SpellForce 3's "Reforced" update is perhaps the largest "patch" in Real Time Strategy history. This is basically a complete redesign. Give the game a shot if you haven't already, or a second chance if you did!

I completely forgot about Spellforce 3. Thanks for the reminder. Up to the steam store

6

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

Have fun!

1

u/anduril38 Dec 08 '21

It's the perfect time to pick it up!

34

u/wamcgyt Dec 08 '21

I was put off by the inadequate description of all the different versions. Are they DLCs, expansions, do they have separate campaigns, are they actually separate games, what makes them different?

58

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

It's confusing because originally they were standalone, completely different games, but they changed how it works now.

  • SpellForce 3: Reforced = base game (Humans, Orcs, Elves and main story)
  • SpellForce 3: Soul Harvest = expansion 1 (Humans, Orcs, Elves, Dark Elves, Dwarves and second campaign)
  • SpellForce 3: Fallen God = expansion 2 (Humans, Orcs, Elves, Trolls and third campaign).
  • All of the above will give you the new game modes, Journey and Arena.
  • SpellForce 3: Versus Edition = free multiplayer, but only with 1 race of your choice to pick - either Humans, Orcs or Elves.
  • PvP Upgrade for Versus (DLC) = unlock all the races for versus

All of these can play together, the different steam games are just unlocks.

10

u/wamcgyt Dec 08 '21

Thanks for the explanation. I will give it another look.

17

u/Zankman Dec 08 '21

This is still confusing. Why is it not all 1 game? What is Reforced?

15

u/Radulno Dec 08 '21

It's one game with expansions but those expansions are also standalone if you want to only play that campaign (they feature different races so you don't get only new content in the expansions)

The multiplayer is sold separately too (and partially F2P) but that's included in the normal game. People shouldn't take this for the multiplayer though, I don't think it's very active

6

u/Farlon273 Dec 08 '21

For the multiplayer part, you can buy races separately but getting the main game and expansions also unlocks them. With the recent update, we got some influx of new players so I think it can slowly grow to be active.

1

u/kostandrea BTW I use Arch Dec 08 '21

It's on Gamepass as well don't know if I should try it though.

Edit: I should also state that I've only played a little bit of the original Spelforce so I know what it's about.

5

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

They originally released as standalone games that didn't work together. Not a fan of that, but the devs did what they could to marry those up now.

The Reforced update remasters the original campaign with the new mechanics, engine features and UI seen in the expansions.

3

u/Vpolne Dec 08 '21

If i'd like to play all 3 campaigns i would need to install all 3 of those, is that correct?

Or are they looking into refining xpacs into some sort of dlc for reforced?

6

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

Yes correct, you'd need to install them all. The core of the game is basically the versus edition, and each game adds some files for their respective campaigns. So you can install/uninstall the campaigns you want to play / are done with as you please.

1

u/Helphaer Dec 09 '21

Can you do that on console too?

1

u/_Nakamura Dec 09 '21

I don't know! Console version is coming out in march, so we'll see.

1

u/Helphaer Dec 09 '21

Well only soul harvest is on gamepass pc so it might not even get played by me for a while. Was hoping for XSX.

4

u/Niedzielan Throughout Heaven And Earth, I Alone Am The Honoured One Dec 08 '21

With the update, all three games use a shared core (technically the Versus Edition), so your first time installing one of the games it downloads the full data necessary, but when installing a second game it only downloads the files needed for that campaign specifically (i.e. very little).

Essentially, you can install any of the three (four including versus) and the others then act like dlc for that game, just with separate library entries. Launching any of them will launch the shared client where you pick what to play.

5

u/Nicholas-Steel Dec 08 '21
  • SpellForce 3: Reforced is Spellforce 3: Remastered. Updated to be of similar quality to the expansions.
  • SpellForce 3: Soul Harvest = stand alone expansion 1
  • SpellForce 3: Fallen God = stand alone expansion 2

1

u/ShadowHedgehogs4274 Dec 08 '21

It's not that confusing, you got:

- The base game, which is now "reforced" aka remastered or vastly improved

- 2 DLCs to add on ( Soul Harvest and Fallen God )

- a free demo of the multiplayer, with the optional upgrade for multiplayer only

1

u/ATCQ_ Dec 08 '21

Are they remastering the DLCs then? Confused about that

1

u/Helphaer Dec 09 '21

So the dlcs were considered better with newer systems while base had all these issues and problems anx was older function. Remastered Base is now different.

