tries old school RuneScape

Oh this is fun, but I don't know if I'll play it for long

7000 hrs, 2277 lvls, 3 "breaks" later

I'm not sure if I like it yet

385

u/Lazypole Dec 08 '21

For real, I maxed in OSRS but I probably wouldn’t recommend the game to someone. That game is a fast track to some very unhealthy habits.

130

u/SireNightFire Dec 08 '21

Hah when my girlfriend sees me playing OSRS she always asks why its fun. I don't really know how to answer while I'm sandcrabbing, tele-alching, and watching the bond market at the same time.

I'm still not sure why I find it so fun.

73

u/Lazypole Dec 09 '21

Yeah a LOT of it is extremely boring. My dumb as rocks brain decided “lets do ALL the boring skilling before we play the game”, because raids etc are pretty fun.

Well that in reality is sinking 4000+ hours into a game to get to the fun. Will never understand why I thought that was a good idea.

When I finished they barely brought out any updates and I burned out and stopped playing lol

Dont be like me

31

u/best_dandy Dec 09 '21

2035 total main, 1926 total ironman and a ridiculous amount of side accounts I made for some reason like skillers. I still don't know why I play, why I've quit and returned to the game every few months/years since 2004. Its like smoking, you pick it up and it's incredibly hard to walk away cold turkey.

26

u/Lazypole Dec 09 '21

Yup. Because you can visually see what you’ve missed out on.

Man if I’d only spent the weekend getting Vorkath KC instead of going out to see friends I’d…

Yeah nah. Cold turkey it lol.

They just don’t want to increase the FFXIV queues with even more new players.

3.8k

u/Stea1thFTW18 Dec 08 '21

100%. Come play FFXIV all you want but stay off my server

1.4k

u/eden_sc2 Dec 08 '21

I fully recommend getting into FFXIV in about a month. You won't be playing much of anything with queues being what they are.

600

u/Stea1thFTW18 Dec 08 '21 edited Dec 09 '21

This is true. Queue times right now on a fairly popular server are around 4000 by 6:00pm EST. Which is maybe 3 hours of waiting, and possible connection errors along the way. The options are wait your turn or log in early enough while not getting AFK kicked on a 30 min timer. 100% recommend the game but it's tough to be new right now.

Edit: Just some insight into the server situation. The recent WoW fiasco had led many players to join FFXIV, especially with the release of Endwalker. The supply issues with technology recently have made purchase of more servers exponentially harder even if the funds are there. Veterans of the game often leave the game for a while and come back for new content. Also there are a lot of new players joining in general. A perfect storm of huge queue times.

Edit 2: Queue times are reportedly shorter and 2002 errors reduced after last maintenance update. Some are saying 8k queues are closer to 2 hr waits. However this is untested myself so take with a grain of salt.

372

u/GwentNeverChanges Dec 08 '21

Especially if you want to try it out with the free trial first, which I don't know why you wouldn't, since it includes the entirety of A Realm Reborn AND the award-winning Heavensward expansion up to level 60 with no restrictions on playtime.

No queue priority, though.

110

u/Sat-AM Dec 08 '21

Iirc it's actually basically a queue de-priority. As in, I don't even think you can hop into the queue on a trial account.

62

u/Adrian13720 PC Dec 08 '21

You have to get the starter version to be able to queue during prime time. It will let you get in queue as a trial when it is very short.

Is the game that good?

Is the community that good?

Are the devs that supportive?

What’s the scoop???

I’ve put in ~300 Hours of New World and I’m starting to wonder if the developers are actually trying to kill it at this point..

394

u/blueisherp Dec 08 '21 edited Dec 08 '21

I got to max lvl in new world and in FFXIV, and they're complete opposites. The FFXIV community truly believe the devs care about the game. Aside from queue times and some particular stealth quests, I haven't seen much complaining this expansion.

Compared to New World, FFXIV is much more focused on PVE and storytelling, and is more casual friendly. You don't need an orb to enter a dungeon, and all dungeons are replayable thanks to level sync. If I were to describe class design, I'd say it's like WoW, but all specs and talents are available at all times (instead of having to choose to spec into AoE or single target, for example, you just always have both available), so there's a lot of buttons.

Edit: I would put out a disclaimer that the first 50 levels, which can take 1-2 weeks, is the worst leveling section, but better than doing the same 4 quests like in new world.

66

u/FlowersOfSin Dec 08 '21

Shit I started 2 weeks ago and I'm level 29! Okay, the last week I didn't get to play as much as I could of with the queues and all, but from your estimation, I am slow!

