How the frick do you pronounce latinx anyway

546

u/DumbB9 Dec 08 '21

That's the neat part, you can't in spanish

347

u/PabloPoil Dec 08 '21

I had not even realized this before! My mind is blown. So the term 'LatinX' is truly just a way for gringos to feel better about themselves, as I suspected?

257

u/Aeriosus Dec 08 '21

Yup, it's just English-speakers that want to feel good about themselves by imposing their norms onto another language. Not another culture, another language. Because apparently Spanish being gendered (an extremely common language feature, if not a majority one) is too much for their Anglo-centric brains to handle

89

u/king_of_hate2 Dec 09 '21

As someone from California where a decent majority of the population are Latino or Hispanic I've never understood the point of using Latinx ans never understood why change it, nothing wrong with just saying Latino/Latina imo.

36

u/Nuadrin248 Dec 09 '21

Ok I may just be crazy or living under a rock but what is Latinx? Like what is this term(genuine confusion here)? I thought it was Latino/Latina.

31

u/king_of_hate2 Dec 09 '21

Its basically a new, "politically correct" term

20

u/egric Dec 09 '21

That isn't approved by a single latino

13

u/king_of_hate2 Dec 09 '21

That's why it's ridiculous

37

u/zaetep Dec 09 '21

it's supposed to be a gender neutral term to not "offend" anybody. even though the gender neutral term is the "male" one in Spanish already.

Gender neutral I think, although there is already a word for gender neutral Latinos

73

u/Human_Alternative591 Dec 08 '21

Isn’t words with genders a big part of the Spanish language though

42

u/Khajiit_Has_Upvotes Dec 09 '21

Yes, many if not most languages are gendered.

386

u/Vqlcano Dec 08 '21

The gender neutral word is the masculine word. It can be either depending on the situation.

230

u/NPhantasm Dec 08 '21 edited Dec 08 '21

Yes, languages of Latin origin have this aspect different from English, in Portuguese "criança" is neutral although it is a female noun.

105

u/thedeebo Dec 08 '21

Fun fact: English used to have the same thing, but it was dropped in the middle ages. The only place it still really exists is in pronouns. English has the Germanic masculine (he, him, his), feminine (she, her, hers), and neuter (it, its, they, them).

63

u/OnlyThreeRemain Meme Stealer Dec 08 '21

there is one word where masculine/feminine rules exist. Blond/blonde

32

u/KingYohaun27 Dec 08 '21

There’s one more I can think of fiancé and fiancée. Both blonde and fiancée coming from French which (of course) is a latinate not a Germanic language… because in the end English is just three languages wearing a trenchcoat.

8

u/OnlyThreeRemain Meme Stealer Dec 08 '21

English is drunk, as I like to say

21

u/thedeebo Dec 08 '21

Like how people call women "guys" as a general term instead of actually referring to gender

27

u/defias_rouge Dec 08 '21

Guy was a name. Guy Fawkes did a bad thing. People started burning effigies of Guy Fawkes and called them Guys. People started insulting People by calling each other guys. Guy became a non-offensive way to refer to men. Guys became a non-offensive way to refer to groups of people containing men and women. Guys became a non-offensive way to refer to groups of women.

It's evolution of language. It's not wrong. Trying to stop the evolution of language is futile. The meaning of words, the spelling, and the part of speech shift with time.

And I say this as a socially left person. I understand canceling Weinstein but I don’t get cancelling people for 10+ year old tweets or making genuine mistakes. We all have the capacity to grow and learn from our mistakes.

So basically in Spanish, nouns are feminine or masculine. Such as “el queso” (the cheese) or “la chaqueta” (the jacket). As you know, words in English don’t have gender.

So when you say Latino, you refer to men, or Latina for women. Though it is understood that if you say Latino in a general context, you refer to all Latin people.

Recently in the US, some people have started to use the term Latinx, the x referring to “o” or “a” so it could be masculine or feminine, or even so it refers to transgender or non-binary people.

OP’s argument is that “Latino” covers all genders when used in the general sense already, and that to use latinx when speaking English to compensate is cringe.

Eg Brazilians are Latin but not Hispanic since they speak Portuguese. Spaniards are Hispanic but not Latin since Spain is located in the Mediterranean. The Spanish speaking country in Africa whose name I forget is Hispanic but not Latin. Panama is Hispanic and Latin.

(Someone please correct me if I’m wrong)

6

u/RoyalDart30 Dec 09 '21

Hello, since you requested, I would like to present an opposing view.

If I recall correctly, Hispanic is a word that originated with the purpose of designating someone who was from the region of Hispania or had ancestors that were from Hispania, which was what the Romans called the Iberian Peninsula. I think, therefore, everyone who originates from those countries would indeed be hispanic, Portugal included.

That being said, as someone who is portuguese, traditionally speaking, we seem to be more aligned with being designated "lusitano", whereas "hispano" is usually used in reference to our spanish brethren.

It's such a dumb word. The gender neutral term for Latino IS Latino. It's used as both masculine and gender neutral, depending on the context. But if people insist on using another word in English that has absolutely no gender association, then just translate it to English. The word Latino is a short for Latinoamericano, which translates to, as you may have guessed, Latin American. So just use that. POOF—you're nonexistent problem is solved.

Whitey decided they’re fainting couch was insufficient for relieving their misery born of the knowledge that an entire language is gender based. Thus, Latinx was created as a sort of balm, used like a Zamboni on their brain to smooth out any wrinkles that remain from the critical thinking they were forced to endure during K-12.

What annoys me about "LatinX" is how utterly Anglocentric it is. Just because English defaults to being gender neutral doesn't mean other languages do, and that doesn't mean it's a bad thing, it's just how they work. In Spanish, using Latino(s) would be most correct for gender neutral, Latine(s) if you really, really, want to be gender neutral. But no, these English-speakers have decided their own "correct" way to describe people in their own language because a language doesn't match their standards. BTW I am overall very left leaning, but this in particular really pisses me off

I may not have a Hispanic background, but I agree Latnix is stupid and arrogant. Call those what they want to be called. Don't make up some stupid word and think that's what they want to be called. Actually learn the cultures and spend time with them.

I've been saying this for years! And its been really bad as a light skin Latino and hear the most crazy stuff from people who don't realize I'm Puerto Rican. They talk about us like they are doing this huge favor but is always so offensive especially when I've heard the Spanish language is naturally homophobic. It has been infuriating me for years.

In college when I read Latinx “latinks” in this article my white professor wrote, she corrected me with “it’s actually Latin X” in this very condescending way that made me feel embarrassed about not really knowing more about this term. Now I’m learning it’s a term rejected by the Hispanic community because it’s basically used by white people to explain cultures they know nothing about or don’t belong to. Leave it to white people to co-opt someone else’s culture and try to define it for them. I’m not knocking the fact that it’s inclusive because that’s cool, but when a community comes out and says something is offensive, I think it’s best to listen.

I should have been less sloppy with my wording.
