This has been 90% of our offense this year. Zero movements. Zero passing. A lot of 1 on 1's. Finch has been as disappointing as the players.

82

u/EntirelyOttonomous Nov 15 '21

Anthony Edwards dunks are great, Anthony Edwards isos make me a very sad timberwolves fan

7

u/Dymatizeee Knicks Nov 15 '21

Him and DLo are a nightmare for other team members because they shoot incredibly inefficiently at a high clip

16

u/daeve Hawks Nov 15 '21

I feel like Finch can only do so much with the personnel he's given. I think letting Rubio go and keeping D'Lo has been bad for Edwards' development.

Growing up, I got to watch Bucks and Wolves games on TV and while I liked the Bucks (Ray Allen/Michael Redd era) I loved Kevin Garnett so I've been on the Wolves wagon ever since.

I kind of regret the decision but I can't bring myself to leave. It'll be that much better if the team ever gets good though. I'm all WI sports for everything else except the NBA and NHL, which I don't watch.

Bad vibes. How’s that going to look tomorrow when the team is looking at film. Think coach will bring it up?

Edit: Since this game they lost a tight game to the Suns and then have won 5, destroying teams along the way.

This clip might be the best thing that happens to the TWolves all season.

KAT has outperformed the rest of his team for his entire career minus one season with Jimmy, it's unfair to blame him for the lack of talent around him. jokic put in a lot of effort to become a good defender this year, shouldn't be maddening

141

u/holdeno [TOR] Jose Calderon Nov 15 '21

It's not that deep. Jokic is way smarter and treats his job like a professional. Which means doing the shit you hate and getting better at the things you suck at while taking responsibility. KATs the have fun and take it easy at work dude. Fine for most jobs not a literal competition.

This is the meaningless psychoanalysis I come to Reddit for

20

u/evanmckee [CLE] LeBron James Nov 15 '21

I do wonder what these two would look like if Jokic was drafted by the wolves and KAT by the nuggets. I have to imagine at least part of why KAT is the way he is comes from being developed by a joke of an organization since he was 19. I'm not saying they'd just swap career paths if they swapped teams. I just think going from being the top dog on a historically great college team that is run well to being surrounded by a terrible organization with a lot of turnover has to have some kind of impact. It's not like he's even the first Timberwolve? Timberwolf? To have this trajectory Wiggins was a year ahead of him and went through the same stuff.. great first few years to regression and disinterest. Now he's with a great organization and doing well.

Their talent seems better than it is, they have a lot of inefficient offensive players

Edwards isn't quite there yet in terms of efficiency

D'lo simply hasn't contributed to winning since Brooklyn and is inefficient + a bad defender

Beasley is just a chucker

KAT is their only consistent efficient scorer and he's passive at times

121

u/Steven_Nelson USA Nov 15 '21

Efficiency sure, but they’d be at least .500 if they weren’t the worst defensive rebounding team in the league. They have the talent otherwise to cover up for efficiency shortcomings over an average game is what I’m saying.

Roster construction is bad. Rosas forgot rebounding exists or something.

Honestly, how often to players need to keep going to teams and under-performing before we realize that maybe the coaching and development is the problem.

There's a reason some teams constantly find good players later in the draft. They MAKE them into good players. I honestly believe that there are players drafted to the Wolves or Kings who would have been entirely different players if they'd been drafted by another team.

All those players would be great on a role players. The problem with Timberwolves is they don't have leadership or an identity.

KAT cant be the number one guy on his own, he needs an all star vet to lead him.

4

u/RaisingQQ77preFlop Timberwolves Nov 15 '21

The unspoken issue with KAT is that while he is a tremendous shooter he literally can not create his own shot. He's basically a big Joe Harris out there which is pretty fucking nice to have except you have to draw them up plays. If the team is going to succeed he needs to be a + on D it's just that simple. ANT is less efficient but he gets more volume because he creates.

→ More replies

176

u/Ordinary-Ant-7896 Bucks Nov 14 '21

TBH, I'm not sure coaching is the issue. They are way better on defense than anyone thought they'd be and I think coaches have the most impact on that end of the floor.

But, yeah, their halfcourt offense sucks and some of that may be on the coach, some of that may be that they have a lot of crappy offensive players and Russell is best suited as a sixth man combo guard than as a full time PG. And KAT hasn't made the leap some were hoping, he is, if anything, worse than he was the past couple years. Perhaps cause he is being doubled a lot, but still disappointing.

Not a good look but I don't blame him. Edwards seems like a ball hog and not a very efficient one at that. At this point in his career anyways

Genuine question though for Wolves fans. Why the fuck is KAT 3rd on that team in FGA? Is he just not shooting? Everything on offense should be going through him. There's no reason for Edwards to be taking 5 more shots than him a game.

