You don’t need “personally” or “for me” they are pointless qualifiers unless you literally speak for someone else too. “Bad English is such a turn-off” is a crystal clear sentence.

I disagree. "Bad English is such a turn-off" and "Bad English is such a turn-off for me" aren't completely equivalent sentences. By saying for me or personally you imply that you are especially averse to bad english. "Bad English is such a turn-off" could be a statement that's true for a large group while it isn't true for yourself.

It could be, but contextually it is pretty clear. Basically when someone says “in my opinion” my ears almost shut off. If you make a statement, the assumption is always that it is from your perspective. If you’re trying to make a universal statement for every single person, then, “bad english is a turn off for all people” otherwise keep it simple and clear. When you make a statement presume everyone knows it’s from your perspective. It’s particularly terrible in work environments, everyone can see you saying it-it sounds weak to add qualifiers like “personally,” “for me,” or “in my opinion.”

I agree that "imo" and the likes of it are overused and often completely unnecessary. Though it can in some cases be used to emphasize that it is YOUR opinion and that you don't expect other people to agree.

u/plant_cell17 Dec 08 '21

Isn't "me" just an intensive pronoun?

1

u/plant_cell17 Dec 08 '21

I wouldn't know. I'm not good with grammar.

It's possible to fool people into believing that you are smart by being great at constructing sentences. It's not hard even yet people are easily fooled. Because of this I use terrible grammar at times. I kinda like it when people don't expect much from me.

EDIT: Also because of this; grammar nazi are usually fucking tards.

u/toastybittle Dec 08 '21

But if you just take out the “for me,” it’s an incomplete, nonsensical sentence 🤔 Probably should’ve just written “Personally, I think bad English is such a turn off.”

u/The-Fumbler Dec 08 '21

I personally think that in my opinion that’s correct for me. That’s what I think for my self personally.
