what's worse is that i've seen it reported as anything from 68 to 75 billion. With that range it's even WORSE they didn't settle on 69.

The CEO's golden parachute will make it very close. $250m at least
I imagine another $50m cost will be there. Possibly another $420m for the nice $69,420,000 price tag

They seem to be very interested in gaining a monopoly on gaming, I'd quite not be surprised if the antitrust regulators get a little lawsuity.

I'm sure they'll get right on that as soon as they're done with Disney, lol.

Game development has a very low barrier to entry and there are still several gaming platforms out there that have zero control from Microsoft. We are so far from Microsoft being a monopoly here in reality.

I still can't believe Microsoft felt the need to acquire Activision Blizzard. Like, how big does a corporation really need to be in 2022? It's kind of absurd.
And let's face it, when Activision and Vivendi merged, Blizzard games started to take a dive in value. Mergers and acquisitions like this never seem to yield positive results for the consumer (i.e., better quality products at cheaper cost). We get shittier products at more cost.
Either way, since Blizzard dropped a bollock with WoW Classic (servers were losing players and they couldn't even offer free character transfers to keep players paying for their subscription), I won't be sending a single extra penny their way.
Though, I must say, I would prefer to see Microsoft dethrone Tencent as the world's largest gaming company.
14
u/Elemental33 Jan 20 '22
Blizzard Activision have been nose diving anyway. No way Microsoft makes it worse some how.

this is one acquisition I'm actually okay with. Microsoft seems to have a better record of treating their employees decently, so maybe they'll fix the issues with activision-blizzard and put them back on track making good games.

u/yumyumpizza69 Jan 20 '22
I’m ok with it as long as call of duty doesn’t become Xbox exclusive
13
u/GoldH2O memer Jan 20 '22
they'd end up losing a lot of money if COD became an xbox exclusive. the majority of COD fans wouldn't just get up and start buying Xboxes just for a single game.
7

it doesnt appear it will, there are rumors but i think theyre just gonna put it on xbox game pass

Only 4 companies in the world have this much available cash on hand currently and Microsoft used half of theirs for this purchase.

u/paragonofcynicism Jan 20 '22
It's a bad sign. People should be worried if Microsoft starts buying up more development studios. They are gonna start pushing their licensing model to games imo.
Game pass is the first step of that. If they get enough studios under them they will probably stop selling games altogether and make you buy game pass and you'll never own any games ever again.
6
u/Ashamed-Ad-4867 Jan 20 '22 edited Jan 21 '22
This is what Game Pass and other game rental services will lead to in the future: The death of retail and/or most, if not all games will be locked behind a subscription.
Hell, 3-4 years from now, ES6 might be a Game Pass exclusive with no option to buy the game outright.
"You will own nothing and you'll be happy" - World Economic Forum.
4
u/Equixels Jan 20 '22
Well.. i don't mind it. I prefer to pay for a service and have a shit ton of games than have to purchase them individually. It's the same thing that happened with blockbuster and netflix all over again.
0
u/paragonofcynicism Jan 20 '22
I think it's funny you bring up netflix like it is a good thing. Netflix's service is shit, it barely has anything and is now basically a vehicle for their own originals. Meanwhile every production studio and their mother now has a subscription service full of garbage.
4
u/Equixels Jan 20 '22
I still prefer them. I have Netflix, Prime Video and Crunchy roll. They're cheap and I always have content to watch on demand and without ads. Also i save money by not buying cable.

I don't think so. Pretty much every game available on xbox in recent years has been on pc as well. So I only see PS as maybe not getting the game, but at the same time CoD is pretty big, they could make more profits by selling it on the competitor's console as well kinda like minecraft