2

u/UpdatedMyGerbil Dec 08 '21

So is Journey now the definitive experience to play through the campaigns with a persistent hero, or is it something entirely separate meant for after the campaigns a la Diablo 3's adventure mode?

2

u/Farlon273 Dec 08 '21

It's a separate gamemode with separate maps, it also supports custom player maps!

1

u/UpdatedMyGerbil Dec 08 '21

Sounds interesting, will check it out after the campaigns then. Thanks!

2

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

Think of it more like StarCraft 2's coop!

2

u/UpdatedMyGerbil Dec 08 '21

Thanks for the answer. I haven't played any SC2 coop but I'll look it up.

2

u/DomusCaligari 22d ago

Thank you, this is the first time I've seen it all laid out simply!

-1

u/LawofRa Dec 09 '21 edited Dec 09 '21

Looks like they nickle and dimed their user base to force them to pay for things that should be standard like locked classes for PVP, as well as forcing all previous expansions to unlock "special game modes." Hard pass.

2

u/_Nakamura Dec 09 '21

It's a free update mate. All new game modes are free for owners.

11

u/CiplakIndeed1 Dec 08 '21

Woah for that ridiculously cheap price.

(9.50 USD)

Imma get it.

2

u/Imnewinthisredding Dec 08 '21

Oh Lord, why did my GTX 770 had to die on me.

0

u/martixy Dec 08 '21

Someone said this is only the base game. So uh.... now go buy 4 20$ expansions :D (I'm guessing the price here)

2

u/CiplakIndeed1 Dec 08 '21

Oh mine is the bundle with all expansion for my region pricing.

:D

It’s a shame that I can’t for the life of me get into RTS controls, the writing and voice acting for the trolls in Fallen God was incredible, even just in the first hour or so I saw gameplay for. Props to the devs for sticking with it!

57

u/anduril38 Dec 08 '21

As one of the writers behind Fallen God, you have no idea how much this brightened my day! :)

13

u/Sporeking97 i9-9900K | RTX 3070 Dec 08 '21

For real? Excellent work then homie, the trolls’ dialogue was super interesting to listen to, I loved how they didn’t refer to themselves or others in first person (or at least I think that’s what it was, its been a while since I watched those vids). I just remember that they immediately felt like a genuinely unique culture, and that stuck with me despite never actually playing lol

19

u/anduril38 Dec 08 '21

Yep! Worked at Grimlore for a while. It took a while to work out what we wanted with them. Thank you for liking the game :)

4

u/Trodamus Dec 09 '21

Dude, we’ll done.

1

u/anduril38 Dec 11 '21

Thanks! :)

5

u/xylitol777 Dec 08 '21

I kinda wish there would be comparison screenshots of the different UI elements and such. I can't be bothered installing the game just to see what it looks like now.

3

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

Could just watch some twitch streams!

1

u/ChrisKolumb Dec 08 '21

Or you could just provide some comparisons in your post.

5

u/xylitol777 Dec 08 '21

Both are valid points but I do prefer the screenshots.

6

u/Contast11 Dec 08 '21

I just got the entire franchise. Best decision I've made in awhile!

1

u/anduril38 Dec 08 '21

Hope you enjoy! :)

5

u/Faps_Into_Socks Dec 08 '21

Might have to give it a second chance. I loved the spell force 2 games, but for some reason 3 just didn't click.

2

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

Not gonna lie, I bounced off of the game in 2017 myself. The expansions turned that around and now the base game is just as good.

8

u/gumpythegreat Dec 08 '21

Is the combat still "cycle through your heroes constantly spamming the damage abilities"? If so I have no interest

7

u/eggyisnoone Dec 08 '21

Nope. They changed that. Now you can use skills without cycling.

But hmm, iirc you dont need to cycle hero to use skills on legacy, you can keybind their spells on qwer

2

u/gumpythegreat Dec 08 '21

Right, I think I didn't have to cycle when I played now that I think about it

I still felt it was too spammy

3

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

Heroes are still strong, but units play a significantly greater role in this iteration of the game, especially on the high difficulties.

3

u/RiskOfRains Dec 08 '21

What kind of game is this? Is it a standard RTS?

13

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

Think more or less warcraft 3 with the hero focus, but the army size of starcraft, and economic complexity of age of empires.

5

u/ShadowHedgehogs4274 Dec 08 '21

It's an interesting hybrid between an RTS and RPG. IMO it does neither phenomenally, but the mix is very unique to me and is just good enough to be fun. However, I find the story to be very intriguing and the voice acting is top notch. I've been playing co-op with my SO and it's been a really fun time

4

u/Farlon273 Dec 08 '21

RTS&RPG hybrid

2

u/DaBombDiggidy Dec 08 '21

It's more of a divinity game with RTS sections. Not a ton of them either, thought it was a fun change of pace when I played it tbh.