112

u/garrisb7514 Dec 08 '21

Unironically yes. The best proof would probably just be googling the community reaction when the devs said they were delaying the expansion's launch date a couple weeks ago. It's that good.

The free trial is also preeeetty good

→ More replies

203

u/Deckacheck Dec 08 '21

As a VERY basic explanation, the game had an awful initial launch years ago, so devs just recreated the whole game and made it a FANTASTIC mmo. Every expansion has just gotten better and better, which seems uncommon for MMOs these days. Latest expansion just dropped. Also the community is, in my experience, the best community of any online game I've played. One of the best parts of the game is interacting with others.

  1. Yes - if you’re used to WoW it’s an adjustment- it’s very different from other MMORPGs in that it’s very much story-focused. The early story drags a bit, but it keeps getting better and better. I just finished the latest expansion and the story is absolutely incredible at this point, tying together a decade of plot points with a satisfying ending. The gameplay really does have something for everyone at end game- with something like WoW, you have raiding and pvp for end game and that’s about it. But if you don’t like those things, there is also easier endgame progression through grinding relic weapons, crafting, gathering, side story quests, leveling alt classes, housing, glamour, mini games, etc.
  2. Yes - many WoW veterans have remarked on the differences between the communities. Many have pointed out how you can easily be kicked from a dungeon in WoW for low DPS/not understanding mechanics/being new and told to git gud, whereas most people in the FFXIV community will take the time to teach you the mechanics and make sure you get your clear. Of course there are toxic people in every community, but FFXIV definitely has a different vibe. This may also have something to do with the fact that the FF player base has a much larger female demographic than other MMOs.
  3. Yes - the current lead dev “YoshiP” took the game over after its disastrous 1.0 launch, and he and his team have poured their hearts into it. You can see it in the way they listen to the community and the effort they put into solving the game’s problems. Again, there are problems with every game like this, but the FFXIV devs are incredibly supportive and communicate openly. It’s become a bit of a meme at this point, but YoshiP genuinely broke down crying on camera when he had to announce the two week delay for the latest expansion release, he and his team are genuinely that worried about maintaining the trust they’ve built since 1.0.

62

u/FatedHero Dec 08 '21

Adding onto this. During this past anniversary event, there's a moment where you get a cutscene that yoship directly talks to you the player thanking you for playing the game and supporting it. The game is truly built for the players enjoyment and everyone is seen as a human to them. Not just another dollar sign.

Oh and another thing, they just gave everyone a free week of subscription because even though they upgraded and added new servers there's just an unprecedented account of people playing the game rn q times are extremely long. They put out an statement explaining why, what they're doing, and how we can help.

FFXIV is one of the very few game where I feel genuinely loved and supported in every aspect. It's a very heartwarming game when everywhere else I turn I feel punished for playing and not spending my whole paycheck on the game.

That's actually a very recent word, and its purpose is supposedly to help deal with the exact phobia. It's one word made up of 3 recognizable chunks and 1 (less) recognizable to help show how big words can be broken down into much easier to digest segments.

Hippopoto-> Hippopotamus (are big) Monstro-> Monstrous (big, scary) Sesquipedalian -> long words Phobia -> fear

Factorio is a very, very good game, one of the highest rated games in all of Steam.

However, if you have issues with time management or gaming addiction, you can easily lose yourself in it, and you should avoid it.

Don't let the game become your life. Don't let the game stop you from fulfilling your life obligations (school, work, sleep). There's a running joke that people call it "Cracktorio."

186

Was Final Fantasy 14 the one with the big dragon that destroyed everything?

817

u/MarioLuigi0404 Dec 08 '21

Yeah. The game came out in 2010 as what we now know as “FFXIV legacy” or “1.0”. It was really, really bad.

Couple years later they completely nuked the servers by having Bahamut, the dragon in question, destroy everything.

They later relaunched the game as “Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn” or “2.0”. And the game has been going really strong ever since, even becoming the most profitable Final Fantasy game to date.

Unfortunately the first part of the game, ARR and some of it’s patch content, is kinda mediocre at times (6-7/10 I’d say), which turns some people away. But everything after that is amazing.

ARR and the Heavansward expansion are currently playable on the free trial (no limits on play time, too). Though if you want to try the trial, you’d best wait until the Endwalker hype dies down. They had to temporarily make it so trial players can’t log into servers where there’s a login queue.

