Just finished the original Half-Life. Looking forward to starting the second game today!

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '21

HL2 Update is free and has achievements: https://store.steampowered.com/app/290930/HalfLife_2_Update/

1

u/Cryio Aug 31 '21

How about trying Black Mesa?

2

u/SuperRyek Aug 31 '21

I figured I’d play through that after the rest of the series. Plus I already own HL2 and the episodes.

1

u/Cryio Aug 31 '21

Not a bad idea

1

u/SebaHome Aug 31 '21

I did too recently! Now I’m playing through Opposing Force. Really solid expansion so far at least.

1

u/SuperRyek Aug 31 '21

I have the HL1 expansions too but I’m kinda itching to play HL2. I’ll probably play Opposing Force eventually.

8

u/bahumat42 Aug 31 '21

I've been indulging in in total war warhammer 2. First total war i have gotten into since the original Rome.

I suck at it, but the mechanical depth, the charm of the game, the character and world lore and the fantastic set piece battles keep bringing me back.

I would be excited for its sequel if I wasn't sure my pc couldn't handle it.

3

u/Spies87 Aug 31 '21

What is your specs if I might ask?

I can't recall the motherboard.

2

u/Cryio Aug 31 '21

1

u/bahumat42 Aug 31 '21

Sorry 390 I misstyped

2

u/StayFrostyZ 5900X || RTX 3070 Sep 03 '21

Kinda a rough time for a GPU to go out. Maybe she just needs a good ol cleaning, repasting and new thermal pads!

1

u/bahumat42 Sep 04 '21

I dont know how confident I feel about doing that, il probably put up with it limping along until it cant

3

u/ViditM15 Sep 01 '21

Oh man, Warhammer 2 was my first ever strategy game (I too started recently, around 3-4mo ago) and I completely feel you about the mechanical depth! Its soo much but oh so interesting!

I finished my first successful vortex campaign with Tyrion just 2 days ago and had an absolute blast!

7

u/sharpShootr Aug 31 '21

I’m feeling like I’m in a slump right now. I just fully upgraded for the first time in 8 years and I’ve downloaded a good portion of my library. But nothing seems… fun… I have hundreds of hours of Rimworld, Arma3, RS6 Siege. But looking at them now I can’t bring myself to play anything. I even splurged and got the complete remastered Mass Effect series but I got 50 minutes in and just put it down…

Its really annoying actually….

5

u/SuperRyek Aug 31 '21

Maybe take a break for a few days. I’ve done this and the games felt fun again eventually.

4

u/sharpShootr Aug 31 '21

I havent had my computer for 2 months. I gave away the old one and I finally built the new one a few days ago. So I’ve definitely looked forward to relaxing playing some games but now that I can, I just don’t want to.

3

u/AreYouWinningS0n Aug 31 '21

There are some new titles coming out that might change your view. Sometimes the old ones aren’t exciting enough to get you back.

1

u/sharpShootr Aug 31 '21

I havent seen anything catching my eye. But ill keep a look out. Actually came to this subreddit to browse more in depth rather than just letting it show up on my home page like I normally do.

1

u/ThrAsh2win Sep 01 '21

Same here, I've lived through my childhood looking at others play awesome games and now that I can do that myself, it feels like I'm doing a chore.

I am in the same place. I got seriously bored with MMOs. The only games I have enjoyed of late are the ascent and MSFS. Everything IO am finding very much MEH!

6

u/HertzaHaeon Aug 31 '21

Psychonauts 2.

An absolute delight. GOTY material.

2

u/good_morning_magpie Aug 31 '21

Same, and I agree wholeheartedly. Stellar game.

If that era of gaming makes you grind your teeth you can live without playing it

1

u/HertzaHaeon Sep 01 '21

The sequel begins with a quick and fun recap of the first game. You're good!

4

u/RHINO_Mk_II Ryzen 3700X & RTX 2070Super Aug 31 '21

Just finished Hades, about to jump into Humankind.