3

u/DrMoneroStrange Dec 08 '21

Is this active on the game pass version?

1

u/CReaper210 GTX 980 | i7 4790k @ 4.4GHz Dec 08 '21

The game pass version is only Soul Harvest(expansion 1 of the game). It doesn't even have the original campaign, so this update doesn't apply to it.

3

u/sircallsoutalot Dec 09 '21

I love the game and was waiting for this to come out, but is it just me or does the skirmish very hard AI cheat like crazy in Fallen Gods? No matter how solid my build order, how fast I expand, I just get overwhelmed in numbers when I play like humans vs orcs for example.

2

u/_Nakamura Dec 09 '21

Yeah, very hard and insane AIs cheat quite a bit. If you can beat very hard it's probably time for competitive multiplayer instead for a better experience.

3

u/Greeve78 Dec 09 '21

Can someone describe multiplayer to me? Are the characters you make tied to a game save or is it like a Diablo style system where you create character and can use that character to join MP games ? Does this question even make sense? I hope so. Thank you in advance.

1

u/_Nakamura Dec 09 '21

You can only do hat with Journey mode's multiplayer. The normal (ranked) multiplayer has pre-set heroes like Warcraft 3.

6

u/FreeStyleHorror Dec 08 '21

Whit the new update the game is awsome I recommend it 👌 and the new modes are giving me a lot of fun and replayability 😀 😃 🙂 🙃 😊

2

u/Deathroll1988 Dec 08 '21

So what exactly is different now?

8

u/Farlon273 Dec 08 '21

- Main campaign is brought up to the standards of Fallen God (legacy branch available.)
- 2 new free game modes for anyone that bought either the main game or at least one expansion. Mod support for them included.
- Finally crossplay between expansions.
- Some small QoL changes here and there.
- Probably more that I don't know of.

2

u/Deathroll1988 Dec 08 '21

Oh thanks a lot.

1

u/mkeller25 Dec 08 '21

if i want to play a campaign using the fallen god standards... do i launch reforced then?

2

u/Tertullianitis Dec 08 '21

How is the difficulty?

2

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

Well there are 4 settings, it's as you'd expect. Walkover on the low levels and challenging on the high ones.

2

u/Magitex Dec 08 '21

They added the freeplay mode from the original Spellforce? and it works in coop?! Color me impressed, I really enjoyed this mode in the original, great to see its return!

2

u/mkraven Dec 08 '21

Cool. I really liked the original version of the game, sounds like they made it play a lot more like the new expansions which, iirc, has been a long time coming. Neat, might consider trying it out again at some point.

2

u/n0f00d DRM-free gaming FTW! Dec 08 '21

SpellForce 3 Reforged

A proper reforge. You should take lessons from this, Blizz!

3

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

STILL waiting for that Warcraft 3 update, RIP.

2

u/DingoLingo_ Dec 08 '21

I first heard about it yesterday and played 5 hours of it. It's fun, but it can feel overwhelming because unlike most RTS games where you can pause to gather yourself, you can't in this game. There was one part of the game where the games' quests were trying to teach me to build a barracks before one could go ahead and destroy the enemy base, but I kept getting raided constantly that I couldn't find the time to go into the menu to increase my characters' stat attributes after a level up because that menu doesn't pause either. I ended up having to reload a save, get to a point where I destroyed the enemy base, and then turn in the tutorial quest

1

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

That's true, it can feel hectic to manage 4 heroes while also playing an RTS. There is a pause for casting spells, but not what you're suggesting unfortunately.

2

u/komesubr Dec 08 '21

Do I need 1 and 2 if I buy for the campaign story?

1

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

Nah, the entirety of SF 3 is a prequel to 1 and 2.

1

u/Obba_40 Dec 08 '21

A prequel? Im playing spellforce 1 right now. Im at the dwarves map

2

u/Houderebaese Dec 08 '21

Hmm let’s see if I own this already

2

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '21

[deleted]

2

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

All of it together is hundreds of hours of content. I'd say it's a no brainer when on sale.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '21

[deleted]

2

u/_Nakamura Dec 09 '21

You could ignore optional missions and exploration and drastically cut down on that.

2

u/mattwinkler007 Dec 08 '21

Huh I'm a huge fan of the Ages and the 'Crafts, never heard of this but it looks great. Hopefully not too hero spammy but I'll give it a try!