227

u/Lorberry Dec 08 '21

Slight correction, but free players being unable to queue has always been a thing, it's just that there's rarely actually been a queue prior to EW launch. The tiny queue you normally get when logging in is just a bit of batching for server performance/DDoS protection, to be clear.

Yes. When 1.0 was taken offline for the rebuild into 2.0, a cutscene played of Bahamut essentially destroying the world.

There's a pretty good documentary about it, or if you just want to see Bahamut smash things there's a cutscene. Actual cutscene starts circa 5min, left the link to the start if you wanted to see what the players saw in their final moments in 1.0.

48

u/sanchopancho13 Dec 08 '21

I contend that that cutscene (which starts here) is the greatest FMV of any video game ever. The music (composed by Uematsu) is just so perfectly edited with the movie. It's **chef kiss**

I wonder if part of the problem is that Steam asks me to review games right after I close them. You know, right after I quit because I ran into a bug that really shouldn't have made it into the game Paradox! I've spent thousands of hours enjoying the game and Steam asks me to review it when I'm the most angry at it.

596

u/Spongy_and_Bruised Dec 08 '21

New World hard earned their bad reviews. Between game breaking patches, devs and their moderation being a joke, and the fact they never had working end-game content... They moved themselves from "overwhelmingly positive" to "not recommended". So many people went to go edit their positive reviews to reflect.

224

u/fuckcorporateusa Dec 08 '21 edited Dec 08 '21

I have pretty much never played a game before New World that got decisively worse every time the developers touched it.

I usually tend to blame management and publishers for a lot of the issues that arise with half-finished games on release because they're the money guys cracking the whip and insisting things aren't completed but in this case, I have to throw in the dev team itself, who are a collection of some of the worst coders to ever work for a studio this large, in the entire history of video gaming. And I don't say that lightly, at all, and have had this conversation with three senior level game devs (edit--2 senior, one mere junior dev, I am advised), all of whom completely agree.

79

u/Beachdaddybravo Dec 08 '21

WoW has only gotten worse over time (I skipped BfA though), and after a month or so of the current expansion I’ve realized it really did peak for me in Wrath. There’s just no point imo to play a game that gets less entertaining each time it changes. Granted, it didn’t turn to shit as fast as New World, and New World is the only one of 3 games Amazon was working on that didn’t get cancelled before release. Amazon just has no clue how to run a game studio.

Yeah anything above 70% is good for rotten tomatoes. For IMDb it's more like 7.5 and up

26

u/beeap26 Dec 08 '21

For me and IMDb, movies have to be >6 and series >7.5. Seems like series are generally rated higher than movies.

You’d be missing out on a lot of great films if you only stayed above 7.5.

I have thousands of hours in and I can say that I do not recommend that you play the Critically Acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV Which Includes A Free Trial Up To Level 60 With Award Winning Expansion Heavensward, Resulting In Hundreds Of Hours Of Gameplay With No Restrictions On Playtime!

599

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '21 edited 10d ago

[deleted]

190

u/acatterz Dec 08 '21

Also, all of the content up to level 60 can be several hundred hours of gameplay.

132

u/BigTimeBobbyB Dec 08 '21

And not bad gameplay either. We're talking full endgames from two past expansions (which level scaling keeps relevant), hundreds of hours of main questline, unrestricted access to most combat jobs and all gathering/crafting professions including their job-specific storylines, raids and trials from the first two expansions (including their more challenging Extreme/Savage difficulty modes), etc. It's a hell of a free trial.

35

u/wwtossit Dec 08 '21

For sure. Some of the content becomes a cake walk because the way gear scales from other players getting matched with you, but the mechanics of the trails/raids from earlier expansions are still fun and will be a clear indication of you'd like the more difficult stuff at actual end-game if you decide to stick with it.

You will probably need 50-100 hours just to get to the end of the first patch, which is when the more difficult content with raids and such unlocks. Real quick, yes

I will point out for anyone wanting to try the trial: because of the server shortages, queue times have been a pretty consistent thing for paying players. Unfortunately, Free Trial players are unable to queue.

So you essentially have to keep trying to login until you get in, or you have to try to login during non-peak hours. Once you are in I haven't seen any issues, it's just being able to login that's currently the problem.

The only thing is, with the new expansion, trial players aren't getting a look in. By all means try the game but this week would be the worst to start.

