I hit the 24th. Pain

What's wild is no matter how many slurs and screams and shouts were said, how much griefing occurred, it seems like everyone pretty much stuck in the lobby so you'd end up playing with the same group over multiple maps. Good times

110

u/yes_yta Dec 08 '21

I remember some really good times. Why do so few people use voicechat anymore? I ask this as someone who no longer uses voicechat :)

142

u/bking Dec 08 '21 Silver

Voice chat has become 40% people breathing or coughing into their open mics, 40% screaming family members in the background, 7% racial slurs and 3% communication.

I don’t want to have somebody wheezing into my ear when I’m trying to relax and get racial slurs thrown at me.

22

u/yes_yta Dec 08 '21

What's the final 10% though? Actual communication relevant to the game?

65

u/KilledTheCar Dec 08 '21

Somebody talking to someone else in another language.

15

u/Climbtrees47 Dec 09 '21

And or fans/smoke detector beeping.

4

u/Kierkin Dec 09 '21

I try to tell people to fix their smoke detectors before their houses burn down but it doesn’t ever seem to land.

3

u/PandaTheVenusProject Dec 09 '21

Also this is highly dependent on the game.

Red Orchestra? All tactical coms.

Different crowds.

2

u/LoreOfBore Dec 08 '21

A rounding error.

2

u/Careless_Mushroom470 Dec 09 '21

Gangsta rap music playing in the background

16

3

u/WayneKrane Dec 08 '21

Also the random beeping in the background. How is that not annoying you, change your smoke alarm batteries.

4

u/southpaw85 Dec 09 '21

I miss the old days when the screaming family members and racial slurs numbers were inverted.

3

u/Dudio12 Dec 08 '21

Lol you better up that racial slur percentage. More like 25%

2

u/big_sugi Dec 08 '21

What does voice chat even matter? Every lobby is temporary. There's 0 opportunity to make new friends or play out rivalries all evening. Everyone bitched about squeakers and vitriol, but is was SBMM and shattering quickplay into a thousand pieces that destroyed the COD community.

6

u/piedude3 Dec 09 '21

Novelty. VOIP was not really popular on consoles before 2007. The PS3 version of COD 3 had no voice chat. Xbox made a huge push for VOIP in games, requiring games to ship with it at some point as well as shipping certain consoles with headsets. Then, two massively popular games shipped with VOIP, Halo 3 and COD 4.

If you have friends you want to play with, you'd want a headset to talk to them. If you have a headset that came with your console, why not just try out this cool thing that lets you talk to people in a game for like, the first time ever?

Now it exists, but the novelty isn't there. If you want to talk to friends, you can just get into a private call on console. If it's a casual game, it's easier to play on your TV instead of having a headset.

That said, in games on PC where comms are important, eg, CSGO or Overwatch, you'll find that comms are still used frequently. Low ranks generally won't, which is why they are low ranks. Other reasons being people thinking "I'm so much better than them that nothing they say will help me."

2

u/Wild_Fire2 Dec 09 '21

You can't talk about VOIP without mentioning Socom series my man. Literally laying the ground work that you're giving Halo and CoD4 credit for.

3

u/avexiis Dec 09 '21

Honestly it’s how people talk in it these days, everybody is always trying to prove how much better they are than everyone else. If it’s not that, it’s the cringey warzone fast talk thing. Here’s an example:

“Reloading reloading, check corner check corner, he’s trash he’s trash, he’s one hit dies I hate these fucking hackers, slur

31

u/Dreaming_Scholar Dec 08 '21

to easy to get banned these days for any slight or imaginary offense

34

u/Mr_Goat_1111 Dec 08 '21

Once got some pretty salty messages from some guy on dead by daylight, I replied "eat my farts" and got banned from any kind of communication via Xbox for 24 hours, couldn't even message my friends or join party's.

10

u/Dr_suesel Dec 08 '21

I got a three day mute on Overwatch for saying "yall are kinda butt".

3

u/SoyFurioso Dec 08 '21

I got the ban for drunkenly messaging “ur mom gay”

4

u/BishopFrog Dec 08 '21

Haha your mom had sex with your dad. That's kinda gay bro

3

u/SoyFurioso Dec 08 '21

Lol yeah you kinda nailed the vibe there

4

u/MentalRobot Xbox Dec 08 '21

I've always been good with not saying anything banable via text chat. But someone salty reported my bio and I got a short ban from that and had to change it.

My bio was lyrics to the song Trash by KoRn, it has lots of profanity and is definitely against the code of conduct but I had it for 10 years, 10 YEARS. I was pretty sad someone finally reported it lol.

