u/Just4HobbySubs Nov 28 '21

it is soooo obvious that refs make the game a 'better product' (i.e. create more profit). the entire idea of superstar calls is ABSURD

152

u/NoobAccount123456 Nov 28 '21

I think there was a study showing that calls tend to favor teams that are down in series across all sports

They blatantly try to make every series go to 7

71

u/failbears Nov 28 '21

It makes too much sense not to cash in on a longer series, and we've seen time and time again that calls get really questionable when it gets too lopsided. Yet people still call it a conspiracy theory as if the NBA doesn't want more money.

21

u/Just4HobbySubs Nov 28 '21

it's obvious. the NBA's goal is most profit possible, not the most fair game possible. it only needs to be as fair as optimizing profit

it's a corporation within capitalism, it's only logical for that to be the case

16

u/xepa105 Bulls Nov 29 '21

Then there's the NHL, where it's "we'll try our damnest to call the same number of penalties for both teams every game." So if you're a team that just slashes and cross-checks the fuck out of teams, you get away with murder while teams that are less physical get called for small things to "balance it out."

A ref publicly admitted that last year and the league fucking suspended him until the end of the season, which was already determined to be his last.

u/Leor_11 Nuggets Nov 29 '21

In the bubble, the Nuggets - Lakers series was unwatchable. There were several instances of Jokic, Murray and Millsap getting fouls called on them out of nowhere so that they would sit at the same time for a long stretch. All the while Dwight was literally pushing Jokic out of the court, and LeBron was fouling the shit out if Murray, and nothing was called.

It was outrageous and I'm surprised it was not talked about more

https://whistleblowerpod.com/

69

u/KJ1017 [LAL] Shannon Brown Nov 29 '21

Yeah. And I’d wager the games that they fix are the ones we don’t really think they fixed.

No calls on defensive fouls is probably the hardest way to fix a NBA game. They can get it done much easier and with less flak by calling more of those ticky tacky fouls that technically are fouls but practically not.

Donaghy has even said that other refs fix matches.

10

u/mrbrinks Knicks Nov 29 '21

Yeah. Way easier to just call the foul here and get a GSW for a defensive foul or travel later. IMO. IAmNotABettingRefTho.

3

u/jaytierney79 Warriors Nov 29 '21

Yeah, you bet on the over and then have the refs call a ton of fouls... slow down the game and get lots of free throws.

Nothing changed even though Donahue got caught. They’re just more slick about the shit now.

63

u/PrimeShaq Australia Nov 29 '21

Are they slick tho? Especially with scumbags like Scott Foster who was clearly in cahoots with Donaghy still employed to call high stakes games.

23

u/hereforthesportsbook Nov 29 '21

Every single game Foster refs there’s a huge amount of questionable calls one way and nothing for the other team. If there’s ever a big injury pre game in a game foster will ref he makes sure that team covers like his masters need

7

u/Jyodon90 Nov 29 '21

This needs to be higher. Foster being employed by the NBA should reek corruption

5

u/mrbrinks Knicks Nov 29 '21

It would be fucking crazy but I would love for someone to figure out some way of flagging suspicious ref behavior.

3

u/v0idington Trail Blazers Nov 29 '21

Probably because it's not statistically provable. There's a million stoppages per game, all of which are purely subjective. Worse, there isn't a record of the absence of a stoppage I don't think, which is where an equal amount of the shady shit would happen (ie this play resulting in a no-call).

Also to suggest that gambling happened in this game, and use this play as an example doesn't really make sense. What angle is being pushed by not calling this penalty?

He also makes contact with the left forearm in the last angle of the op

7

u/Herby20 Nov 29 '21

I'm not really seeing anything from the right hand, but the left arm definitely clocks Steph on the back of the head.

6

u/ghostdunks Nov 29 '21

I think it’s egregious because that angle that shows the actual hit was the same one the ref had. I can understand a no call if the angle that shows the hit was from behind or some other weird angle that no ref had, but that’s the exact same angle the ref had. Either the ref was blind and didn’t see it or he deliberately didn’t call it for some reason

From steph’s point of view, he got clocked in the head and nothing got called. Of course he’s pissed, I would be too.

3

u/Herculian Wizards Nov 29 '21

I was convinced this wasn't a foul until I saw that replay. I would also be incensed if I got hit in the back of my skull.

100

u/MortalTwit Nov 28 '21

Defender inside the circle - check

Jumped after the shooter - check

contact made that affected the shooter - check

Defender jumping straight up - maaaaybe? Doesn't matter due to #1 above though.

