When you realize that he has doubts, hopes, fears, and dreams just like everyone else. Even if his shit might be slightly more together than yours, that shit will never be completely together.

Some parents make the mistake of never showing it, some kids make the mistake of never seeing it, but truly great adult friendships can happen once both parties open up and understand each other's perspectives.

If anything once dad strength and old man strength combine he becomes even more indestructible.

11

u/Danifermch 29d ago

Fortunately, they are strength repositories that behave like communicating vessels. Dad strength slowly transfers into old man strength.

Otherwise, we would have thousands of Hulks roaming around parks feeding the doves.

Have an uncle like that, he's built like a dwarf... at 63 his arms are still huge and if you hit them it's like concrete.

18

2

No not at all. I’m almost 40 and I still go to dad for advice. Dad is still the guy in the first pic.

2

u/ebobbumman May 28 '22

As my dad approaches 70, I've been physically stronger for quite a while, but his mental strength is just as awe inspiring to me. Me and my sister both struggled with addiction, my brother died several years ago, both his own parents are long dead, and yet he is still a fucking rock for us. Whenever, wherever I have needed him, he is there.

If you are privelaged enough to have good parents who are still alive, maybe take a moment to tell them you love them today.

2

u/MarioPfhorG 29d ago

I’m at the stage in life where it’s neither of these, it’s become somewhere in between. Like we’re equals. It’s strange to have that mutual level of respect and now we speak on common ground.

My dad went to go play darts at his friend's house...25 years ago.

1

u/spunkychickpea 29d ago

When I was about 19, I was at a high school football game with my dad when a fight broke out in front of us while we were in line at the snack bar. (A drunk guy spotted his ex-wife and her new husband and decided to start shit.) As soon as the drunk guy started throwing punches, my dad quietly walked up behind him, wrapped him up in a sleeper hold, and started dragging him away.

The drunk dude kept trying to fight back, but my dad was calmly saying “Don’t fight me, man. You need to chill out.” The drunk guy went limp and my dad gently laid him down on a nearby patch of grass. When I say “gently”, I mean it looked like a guy putting his newborn child to bed. Then he just fucking got back in line at the snack bar and ordered a Diet Coke and a Snickers.

My dad is now 63 years old, and he’s still got that same energy.

1
