The second there was a giant runway for him with only one defender it was a wrap… You gotta build that wall or he’s scoring. What a game 40/12/9 for the reigning FMVP

16

u/Steven81 Dec 02 '21

2 years ago had the record @ at the rim scoring IIRC. This is nothing new, what's new is that people have stopped missing how absurdly good Giannis is at finding angles when laying it up. Obviously he is better than even then, but kid was always good. I mean he can't score from distance obviously; from 10 ft in, though, he was always a nightmare, can't recall the last guy who is using angles so well and so frequently from that close.

Do people actually say this? Like I don't watch that much Bucks, but I followed their entire finals run from the Nets series onwards and it felt like I spent my entire time watching Giannis drive while saying to myself "no way he finishes that" followed by Giannis inevitably finishing that.

Dude doesn't just have touch, he's got elite touch.

10

u/FuckingKilljoy Bucks Dec 02 '21

James Harden kinda sparked it and the haters took it from there. Some of the shit Giannis was getting thrown at him was just hilarious in how dumb and untrue it was. Just check that video by Rusty Buckets about the NBA media and Giannis. For some reason the nicest, most wholesome guy in the league got endless shit thrown at him because he didn't bring a team of role players and lucky draft picks and championship in his first few years

7

u/Successful_Priority Dec 02 '21

Now I see people admit he has touch but they downplay it due to his height and huge wingspan. I remember one person using Zion as a player with amazing touch around the paint yet somehow Giannis is lower?

3

u/yungchigz Bucks Dec 02 '21

He’s one of the best finishers of all time at the rim, the numbers speak for themselves. I think the argument to downplay him is that his athleticism gives him easier looks at the rim than anyone else and it’s not his touch that’s special but you’re right you only have to watch him a bit to realise that’s stupid

That's how you close a game. Giannis gets a lot of flak for being boring and has no skills coz all he does is to drive to the basket. He is taking advantage of the entire NBA. While everyone just shooting 3s, he is driving to the basket in every possession. He just bullies everyone and it's fun to watch.

55

u/Marozia Bucks Dec 02 '21

I don't know much about how travelling works, but it looks like he took three steps without dribbling before shooting the ball - that's not travelling?

38

u/Vegetable_Clerk7328 Bucks Dec 02 '21

The first step he was still in a gathering motion. The refs almost always give the benefit of the doubt with the zero-step to guys like Giannis and Harden, because they've mastered the move.

30

u/rjcarr Supersonics Dec 02 '21

And because it's perfectly legal.

It's super hard to tell, at game speed, if a gather was in the air or if a foot is down, so the NBA just said fuck it, a foot can be down during the gather. FIBA did the same thing and calls it "step zero".

Now, the gather should be in motion, and moving toward the next step, and although this play was pretty clearly legal, Giannis and others get away with bad gathers sometimes.

6

u/FuckingKilljoy Bucks Dec 02 '21

One of those things that your rec league ref would call because they want to follow the letter of the law while NBA refs at least kinda respect the flow and entertainment value.

If travels were called by the letter of the law the games would be ass and a lot of exciting players would become kinda lame

Yeah, I tried to say I don't know understand how it's typically called, but I still got a few downvotes for it. I'm a Bucks fan and obviously don't want it to be called on Giannis on a game-winning play, but I really don't know what exactly the rule is.

13

u/jolis16 Dec 02 '21

The rule is that you start counting steps AFTER the player has fully gathered the ball, meaning he has full control of it after grabbing it. Giannis was technically still gathering the ball in his first step, so it is counted as a 0 step. And then he just does a 1-2 for the layup.

→ More replies

6

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '21

it's basically as close as it can possibly be. if giannis gets his left foot down before he gets control of the ball, it's legal. i'm not even sure going frame by frame.

5

u/bobdolebobdole Dec 02 '21

I went frame by frame best of my ability, and it really looks like his foot is not down when he got control. I really don’t care about traveling unless players are clamoring for it. If Charlotte doesn’t care I don’t care.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '21

i thought so too, but these screenshots changed my mind

https://imgur.com/gv5p0hX

looks like he doesn't bring his off-hand to the ball until basically the moment he plants, which is usually when control is considered established.

u/DCChilling610 Dec 02 '21

Everyone afraid to say it, Bud a good coach. Rests his players right, calls the right plays, no unnecessary risks. This the guy you want for your franchise players.

My grandpa is like that but his thing is "there is no defense in the NBA" because he's used to the Badgers scoring 60 points a game.

Couldn't possibly be because the Badgers haven't had even one future pro on their roster in 8 years but ehhhhh

Giannis is killing them in adv stats. It's only close because of the worse record. For as long as the Bucks are so far back from Nets/Warriors Gianni's has no chance in fact. Seeding/wins are exceptionally important when it comes to MVP selection.

Gordon Hayward on full tilt watching this.

Sorry that's not a euro step. Both his steps were to the left of the defender. Looks more like a reverse layup.

For the first time in a long time, I get the feeling that Charlotte is getting there. Like they're a good trade away from becoming a legitimate contender and competing with the likes of Milwaukee and Brooklyn.

I'd like to see them sign multi year deals to LaMelo and Miles Bridges. For sure keep Hayward who provides valuable experience for the younglings. Then maybe in a year or two he can come off the bench and support the team from there. Morph into Charlotte's Igoudola.

From there everyone's available, who you keep until the opportunity arises to make a splash. I'd like to see them try to trade for someone like KAT or more viable trades like Jarrett Allen, Sabonis or Miles Turner.

Definitely not Porzingis though.

Bud drew up that final play beautifully. Great spacing left Giannis in ISO one on one with a running start. The percentages don't get much better than Giannis in the paint. If they doubled up on Giannis that's going to leave either Grayson, Pat or Middleton wide open for certain death. Charlotte was in no win situation our lineup is sick to closeout games. Jrue playing QB has easy reads if Giannis is one on one he gets the ball if they double up somebody pass them the open shot for the win.