2

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

If you're referring to competitive, you're limited to 1 hero there (can get 2 in customs if you turn that on) - a better army still wins most of the time.

2

u/Obba_40 Dec 08 '21

Im still in spellforce 1 lol

2

u/cugabuh Dec 09 '21

What a good deal. I may snag this and play it on Steam Deck next year.

Thanks for the heads up!

2

u/Decado7 Dec 09 '21

One thing interesting about this - Spellforce 3 was the original game, then had two seperate DLCs. Each of those DLC's built upon the game, but werent accessible in the original game. Each DLC had substantial UI upgrades, extra features put in, but each played like a completely new stand alone game, despite being DLC.

This re-launch incorporates those upgrades into the original game (3rd in the overall series) which is fantastic.

The free multiplayer version of the game is definitely worth checking out if you're interested too - the game has a surprisingly good RTS element. The main campaign has a precise combination of RTS mixed with Divinity Sin style RPG.

2

u/aaronth07 i7-7700k, 1070 Ti, 16GB DDR4 Dec 09 '21

Without spoilers, what are some of the major changes?

3

u/_Nakamura Dec 09 '21

The old game had very different mechanics - carriages would move your resources between sectors, making for a very sluggish economy. Now resources dropped to a sector center goes directly to your global bank.

Iron smelting was removed.

Carrier worker management was removed.

The races are heavily reworked for more asymmetry, way too many changes to list. Your basic units are far more solid, though.

The UI is super heavily reworked for a more modern RTS experience.

Damage types are simplified so that there's only 4 types - strike, pierce, magic and siege (removing blunt, thrust, and the fire, ice, light, black types).

The maps from the expansions have significantly improved visibility with less vegetation.

Engine improvements mean slightly better visuals, much better performance and much better load times.

Multiplayer now has a ranked mode.

So much happened since vanilla, I'm having serious trouble listing the important bits. You best see for yourself!

2

u/tanhorn Dec 09 '21

2 days ago bought it, one of my favourite

1

u/Strider2126 Dec 08 '21

Complete redesign? What do you mean?

4

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

That is for the base game's campaign. It's now using the races, game mechanics and UI seen in the expansions, overall modernizing everything and making it a smoother experience on both the RPG and RTS side.

1

u/Strider2126 Dec 08 '21

Is there any video where can i see how the game works?

2

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

NerdRageFred is currently streaming the Fallen God campaign!
For MP, check out Indrid's recent cast.

1

u/elerak Dec 08 '21

I bounced off this hard with the controls. Shame too, i loved the earlier games back when.

1

u/Reidlos650 Dec 08 '21

Does the update effect the soul harvest dlc

1

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

In some ways. Soul Harvest players didn't get ranked matchmaking before.

Also performance is better, and the factions got a bunch of changes. The biggest being that there is no iron smelting anymore.

1

u/Iclud_Yogurt Dec 08 '21

Is it me or is there no longer a way to resize the UI?

2

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

Unfortunately yes. That's one of the things that was lost with the new UI system. Hopefully they'll look at implementing something for this.

1

u/Farlon273 Dec 09 '21

They reimplemented it!

1

u/Fexxzz Dec 08 '21

Hmm, so now there is Spellforce 3: Reforced. I own the PvP Edition. I assume I still get the PvP related changes?

1

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

Yeah, you still get the new map etc.

1

u/supercow_ Dec 08 '21

I bought SpellForce 3 back when it came out but never got around to playing it. Is Reforced a new thing I have to buy or is this a free upgrade/overhaul?

2

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

It's a free update!

1

u/supercow_ Dec 08 '21

Nice!! Thanks for the reply.

1

u/mfdurandal Dec 08 '21

I’m curious about this game but I’m not good with rts. Is beginner friendly? Is like a fusion between divinity and age of empires?

1

u/Farlon273 Dec 09 '21

It can look overwhelming but there are lots of guides and helpful veterans

1

u/Helphaer Dec 09 '21

The real question remains if it's still in need of help or not.

1

u/_Nakamura Dec 09 '21

In my opinion it needs help with regards to multiplayer servers. Anything else is quality of life at this point.

1

u/Nhorin 23d ago

I love how they have Geralt of Rivia in the campaign ;D

8

u/TomasdeVasconcellos Dec 08 '21

In the world we live in, any developer that goes this far has my respect. Will buy the game. Thanks for sharing this.

4

u/_Nakamura Dec 08 '21

100%. That's why I'm here sharing this. Mad respect for the hard work - they could have just abandoned it to start a new project.