94

u/DetrimentalContent Australia Nov 15 '21

It’s easier for DLO/Ant to get the ball to take shots than KAT as they can create for themselves. KAT is doubled every time in the post and is currently turning the ball over on way too many of his post up possessions. He’s also struggling a fair bit in backing down people in the post (apparently he lost weight in the summer) and that really hasn’t helped him. He also prefers to take good shots rather than forcing it and isn’t worried about giving the ball back if the shot isn’t there.

→ More replies

935

u/Mtbnz Nov 14 '21

Edwards is just one of those guys who thinks that the way to being a great player is to keep shooting no matter if it's going in or not. He's good, but he's not as good as he thinks he is, and that's a big problem, because KAT doesn't have that dominant personality to demand the ball even though he's got the talent to deserve it, he just sulks when Edwards gets like this.

It's a bad mix of talent, personalities and lack of leadership within the team.

Watched the Wolves a few times this season, their offense seems very much like a take turn type deal with players iso-ing and others ballwatching. Feel like KAT just needs some new scenery at this point, and Edwards needs to be surrounded by more vets and a better coach to help him kick some of his bad habits out

45

u/kjonah13 Timberwolves Nov 15 '21

I think a consistent coach is what’s needed. Let Finch run things for a few years. He’s a supposed offensive genius, and an established system and identity is what the offense really needs. It is important to acknowledge that the defense has been much better this year, and Finch prioritizes defense first.

u/egirldestroyer69 Nov 14 '21

Agree its tiring af to keep cutting and trying to get in good positions when 95% of the plays end up as a mid/long range throw

66

u/Zachtpres Nov 15 '21

Its usually the ball hogs that chuck the most and get mad at their teammates. I remember one time we had one and immediately after he bricked a contested 3 for the tenth time, a teammate missed a jumper minutes later, the ball hog starts cussing them out.

Some players personalities are fucking cancerous, they cant ever imagine a scenario where they arent the most important. Absolutely sucks to play ball with them, especially when they think there being a coach just showing tuff love, fuck that, we're all adults trying to have fun and compete pass the ball and play d.

22

u/Cool_cid_club Timberwolves Nov 15 '21

I know comparing pick up games to nba games is a stretch, but when I’m playing as soon as I realize I’m never gonna touch the ball, it’s so hard for me to care about the game

This is probably why guys like Lonzo or Caruso have such a high +/-, they might not be the best scorer but they play D and will get guys who are open the ball, gonna need a selfish guys to break that cycle. Now imagine if the Timberwolves got Balls instead of Russell lol.

u/thatoneguyD13 Nets Nov 15 '21

DLo has the best +/- on the team because he's the best passer and he's playing ok defense this year. The unfortunate thing is that KAT's offensive style doesn't really mesh with his.

Think the Cavs would trade KAT for Jarrett Allen?

6

u/Avinse Timberwolves Nov 15 '21

KAT is actually a way better passer imo. He just never really had the shooters to utilize it until this year where he is just not his previous self whatsoever

12

u/Zeratzul Lakers Nov 15 '21

Finally someone with sense, so much DLO slander on these forums. Love seeing nets posters in the trenches.

Do you not see the guy shouting 2 feet away and Edwards not even looking at him? Even guys like Durant do a courtesy pass in that situation as a trust thing. It's on the coach not reining that in but Finch is loved by national media for doing what he does.

Edwards is "dynamic" in that when he's able to score he looks good, but he's not good yet. He's still pretty inefficient and yes he does not pass much for a guy with a usage as high as he has.

Down 25 at the end of the third... It's not a good look, but game was basically over. Still, game minutes are valuable time. Would be nice to see KAT crash the boards. never gonna be a champ if you aren't trying to look like one.

31

u/ElDuderino_92 Clippers Nov 14 '21

KAT was still playing in garbage minutes tho so something was up with him or coaching.

Cavs we’re down 19 in the 3rd and won.

This is a bad look, but I get it. The team has been garbage since he got there, and while that’s partially on him, all that losing gets into you. Add in the personal stuff and yeah, it starts to make some more sense that he’s checking out.

To be by far the best offensive player on your team and to get less shots than Anthony Edward and D'angelo fucking Russel. Man's gotta be frustrated as hell and I don't blame him.

75

u/MG_MN Timberwolves Nov 14 '21

He's partly at fault for not getting shots though. Hes so passive. If he wants shots, get aggressive and demand the ball. Hes such an elite shooter that its frustrating he doesn't take 15+ a night. Some of that is on his teammates ball hogging, but this has been an issue for 7 years and at some point he has to take at least some of the blame. Standing at the break next to a couple teammates and then walking to the backcourt while we have the ball isnt helping. Get open, set a pick, do something

17

u/himetalchemy7 Nov 15 '21

KAT should be taking 10 threes a game based on scheme and his skill

6

u/Xavier207 Lakers Nov 15 '21

Why doesn't coaching just call plays for him to get the ball in spots that benefit his talent. Why is it always KAT needs to demand the ball, and not run plays to benefit KAT.