This was a defensive foul all the way.

13

u/David_H21 Nov 29 '21

The defender can jump straight up in the restricted area. That counts as inadvertent contact. No foul.

We've seen multiple times this season where the offensive player jumps into the defender and gets no call. This is what happened here. It's a good no call. The offensive player shouldn't be able to bait fouls like this anymore.

90

u/erog84 Nov 28 '21

What..... I think you may have the rules a bit backwards there. If the Defender is inside the circle in a case like this, then the defender must leave his feet to challenge, staying vertical. So him going straight up (and not coming into curry) would be very important here.

→ More replies

17

u/WaterIsNotWet19 NBA Nov 29 '21

Bruh it probably was a foul but not for some of the reasons you listed lol

5

u/channingman Suns Nov 29 '21

The circle only matters for a charge, and the timing of the jump does not matter

So the only thing that does matter is that the defender jumped straight up, which he did

5

u/flossdog Nov 29 '21

A Defender can jump straight up inside the restricted area, after the shooter jumps, and not be a foul.

The restricted area just means the defender can’t draw a charge, it’s not automatically a blocking foul.

And he gets an offensive foul the next play lol

u/IllegitimateWalrus Warriors Nov 28 '21

Wasn't the most egregious foul I've seen

21

u/fraubau24 Warriors Nov 28 '21

It's really a culmination of questionable refereeing for 3.5 quarters

u/Simba2204 Warriors Nov 28 '21

That was just 1 of 20 weird calls

Last replay shows the actual foul and why Steph got mad. They showed it on the live Warriors broadcast, it’s what the announcers are referring to in other replays when they say “not this angle”

Man I love JTA, straight in there

weird one imo, Steph clearly initiates but Mann wasn't completely vertical either. tough one to call under the new rules

In my opinion, he looks like he is jumping into the defender. Wouldn’t that be a no call with these new rule changes?

I know I'm in the minority, but I actually think this is the right call. Mann jumped mostly straight up and Curry jumped into him to get the contact.

u/throwaway__rnd Nov 29 '21

He literally hits him in the head twice. How is that remotely possible that wouldn't be a foul? First he hits him hard in the back of the head with his left elbow, and then slaps him across the forehead with his right forearm, near his right wrist. You need your eyes checked.

AAAAAAANNNNNDD he just hit 3 straight 3s in a row. Lmao refs pissed him off.

Correct call

15

u/Lavinesanity Warriors Nov 28 '21

More to do with Steph being called for offensive fouls, including on the previous play, and tick-tacky calls against him all game and then getting none of the same treatment for himself

Was a ramp up of frustration rather than just this one play

14

u/ellenkpao Nov 29 '21

Honest question but this is a correct non call right? According to the rule changes?

Because Steph jumped into the guy on the drive. He could've just gone straight up himself

I'm confused because it does look like he jumped into him

The game was decided with this no call. Blame the ref, Clippers.

u/Rh1-No Suns Nov 28 '21

That is indeed a fucking foul

villian steph arc

Last guy you want to make mad

3

u/ItsJustUsAgain Nov 29 '21

I'm not saying I'm right, but someone's going to have to explain why that's a foul to me. It looks like he went straight into Mann avoiding the basket and Mann jumped straight up.

2

u/backup_waterboy Lakers Nov 29 '21

I think it's a good no call, but there might be a foul on Mann clipping Steph on the side of the head. Steph initiates the contact though, so idk

2

u/ghostdunks Nov 29 '21

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8wpfuZbxRY about 1:02 in the clip, it’s clear he gets clocked in the head by Mann’s left elbow

If Mann jumped straight up, his forearm wouldn’t have made contact to curry’s head like that

Then he went ultra-instinct. GG.

Steph is absolutely in the wrong here tho lol

2

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '21

They’re not calling that for anyone this season

2

u/plasix Nov 29 '21

I haven't been watching much this year but are you allowed to jump into offensive players as the defensive player in the restricted area now?

2

u/sluchhh Nov 29 '21

lol that’s not a foul…

2

u/yalogin Nov 29 '21

So the league has absolutely clamped down on fouls where the offense initiated the contact. I love it. On top of that it makes Steph go crazy, double win.

2

u/hellyeah222 Nov 29 '21

Can't find any comments on the foul/no foul issue, but to me it looks like Mann went up vertical and it was a corrct non-call. Is there a consensus on this? I thought Curry was in the wrong on this call.