Hades was good, but somewhat annoying in that I believe the player losing their first few runs and then winning after that has less to do with learning to play and more to do with the obscenely OP permanent power buffs that they get via the darkness resource and trinket effects. I went from 0-11 learning one weapon to 10 straight wins using all weapon types because of those buffs. It kind of felt like it cheapened the payout of beating a run while being designed to make it nearly impossible for a casual player with no knowledge of the game to win on their first run or two.

2

u/RHINO_Mk_II Ryzen 3700X & RTX 2070Super Sep 01 '21

First impressions of Humankind:

Not terrible, not great. A reasonable first attempt at a civ-like from someone besides Firaxis. I loathe the "influence" gate in this game and in similar games like Stellaris that arbitrarily prevent one faction from taking over all nearby territory even if they are strong enough to do so and nobody else is around. Music is fantastic, the cutscene writing is pretty good, some of the other writing gets old when your advisor informs you for the 19th time in 6 hours that you have hit one end of the civics spectrum. Also, the way you pick a random new culture for each era is kinda weird but whatever. It's more or less what I expected, now imma shut up and go Conquistador the next continent over from me since I just picked Spain.

1

u/Iama_traitor Sep 03 '21

I'd argue things like influence aren't arbitrary and are abstractions of logistical and political constraints on expansionism.

1

u/RHINO_Mk_II Ryzen 3700X & RTX 2070Super Sep 03 '21

I would agree if it weren't for logistics and politics both being in these games as separate systems.

u/Cookiesrdelishus Aug 31 '21

Skyrim.

Just got a brand new PC build for my birthday. Real beefy mf.
So how do I test it's performance? Modded Skyrim of course. So far, its running hella nice. Got around 140 mods so far + ENB. Running solid smooth fps.

2

u/OhMyBruthers Aug 31 '21

Nice I’m playing through Morrowind again for the first time in years. Probably gonna do oblivion and Skyrim again afterwards. Maybe by the time I’m done TES 6 will be out.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '21

I tried Skyrim back on the 360, thought it wasn't for me. Then years later got my first proper gaming PC, played with some visual mods only and finished it, with plans to go back again. Awesome game.

4

u/CommercialOwlPC Aug 31 '21

Since I recently got my 3080 I'm testing with Metro Exodus PC enhanced edition, it's amazing how good that game looks

3

u/Cockblockuly Aug 31 '21

just curious how are you liking it so far? I got it just to test my 3060 ti lol but i didn't really enjoy the gameplay or the story all that much so i never got that far

3

u/CommercialOwlPC Aug 31 '21

Honestly at the beginning I just wanted to try the graphics card, I didn’t think I would like the game since I usually don’t enjoy this kind of mystery/scary games, but I ended up loving it, I was even thinking on getting the previous games and giving them a try after I’m done with this one, the story is interesting, you never know what you are going to get and the gameplay is nice, they put a lot of detail into it, I guess is not for everyone but I’m sold now, lol

2

u/rbrutonIII Aug 31 '21

Try giving it a little more time, I was on the same boat and gave it up. Decided to give it another go and it got much better once the initial setup is done and you have some weapons etc. Although, the story is pretty predictable

1

u/mensgarb Sep 02 '21

Am I the only person who didn't think it looked all that good? Also played it on a 3080 and was pretty unimpressed throughout most of it.

2

u/CommercialOwlPC Sep 02 '21

Interesting, for me is one of the best looking games I've played (realistic graphics speaking), but I guess looks really depends on each person, for example I don't like how Control graphics looks, but most people seems to think it looks amazing, and that's fine

2

u/mensgarb Sep 02 '21

Great comparison because I'm one of those people who thought Control looked really good!

2

u/High_MacLeod Aug 31 '21

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen 🐲

I started modding, so I'm not really playing :P but I recommend it.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '21

I don't remember there being a great modding scene. What mods are you using?

