I think the best part of a rebuild is the year before expectations set in. The Nuggets were blessed with this for TWO years. First the year they played Minny in game 82. That game itself was crushing at the time of course, but most of that season was just like "this is fun basketball and this team is good!".

Then the next year was even better. Some people thought they'd be a playoff team, but they were the 2 seed and won 54 games and were just dynamic all year, and they found the Jokic-Murray two-man game. They were unbelievable in the clutch and great in adverse situations like b2bs, all of it was great and no one thought they'd be THAT good.

16

u/renegaderelish Bulls Nov 30 '21

Chicago Bulls riding this vibe right now.

At the moment, some of the most watchable basketball in the league. Passion, movement, and not too much hero-ball but enough to make some great highlights.

If we're being honest, it's hard to see this team beating a superstar in the playoffs though. They'd give anyone trouble, but nobody is expecting anything too spectacular.

8

u/CaesuraRepose Nov 30 '21

I think they're gonna be a dynamite regular season team. All the pieces just fit so well together offensively they're gonna blow the doors off a lot of teams.

The playoffs are a huge issue though as you say. They really have no shot against the Nets or Bucks if those two teams are healthy. Giannis is uncoverable for them. KD the same (hell, honestly, Aaron Gordon absolutely cooked them in the first matchup vs. Denver because... they had to use DDR and Zach and Caruso against him, and he's very good at pounding smaller guys - they survived only because Jok didnt play).

3

u/sorcshifters Nov 30 '21

Patrick Williams is our big guy defender. He was pretty good last year as an 18 year old rookie and can theoretically only get better. He’s out for the regular season but if he’s fit and ready he’ll be back for the playoffs.

But yeah I agree bucks, nets, and Philly to me are too much. We need Patrick Williams to explode and be healthy and at least one more 3&D bench player to really compete.

Although expecting a 4th overall pick off a decent rookie season to be good and one solid bench player away from serious contention is a pretty good spot to be at to be fair.

I thought on a controlled tip the rebound goes to the tipper not the tippee

1.3k

u/rake2204 Pistons Nov 30 '21 Wholesome

The NBA's video rule book page states:

“An individual rebound is credited each time a player retrieves a live ball or purposely taps a live ball to a teammate immediately following a missed field goal attempt or a missed free throw attempt."

If we're being real, that was a tap with intent, which would technically probably mean the rebound should not be credited to KPJ.

However, since the ball loitered around on the ground post-tap, it seems that could leave the door open just wide enough for a scorekeeper to make the somewhat disingenuous take that the ball wasn't tipped to a teammate but to an open space, at which point a teammate retrieves it (even though the only reason it hit an open space rather than another player is because everyone avoided the ball like the plague).

373

u/CustodialApathy Knicks Nov 30 '21

I'd read it as getting tipped to the player who refused to touch it, with kpj cleaning it up for the actual rebound

266

u/StuckInAtlanta Hawks Nov 30 '21

This is the right technical interpretation IMO because if an opposing player had scooped up the ball while everyone was avoiding it there’s no way you would call that a rebound and then steal. Definitely still a loose ball until KPJ gets it.

→ More replies

34

u/canadageese1 Knicks Nov 30 '21

The law says: "purposely taps a live ball to a teammate." It doesn't say "purposely taps a live ball to a teammate who then picks it up." So it shouldn't matter if the teammate picks it up or not. Only matters what the intent of the tapping player is.

80

u/Slobbin Nov 30 '21

Yes, it does.

Scenario:

I am in the NBA I am on offense. I tap the ball, on purpose, to my teammate. It hits him in the face. The defense recovers the ball.

Am I credited with an offensive rebound?

I doubt it.

→ More replies

12

u/beforeitcloy [SAC] Mitch Richmond Nov 30 '21

Well it’s already in the books as a triple double so obviously in the real world the intent of the tapping player actually isn’t the only thing that matters.

11

u/junkit33 Nov 30 '21

It should have 100% gone to the tipper. But scoring is ultimately subjective and nobody really cares enough to challenge it. It’s not like he broke some important record because of it - just a run of the mill triple double.