(This was also from playing dead by daylight on xbox)

3

u/Dreaming_Scholar Dec 08 '21

yep, so why even bother with voice chat

1

u/Gugnir226 Dec 08 '21

Oh no, I can't use racial slurs and other forms of verbal harassment! Gamers are truly oppressed!

13

u/I_Am_Ir0n_Man Dec 08 '21

Get a load of this asshole complaining that he can't use racial slurs or other forms of harassment.

3

u/Ieieunununleie Dec 09 '21

Imagine being offended by a pattern of noises coming from someones mouth. Lmao so soft 😭

3

u/Dreaming_Scholar Dec 08 '21

That's about how it goes to any thing said in modern day voice chat.

→ More replies
→ More replies

1

u/ParadiseValleyFiend Dec 08 '21

Because there became no real point to it. No one used it to strategize, no one really made friends over general chat, it was basically just to be a dick. I'm sure the mute option got used more than the actual voice chat.

13

u/Ketsuno_Hanna Dec 08 '21

And since there were no bullshit punishment, you could just say whatever and not get a ban.

Since games were unranked, you could leave when you want without being punished (unlike now even in unranked).

Good old times where it was wild and special snowflakes couldnt get petty revenge when they get triggered by words.

96

u/SlyyKozlov Dec 08 '21

Yea, I'm glad 10 year olds will actually get banned for throwing out racial slurs. Wouldn't exactly say its a "bullshit punishment" to ban them lmao

Not sure why you would consider that the "good old times".

Those lobbies were a toxic pile of degenerates. I haven't used open mic chat in any multiplayer games probably since and my quality of life has improved greatly.

9

u/PelicanCowboyAnime Dec 08 '21

there are cases where the methods used to correct the actual offenses are lazily slapped together to placate people and can lead to behavior such as abusing a game's report system. (ex: if you're a random on a team with toxic buddies who queued together and they decide to all report you).

It's facetious to say that this is all about banning racial slurs either. You can't even say "gg ez" in Overwatch text chat (which, to their credit, they tried to implement at least in a humorous way).

A lot of it is to please people who get unreasonably upset about an online video game, and there's no amount of moderating that will eliminate that. But obviously I agree *some* is necessary.

92

u/bloodmonarch Dec 08 '21

Well because he is one of those toxic degenerates

Same man, I opened up crab game with some friends and turned on chat. Hearing a kid screaming racial slurs and all the classic MW2 racial slurs as well as insults just made me get hit by a brick of nostalgia. No joke that was the best game night ever. To make things funnier his name was Faze.

6

u/doyouhavesource2 Dec 08 '21

Exactly this 100%

"I miss how I could say toxic slurs without any reprecussions what so ever"

The individual never changed, they are still bigoted as ever. The mediums they get to abuse without repercussions are smaller and smaller

3

u/Jim_Carr_laughing Dec 09 '21

Have you seen some of the other comments here? "Eat my farts" is mild trash talk, not a bannable offense.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '21

There is nothing wrong with expressing those times as the good times. To say that doesn't make one bigoted. People these days are way too overreactionary. It was certainly a fun time to be a gamer back then.

u/PM_ME_UR_DINGO Dec 08 '21

They never said that. Stop projecting.

27

u/Alastor_Aylmur Dec 08 '21

Rose-colored glasses hit different. Those times of toxicity gave rise to intense "unofficial" clan battles so it wasn't all bad either.

13

u/SpamSushi206 Xbox Dec 08 '21

I remember when my clan went against a clan from a different high school and we smacked them. They said it didn't count as a loss to them because our clan name wasn't a part of our gamertags lol.

14

u/Rhyme_like_dime Dec 08 '21

Most MW2 thing I have ever heard.

19

u/SlyyKozlov Dec 08 '21

I agree, I didn't say nothing good came of it, I also had some good times in some open lobbies with reasonable trash talk.

I was more focused on his weird point that "you could say anything you want with no punishment and snowflakes couldn't do anything about it"

Seems like he just longs for calling people racial slurs behind the safety of his headset.

2

u/Jim_Carr_laughing Dec 09 '21

Why do you care, if you're going to have chat muted anyway?

-5

u/Python208 Dec 08 '21

1

u/IrrelevantLeprechaun Dec 09 '21

The only people that miss those "good ol' days" and think getting banned for it is "bullshit" are the racists themselves who used to hang around those old lobbies.

Everyone else is glad people get banned for that now. No one else misses it but the racists.