1

u/High_MacLeod Sep 01 '21

Hi. I'm using "All Quest items and Cosmetics": https://www.nexusmods.com/dragonsdogma/mods/666

"ComicToon Reshade": https://www.nexusmods.com/dragonsdogma/mods/669

And "dinput8": https://www.nexusmods.com/dragonsdogma/mods/96

Although dinput8 is more like a cheat tool you can use to tweak things like carry weight, stamina, time and all. It's great to testing mods and stuff.

3

u/Sluehead Aug 31 '21

I just started playing Conquest of Elysium 5. It is a turn-based strategy game with roguelike elements made by the developer that does the Dominions game series. If you're an old-timer, it plays a lot like the old Warlords games but with more depth. Races play differently, spellcasting, summoning, resource types, etc.

I am enjoying it. While I'd say it's lighter on strategy than the Dominions games it has far less micro-managing as a result. Funnier random events happen. Like a portal to Hades or some other plane opening up near your capitol. You can even enter those planes and take them for yourself!! The randomness makes for a perhaps sometimes unfair gameplay, but I find it entertaining.

I just recently started a coop game with my brother. That is where the game shines I think. Overcoming, or failing to overcome, trolls and horrors and demigods assaulting your civilization while a friend laughs at your misfortune. Turns tend to be short and sweet, which also make it a great coop game.

3

u/Dyllanj Aug 31 '21

Star citizen. Backing since 2013, came back a few months ago and its turning into a legit game, only thing I play now, bc yk, its actually playable. Its amazing. I was big into Arma 3 mods like Exile for years, and star citizen is scratching that open world itch.

1

u/GandalfTheToked Sep 02 '21

Would you say now is a good entry point for someone who hasn’t played the game?

Is this like TLauncher for Minecraft? I've wanted to try DayZ for a while now, but I dont want to spend money on something I might not enjoy so I want to try before I buy.

2

u/Nanil9 Aug 31 '21 Silver

I'm finishing up GTA VC for the first time ever and trying to get everything in MGSV.

Looking at my list, what would you recommend I play next?

3

u/RHINO_Mk_II Ryzen 3700X & RTX 2070Super Aug 31 '21

Transistor and Pyre since you like the other 2 Supergiant games.

The Messenger since you liked Hollow Knight & Celeste.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '21

Playing COH:2 in anticipation of COH:3. Also enjoying Valheim as I await New World.

2

u/AlarmWrong1407 Aug 31 '21

Quake Remastered Deathmatch.

2

u/Ra_Sungod Aug 31 '21

State of Decay 2.

Astroneer.

2

u/Realdoctorman123 Sep 01 '21

Witcher 3 and Chivalry 2. I made a post about chivalry 2 recently and how amazing it is but got downvoted to hell because people hate the epic platform. Regardless of the platform that you are forced to play on, the game is damn good and great fun. Can do it for hours easily. I can't believe I have skipped on witcher 3 for as long as I have. The game is gorgeous, the missions are fun, challenging, and the game is great to play.

Humankind

2

u/Solar_Kestrel Aug 31 '21

Is it the Civ killer it was touted to be prerelease?

1

u/Aktin Sep 01 '21

No. It's decent but IMO civ is much more polished.

Try it on gamepass for $1 it has some cool systems but it's no civ.

2

u/duperre Aug 31 '21

Tormented Souls. Highly recommend it to anyone that likes horror classics that feature tank controls.

2

u/vannhh Aug 31 '21

Just switched over from Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead to the Bright Nights fork. Now I understand the friction between the two communities and it's a clear example of the argument that too much realism detracts from enjoyment. Both forks are fun af to play, but it's just so much more enjoyable when you dont have to worry about the length of items in your inventory and when the game balancing isn't so idiotic (looking at you bow and arrow).

2

u/Solar_Kestrel Aug 31 '21

Psychonauts 2 is really good, but feels weirdly anachronistic. Absolutely loving it so far.