I would try ff14

560

u/SrGrafo PC Dec 08 '21

792

u/mdkubit Dec 08 '21

That's pretty accurate at the moment. But that's because the new expansion that ties all the story for the last 9 years, came out this week. Give it a month or two and things should calm down. And the only severe disconnects are when waiting in the login queue itself. Once in game, it's been rock solid for me.

So I'd say 7/10 accurate for now, and normally 2/10 accurate otherwise

324

u/sargeras117 Dec 08 '21

There's also the fact that WoW players have been migrating over to ff14, overloading the servers as well. Source: said wow player who migrated over

319

u/BigTimeBobbyB Dec 08 '21 edited Dec 08 '21

And a global semiconductor supply drought means that Square Enix literally can't increase server capacity no matter how much they want to. They've been trying all year to throw money at this issue. They're more than willing to pay above market rate. The problem is that there's actually nowhere they can throw the money.

As of last nights maintenance, they've taken their backup development servers offline and redeployed them as extra capacity for the login queue server, hoping to mitigate some of the disconnect issues people are having while waiting in line to log in. If you know anything about server ops for a product like this, you know how desperate a move that is.

FFXIV's login issues are a perfect storm of:

  • A) existing inactive players returning for a new expansion, which is to be expected
  • B) a viral surge in popularity causing throngs of brand new players to flood the game less than 6 months before an expansion launch
  • C) the expansion in question being the much-hyped conclusion to a nearly decade-long story arc as well as following on the footsteps of Shadowbringers, their highest-reviewed expansion to date
  • D) a lack of ability to increase server capacity based on global shortages that Square Enix is powerless to do anything about.

They are quite literally suffering from success at the moment.

111

u/cop_pls Dec 08 '21

B) a viral surge in popularity causing throngs of brand new players to flood the game less than 6 months before an expansion launch

Worth noting that this occurred during an expansion lull for FFXIV. They had already released the last content patch for Shadowbringers. This is generally when sub numbers are at their lowest over an expansion cycle. Instead FFXIV started breaking its records on Steam.

37

u/BigTimeBobbyB Dec 08 '21

Absolutely, and with it being almost all new players it didn't even have the benefit of lessening their projected head counts for returning players. This launch has been a slow motion train wreck they've seen coming for months. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall in the planning room the day Asmongold joined.

It's a new expansion out right now. This is accurate, and if you are a free trial user you can't get into the queue at all if the payers are maxing it out.

They have acknowledged and are working on fixing as many aspects as they can of the login issues. But this queue is mostly from noon EST forwards for me trying. If you get in early and don't log out you're probably golden.

I think a lot about how often people actually come back to change reviews once frequently updated games and new seasons of TV series air or release.

So many times I’ve rated a show like a 6 or 7 and come back later to change it to 8 or 9 once the show grows.

I don’t think a lot of people do this :/

The problem is that the game is usually terrible by all measurable standards, but it's fun to play games with friends because you like your friends.

Should be able to provide two different ratings:
- Solo or with randoms: 1/5
- With good friends: 4/5

11

u/halt_spell Dec 08 '21

Might be something to that. If a game is objectively good you care about it and that can be tough to do with a group where you're trying to keep it light.

League not recommended because it is addicting and very very toxic
WoW is not recommended because it's not as great as it was and is spiraling down
TF2 is currently infested with aimbots and didn't get significantly updated in 4 years but it's loads of fun still

36

u/wex52 Dec 08 '21

Every so often I’ll try an MMO wondering if I’ll ever enjoy it. Last two I tried were Crowfall and Albion. It’s just mindless grinding that feels more like a soul-sucking job than a game.

I’m still waiting for that MMO with good PvP, PvE, complex crafting and player economy, exploration, and plenty of interesting non-combat things to do. I feel like the closest I ever got to this was Star Wars: Galaxies, but it was still far from what I really want.

To clarify for people who don’t know, this is because the new expansion just dropped. Server changes have been announced and things will settle down soon enough.

But yeah queue is at 3 to 5 thousand these days at peak hours xD Enter at your own risk.

EDIT: I’m also not sure paid people get priority. I believe it is ‘first come first served’ in terms of queue spots.

EDIT2: They do. Thank you for educating me. Was not aware they did that

23

u/Florac Dec 08 '21

EDIT: I’m also not sure paid people get priority. I believe it is ‘first come first served’ in terms of queue spots.

"When a login queue is in place, players on the full version of the game will be prioritized for logging in. Free Trial characters will be able to log in after the login queue has been cleared. This allows us to prioritize our paying customers and will mean longer wait times for Free Trial users, but we would like to ask for your understanding on this matter."
