With rhythm like that, you should start playing drums

1.1k

u/KrAzyDrummer May 28 '22

I used to count down from a minute while waiting for food to heat up in the microwave. Would periodically check to see how far I had drifted and correct accordingly. Also did the same for street walk signals. Great way of internalizing tempo.

724

u/DJCockslap May 28 '22

I'm a cook. The number of timers you hear go off in the cooking profession is absurd. My internal clock is crazy accurate because I've spent a decade preparing for timers to go off

536

u/jtotal May 28 '22

Almost 20 years for me.

The feeling of "That should be going off right abo--ah. There it is" never gets old.

201

u/RoastLiver May 28 '22

This is me in the morning. I'll wake up and think ah it must be about time for my alarm now, reach out for my phone and %90 if the time it goes off as I pick it up. Continually blows my mind.

1.3k

What was your technique?

3.1k

u/coolbean36 May 28 '22

Letting everyone else go first so I could get the rhythm of the timer if you know what I mean

683

u/tlk0153 May 28 '22

Very nice. I noticed how you were using your right hand tapping your thigh to follow the rhythm

826

u/coolbean36 May 28 '22

yup, thats the strategy right there!

160

u/TheloniousGreen May 28 '22

That's exactly how I do it. Though I'm still not as accurate. I'm a musician and a good key reference is any "March". John Philip Sousa is the easiest reference. His famous marches are at 120 bpm. So if you internalize the melody and tap the tempo, every two beats is a second. So sing it in your head and it's real easy to get timing down to an exact second.

42

u/Meaca May 28 '22

Thanks, this was great advice! Last time I played a Sousa was 5 years ago and 60 beats of it in my head was 27.97 seconds... for comparison 30 'mississipi's was 35.24, so much more accurate.

12

u/HelpfulSeaMammal May 28 '22

Stars and Stripes Forever?

Nah bro. Stars and Stripes for Counting Seconds More Accurately

→ More replies

14

u/GoodDog2620 May 28 '22

Billie Jean by Michael Jackson is also 120bpm if that helps anyone

14

u/TheloniousGreen May 28 '22

Yup! Any 120 bpm song will work. Sousa is easy cause "Stars and Stripes Forever" is almost engrained in (at least American) minds. And it has stronger down beats on the melody. Very strict and straightforward melody. Billie Jean's melody is much more syncopated, but if you can internalize the drums in Billie Jean, boom you got it.