2

u/Cryio Aug 31 '21

Resident Evil 2, the original PS1 game, running on Dolphin with the HD Projects. Recently finished RE4 for the first time ever and my God, what an amazing game. So now I'm in a RE mood.

1

u/notsureifdying Sep 01 '21

Did you play the remake? Holy shit best remake ever.

2

u/Cryio Sep 01 '21

I want to properly play through all the scenarios in the original before playing the remake, to see all the changes the ended up doing.

u/Low_Bit_Rate Aug 31 '21

Swords of legends online and Naraka

1

u/tabajam1 Aug 31 '21

Started playing destiny 2 again after a year. I’m liking the direction they’re going again so I’m pretty excited!

1

u/TheParqs Aug 31 '21

How do the seasons work now, still the same? I had quit in October of last year because it was so deflating to have to grind a battle pass every couple of months and it felt like as each new season came a lot of my previous work became irrelevant.

2

u/tabajam1 Aug 31 '21

Yeah I stopped because of that same reason. But now for this new season, the level cap was increased by only 10 instead of 50 so the grind isn’t so bad anymore. They also added seasonal challenges that net you a lot of XP, and are the easiest way to level up the BP. The gameplay loop seems more fun too, with way more weapons to chase and new perks. And if I recall correctly, this is the last season before the next new expansion which releases in February 2022, so you’ll have a lot of time to play!

And the best thing IMO is that they stopped sunsetting

1

u/TheParqs Sep 01 '21

It looks like beyond light is on sale too. I might just have to jump back in…. Thanks!

1

u/Impellicamper Sep 01 '21

Oh... i quit by the end of the Warmind expansion (even got myself a cool medal from bungie store ... ALLMIGHTY!)

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '21

just started Sea of Thieves

1

u/Damoklez_Aeonire Aug 31 '21

Same here, I love it so far. I get murdered, robbed and sunk all the time but I don't care, it's great!

5

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '21

i play solo, which probably isnt the way to play this but i am a grown ass man who is shy

3

u/last_picked Sep 01 '21

I feel you. I am always joining discord servers to find people to play with. Then I get shy and end up lurking and random matchmaking. Lol

2

u/notsureifdying Sep 01 '21

I like the loner life though. Call me Capt Jack Sparrow

1

u/firsmode Aug 31 '21

Destiny 2, The Forest 2, Dying Light 2

2

u/showermilk Sep 04 '21

is forest 2 out now? how do you play? totally down for this if it's any good

1

u/HaloSlippin Sep 03 '21

How are you playing Dying Light 2? Is there a beta or something?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '21

Since my country has been in lockdown again (NZ,) I've started getting back into gaming on my PC. Been enjoying Aliens: Fireteam Elite and Vintage Story. Both games I play with a buddy and talk over discord. I tried Naraka: Bladepoint, thought I was amazing, then realized I just fought bots and that I'm actual trash lol.

Finished Trails of Cold Steel and that ending definitely was intense. Set the 2nd game up perfectly Imo. Azure/Cold Steel Spoilers That Crow reveal as C was perfect Imo Crossbell using KEA's aions to cause destruction on Garrelia Fortress. Makes me hope Kuro no Kiseki shows Calvards reaction as well

Anyway I've almost immediately moved on to the 2nd part! Loving these games so far.

2

u/Solar_Kestrel Aug 31 '21

I'm pretty outspoken in my opinions on CS2, but I'm right there with you on CS1's ending--easily the best cliffhanger in a series famous for great cliffhangers. Everything after, "Resound, resound o' voice everlasting!" is just... utterly perfect.

1

u/H2Ohexagon Aug 31 '21

Currently grinding Nuclear Winter in Fallout 76 since it sunsets sep 8

1

u/Sojoez Aug 31 '21

Picked up and started playing Borderlands 3. Just because I felt the need for a fun shooty game. Story is meh and the characters are cringy but tolerable.
The shooty-shooty is fun though! Nothing beats the feeling of a maniac running at you with a rusty axe only for them to disappear in a cloud of red after you shoot them with a gun!