-13

u/Stuckinstickybuds Dec 08 '21

Some people enjoy it, some people don’t like hearing certain words. Whatever you consider a good quality of life might not be the same for someone else. Good old times are about nostalgia, if you were offended then, most like you’ll still be offended by the same things now. Figure it out or move on, don’t step on other peoples idea of good times.

2

u/rider_0n_the_st0rm Dec 08 '21 edited Dec 08 '21

Ah yes, the "good old times" where man children would shout "N*R! NR! N***R!" over and over for the full three minutes between matches.

You're delusional, man. Online gaming is dramatically improved when those kinds of douchebags are rightly banned. In fact, I'd offer up that in most cases online gaming is best when you can't hear the other team at all.

-7

u/SoManyThrowAwaysEven Dec 08 '21

Except for the part where the solution was to prevent people from speaking to each other. Hardly any game lets you interact with your team anymore let alone the enemy. They took the socializing out of video games and just made it a lifeless experience.

I miss UI you could understand. Five options at a time max, easy to digest columns, clear information, not a floating cursor in sight.

Playing Halo Infinite and trying to navigate is a nightmare compared to "hit multiplayer and then hit play".

57

u/1911Shields Dec 08 '21

COD MW 2019 lobby is an absolute dumpster fire then.

First off you have like 4 different games to choose from, even if you just want to play the one. (Don't worry they will constantly urge you to buy the others too.) Then theres like a million different sub menus and options for all worthless crap that could be reduced by like 80% and still be completely functional.

7

u/Southpaw_Soldier Dec 08 '21

GR breakpoint's UI and menus are insane and annoying to look at.

4

u/ohlookahipster Dec 08 '21

I don’t have that issue navigating multiplayer, but I’m SO FUCKING CONFUSED trying to understand my rank, progression, and what I can/can’t or haven’t unlocked yet and what I can/can’t modify.

Where’s the simple career page that just shows me my rank and how much XP I need.

2

u/Mrfunnyman22 Dec 09 '21

I'm kinda glad I'm not the only one. The UI should always be this easy to navigate. Halo and warzone are so confusing

5

u/darkjungle Dec 08 '21

Playing Halo Infinite and trying to navigate is a nightmare compared to "hit multiplayer and then hit play".

It's only a nightmare because you're looking for stuff that isn't there. There's only 4 options, one being bot and one being ranked.

2

u/willvasco Dec 08 '21

It was just the first game that came to mind, lots of modern AAA games have this problem. Destiny 2 jumps out as well, that game has menu after menu for all sorts of junk, so many you need two different menu buttons to access them.

For a more glaring comparison in Halo, compare Halo Infinite's customization menus with systems from the past, even Reach had a more intuitive system with just as much complexity as Infinite does, if not more so.

3

u/Hourglass420 PC Dec 08 '21

The floating cursor is because most games are designed with PC in mind now.

4

u/willvasco Dec 08 '21

I'd argue that's not entirely the reason. It started with Destiny so far as I can tell and became a stylistic choice that just so happened to make designing technically functional UI way, way easier because they didn't have to care about how you navigated it anymore. You can tell it wasn't for that reason because Destiny 1 never came to PC, it was exclusively a console game.

1

u/Hourglass420 PC Dec 08 '21

Destiny may have been one of the first console games to have a menu like that, but they have been present in PC games since the 90's...

1

u/willvasco Dec 08 '21

Let me clarify: it's annoying in console games. I'm aware PC games use a mouse. There is a trend these days in AAA games to have that floating cursor + parallax effect when you navigate using a controller, and it isn't because it is designed to be used with a mouse instead, at least not always. It's a stylistic/corner-cutting choice. Destiny being designed that way confirms that, because it was designed to be navigated with a controller, not a mouse.

2

u/djurze Dec 08 '21

Destiny being designed that way confirms that, because it was designed to be navigated with a controller, not a mouse.

I'm pretty sure it's that way in Destiny to promote use of the touchpad on the PS4 controller, to show off that tech

That's about the ONLY thing COD has actually done to improve the online experience. I almost never get put back into the same lobby MW2019 and later. It used to make me rage when it would put me back in 3 and 4 times. Like motherfucker, I left on PURPOSE.

u/justkw97 Dec 08 '21

As rough as they were, I wouldn’t change it for the world.

5

u/Comma-Bot-9000 Dec 08 '21

Ah yes the vote to skip button that we lost for no reason whatsoever on like every game these days

9

u/FirstReign Dec 08 '21

The amount of shit talk back then.. damn. Today, the whole lobby would be banned for life.