6

u/HipsterDoofus31 Nov 30 '21

When I use to play fantasy basketball Tyson Chandler would always get credit for the rebound when he would slap the ball away and any teammate picked it up. That was his thing, just slapping it and getting a rebound. I don't know how the slapper doesnt get the credit here.

I’ve worked in live scoring before, basically for Sengun to get credited with that rebound it would have needed to be controlled by the player he tipped it to. He wasn’t tipping it to KPJ, his teammates let him come pick up the ball

taps a live ball to a teammate

That's the official wording. If the tap doesn't go to a teammate, it's a loose ball.

Thus, smart of the Rockets player to simply let the ball go, which means it's still a live rebound.

If you tap the ball to no one, you don't get a rebound for that. So it's "clever" or a loophole to intentionally not receive the tip, but what else can you do? Not like someone tipping the ball out of bounds on purpose should be a rebound.

Didn't he have some kind of freakout on the Cavs and get permanently benched?

He had a few off-the-court issues, like a felony charge of mishandling a firearm. Then he got really mad when his locker got moved for someone new on the team. I personally thought (and still think) he'll mellow out as he gets some more experience under his belt and he'll develop into a good player.

During the Harden trade when the Cavs acquired Taurean Prince, they moved KPJ's locker to make room for him. That set him off. Kinda justified from KPJ, but he probably went way overboard to justify shipping him off

The fuck? They forced a dude to move lockers for Taurean Prince? Taurean the definition of "some guy" Prince? I'd be upset too.

141

He wasn’t even playing at the time. Got gun charges in the off season and the Cavs had him in some sort of program to help him get straight, but wasn’t playing until he hit certain benchmarks. Then he flipped out on the entire team and front office including the GM. Like screaming tantrum

58

u/ChristianNDR Nov 30 '21

Exactly. And the game wasn’t in any danger at that point. If they did this down or in a close game, I would think this was super immature. You could even tell KPJ was just going to let it go too. He was already running back up the court when he missed the rebound.

“An individual rebound is credited each time a player retrieves a live ball or purposely taps a live ball to a teammate immediately following a missed field goal attempt or a missed free throw attempt. No individual rebound is credited in situations where the whistle stops play before there is player possession following a shot attempt. Instead only a team rebound is credited to the team that gains possession following a stop in play. On this play, #14 in the blue uniform, Gary Harris, is credited with the defensive rebound for controlling the ball since his teammate did not deliberately tap the ball to him.”

Technically I think it will hold up because it wasn't tapped directly to a teammate, but to space and the teammate had to go get it.

Obviously this scenario wasn't really considered by the rule makers. I'm ok with that.

Westbrook bout to play this during the team film session.

I must say that I am actually very impressed with how the Rockets have been playing. They were 1-16! Now they are 4-16 (including the win against the Thunder). And they ended up beating the Hornets and the Bulls, two teams that are doing pretty good.

This is actually kinda the right approach to triple doubles. They're sort of a ridiculous made-up stat so just have fun with it, especially if you're up big in a season that won't have a lot of Ws.

u/thefootballhound Nov 30 '21

That, and his contract probably incentives triple doubles.

Boys supporting boys, you love to see it

8

u/ButtholePasta Nov 30 '21

This is great because KPJ wasn't even fishing for the rebound. His teammates wanted him to get the accomplishment.

7

u/I_ama_Borat Trail Blazers Nov 30 '21

But that’s a controlled tip, that wouldn’t be his rebound, right?

Amazing the impact Westbrook had on the Rockets culture in just one season.

2

u/Camden_yardbird Nov 30 '21

I mean the great thing about this is you can't get mad at him for stat padding. He was ready to run the floor and play the game. Its not a Ricky Davis situation.

2

u/macbook_amateur Nov 30 '21

Ricky Davis wishes he had these teammates

2

u/Healthy_Telephone998 Raptors Nov 30 '21

Honestly, KPJ did not care about that rebound. To him , its a team game