1

u/PanicAK Sep 01 '21

Borderlands 1 is one of my all time favorites. 2 and 3 feel like they're trying way to hard, and couldn't finish them.

1

u/shitty_bison Aug 31 '21

Working through the mass effect legendary edition again, achievement hunting as so playing on insanity difficulty.

Holy moly its like a whole new game compared to standard difficulty. Finished 1 and 2 as adept and soldier respectively and just started 3 as a sentinel.

1

u/LiamoBe Aug 31 '21

Minecraft for this week!

1

u/Tumbleweedwhacker Aug 31 '21

Dead Space 2 Hardcore Mode.

I replay this and the first one once a year since they were released, because I love them so much.

Never tried HM before, only 3 saves allowed. For that I really need to learn every encounter inside out and be very efficient. It's frustrating when you manage to do 4 chapters without fail and then one little slip-up and you have to do it all over again. So far I made it to chapter 7, but the section after the solar array is brutal. You get attacked by so many monsters at once it's close to unfair, but with practice it'll get doable I hope.

The Wiki has tons of info on every topic I can think of. That helps a lot and taught me how much better I can still get.

1

u/Voytrekk Aug 31 '21

Psychonauts 2. Decided to play it with game pass and it is once of the best games I've played in a while. Great humor and game play. I'm pretty close to the end, which has felt like the right amount of content for a game before it starts to get stale.

1

u/Violent_Yawn Sep 01 '21

Recently picked up the Mass Effect legendary trilogy on PC. First time I’ve ever played ME. I just want to make it through ME1 because I’ve heard two is fantastic. I’m having fun with ME1 even though it’s age shows but I can definitely understand why it was a huge deal back in 2007.

u/PM_ME_HUGE_CRITS Ryzen 3700x | RTX 3070 Sep 01 '21

Playing the Ascent, looks gorgeous! Have everything maxed cept AA, RT on, DLSS to quality. It stutters a little bit with big explosions but its a small price to pay. Just walking around the world and seeing the detail in all the backgrounds is wonderful. There's so much attention paid to everything.

After that, bring on Diablo 2 Resurrected!

1

u/KingThunderCunt Sep 01 '21

Mostly splitgate right now and I’m having an absolute blast!! Haven’t gotten into ranked yet (I solo q and don’t like using my mic so not sure how far i’d be able to go) but I really love Shotty/Snipers and TDM in the casual mode. It brings back so many good memories of Unreal Tournament and the portals add such an interesting dynamic.

I hop into Apex, CoD BOCW, and Warzone rarely right now. My main secondary games have been Rogue Legacy 2, No Mans Sky, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Mostly Rogue Legacy 2 the last week or so!

If I’m not in the mood

1

u/torrentiaI Sep 01 '21

I was playing Apex Legends and enjoying it very much. It’s a fun and beautiful game visually, with a competitive aspect that gets my heart beating. Then I got sick for about a month (sadge). Since I’ve gotten better though, I found that I acquired a rekindled interest in MMOs, so I’m currently playing and enjoying BDO / Black Desert Online. It’s also a beautiful game, & the combat imo is very nice. I think that I’ll try to balance both games, though I’ll have to put in slightly more time into Apex to get my feel for the game back.

1

u/HaloSlippin Sep 03 '21

Did you get a chance to try the New World beta?

1

u/torrentiaI Sep 03 '21

I didn’t unfortunately ): There is a new one coming up isn’t there?

Just finished Dragon Age Origins Ultimate, shiieett. wtf i waited 10 years to play this masterpiece is beyond me. It has been a blast spending the journey with Morrigan and Alistair throwing insult at each other along the way, they made me chuckles.

Now I am playing Dragon Age II, I am on dragon age marathon.
