Let me nerd it out

Watt is used for power, volt is used for potential difference, ampere is used for current, ohm is used for resistance

58

u/qjornt Aug 05 '21

Capacitance is measured in Farad, inductance is measured in Henry.

63

u/TPryde_M Aug 05 '21

And my dick is measured in 1 inch.. what a world we live in!

18

u/Carnator369 Aug 05 '21

Saying it twice won't make it 2 inches.

17

u/Abrahamlinkenssphere Aug 05 '21

I could get mine to 2 inches but I’d have to fold it in half a few times

14

u/johnwick190106 Aug 05 '21

correct me if I'm wrong but power doesn't necessarily refer to electricity right

given that

P=Work/time

15

u/Dominoxin Aug 05 '21

Physics student here. You are correct. (Note: work, in this case, is synonymous with energy).

2

u/_0pirates0_ I touched grass Aug 05 '21

The term power is used for energy in common convo but in physics power is the rate of change in energy with respect to time. Savvy?

2

u/DrPwepper Aug 05 '21

That is correct. In every day life, watt is used for power and kW-h is used for energy, power* time = energy so energy/time = power

2

u/DrPwepper Aug 05 '21

Work is a force over a distance, correct? Is it not a specific type of energy? Like a gas can do work on a balloon to expand it or a human can push a box a few meters? In contrast, one can heat up a fluid and if the volume of the container stays the same, no work is done but energy is certainly transferred.

2

u/Dominoxin Aug 05 '21

Yes, work is a specific type of energy (there are other ones, like heat, chemical etc.), but the general version of the power formula is a chenge in energy over time ie.: power = energy/time, where energy can be of any type. (Note: that is only one way of explining that equation and it probably is not the best explonation)

2

u/luukje999 Aug 05 '21

Well a Watt is 1 Joule per second

so it's the same formula just broke up differently.

Work = Volts (U) * Current (I) (or any of the resistance flavours for the EE out there)

For time we just assume it's a second so you end with U*I/1 = Power And deviding something by 1 is doing nothing so you can get rid of that.

1

u/norm_the_bug Aug 05 '21

Volts represented by U. Looks weird ( usually it's V )

1

u/motzak Big ol' bacon buttsack Aug 05 '21

Volt is the unit, U is used for Voltage. Like: Voltage/U = 12V.

1

u/luukje999 Aug 05 '21

In a formula it's U, if it's an amount then yes a V (like 12v for example.

2

u/Daeragor Aug 05 '21

I've seen voltage as E for electromotive force.

2

u/Abrahamlinkenssphere Aug 05 '21

Ohm my god shut uuuuup neeerd

2

u/-_Anonymous__- Aug 05 '21

Are you an electrician?

1

u/_0pirates0_ I touched grass Aug 06 '21

Watt no

I'm a physics student

2

u/Techy621 Aug 05 '21

oh that's really cool

2

u/athonis Aug 05 '21

Ohm is impedance

3

u/Carnator369 Aug 05 '21

So you are saying look for women with low Ohms, got it.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '21

Ohm my god!

I didn't find any posts that meet the matching requirements for r/memes.

It might be OC, it might not. Things such as JPEG artifacts and cropping may impact the results.

I did find this post that is 81.25% similar. It might be a match but I cannot be certain.

I'm not perfect, but you can help. Report [ False Negative ]

Teacher: "What is the unit of power?"

Me: "Watt is the unit of power".

Teacher: "No you tell me, What is the unit of power?"

Me: "I'm telling you, Watt is the unit of power".

One eternity later

Teacher: "Okay young (now old) man! You're going straight to the principal's office with me"

5

u/Minimanek Aug 05 '21

"Hey, I've seen this one! It's a classic!"

6

u/Carnator369 Aug 05 '21

Ohm... watt?

3

u/Accurate_Strain8748 Aug 05 '21

It’s named after James Watt

3

u/Former_Yam_122 Aug 05 '21

Reposty toasty

3

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '21

Watt (W) is the unit of power. It doesn't matter if it's electric or mechanic... In fact what we call horsepower (hp) for cars is just another unit for power. And 1 hp =~ 745.7 W

I'm a nerd, so Watt?

1

u/einsJannis Aug 05 '21

isn't watt the unit for "work" atleast in german its "Arbeit" (which means "work")

3

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '21

No man, work (aka energy) is measured in Joule (J) or Watt Hour (Wh). Power is energy over time (P=∆E/∆t)

1

u/einsJannis Aug 05 '21

ohhhh fuck, your right and I'm a bit tired 😂🤦

2

1

u/FantasticoLP Aug 05 '21

watt a good name

1

u/Cpt_Red_Mello Aug 05 '21

It's an oversimplification but you are somewhat correct

electricity was always there. it was "discovered"

1

1

u/-_Anonymous__- Aug 05 '21

I only know what watts are because of microwaves.

1

u/GoldenretriverYT Aug 05 '21

Don't they teach this basic stuff in school?

1

u/prof_Xytorrak Aug 05 '21

Watt is for power bruh wrong meme

1

u/TheDarkinBlade Aug 05 '21

Watt is not a purely electrical meassurement, it is for power in general, it can even be used for mechanical power.

1

u/Skully540 Aug 05 '21

Haha, science meme go brrr

Dudes, there's old way to measure it. Just use Coulomb

1

u/pellitschkaspastika Aug 05 '21

Watt is dat denn?

1

u/AmishCyborgs Aug 05 '21

Nobody invented electricity, we just learned to use it.

That’d be like saying when trees were invented, or when air was invented.

1

u/Character-Ad3914 Aug 05 '21