3

u/Ducks-Dont-Exist Dec 08 '21

Really? I hear, and say, some pretty crazy shit in those lobbies. Pretty sure there's no amount of hatred that can get you banned anymore.

3

u/FirstReign Dec 08 '21

I stopped playing multi-player halfway through Advanced Warfare. So it's been a few years now. I can't imagine that it's gotten any better

2

u/Ducks-Dont-Exist Dec 09 '21

Personal experience is not necessarily objective truth, but my experience is it actually kind of is. COD isn't the hot multiplayer game anymore with kids. There's more older players now who are generally more respectful and fewer squeakers who let "F----T" and "N-----" fly every .33 seconds like the old days. I mean, it's still a COD lobby for sure, but there's a noticeable cooling effect happening over time.

The good old days.

I'd love to see the limps who get triggered by a simple "gg easy" try and go into an old CoD and CS lobby.

u/Doughie28 Dec 08 '21

God we really do just turn into our parents.

17

u/dartsloverseyes Dec 08 '21

Now you have battle cries from Battlefield 2042 "oh yeah, we showed 'em"

18

u/Jhawk163 Dec 08 '21

I remember even if you just go back to BF4, the soldiers will scream shit like "They're fucking me in the ass over here!" and I just can't help but question when we needed our shooter games to be rated fucking G.

Typing ggez in siege is like me favourite thing to do these days and it gets people so Fucking triggered, so many death threats and PMs

5

u/Polymerize Dec 08 '21

Bro league of legends removed "all chat" because people would say gg ez or whatever. When destiny 2 launched there wasn't even in game chat because one of the devs got so butthurt in WoW they just assumed everyone else hated even the slight chance someone might say something that you don't like.

The devs have lost their minds trying to control people's interactions.

I triggered a teammate in HC Search and Destroy in Cold War. Me and a couple of guys cleared out the B objective. The last couple guys on the enemy team are back in the spawn sniping. What does the guy with the bomb try to do? He attempts to pick them off from an awkward ledge he climbed up. I said “Come plant the bomb, we cleared B”. He got upset, “STFU, don’t tell me what to do”. This is a grown ass man, not a teenager. We just teamkilled him, planted the bomb and won the round.

I am content there are less racial slurs in game chat nowadays. It’s still there but not as frequent as COD4 days.

3

u/astral-divinity Dec 08 '21

"Right, I'll tell you what"

3

u/fizzer13 Dec 09 '21

I’m getting racial slur flashbacks, I never got called n***er so much in my life, like how’d they even know I was black 🤣🤣🤣

17

u/sharrrper Dec 08 '21

And if the map wasn't Shipment everyone auto-voted to skip. God I hate Shipment.

At least it wasn't Black Ops where you could vote to replay the previous map forever (until they patched it). Hope you like Nuketown because it's effectively the only map in the game.

17

u/Comma-Bot-9000 Dec 08 '21

This is mw2. No shipment.

u/ciderlout Dec 08 '21

I miss this. Not so much for the toxic abuse which was no doubt off-putting for the faint of heart, but more because I actually met people.

Without post-game lobby chat I would never have met the clan I gamed with for the next 4 years.

Mute buttons exist. I would prefer to have lobbies like they did. Yes arseholes tend to shout loudest and longest, but I dunno, that is life... and better they spend all their energy in a Cod lobby than harassing teachers or whatever it is they get up to these days.

I can hear this picture

2

So many try hard gamer tags in that pic

3

u/xiPLEADthe5th Dec 08 '21

It would all start when someone would say “vote to skip” in a quiet lobby. A couple fuck yous later and it’s a damn warzone.

1

u/Turdsley Dec 08 '21

Mute was my friend.

1

u/duomaxwellscoffee Dec 09 '21

Way too many people that thought racial slurs were the height of comedy.

The legendary riot shield argument

1

u/BrainySmurf9 Dec 08 '21

The Xbox live party chat system, was probably a big reason I was able to enjoy CoD multiplayer. I couldn’t imagine dealing with lobby chats.

I remember a guy calling me gay and saying “Suck my d..” so I told him, “so you’re ok with me doing that then ok!” He left

1

This and BLOPS had some of the best debates ever 🙌

1

u/InfernoDragonKing Dec 08 '21

I’d go back to the Uber toxic chats and roast matches of MW2 Days in a heartbeat. People suck ass at trash talking now. Same 10-15YO tryhards saying get shit on over and over again to the point you gotta mute them when they’re on your team
