It's either going to be a terrible janky mess, or an amazing janky mess. I have no idea what way it's going to go since it's been so long since CoP, but I have hope.

u/419chris419 Dec 08 '21

I just hope it's friendly to modders

u/Venom_is_an_ace . Dec 08 '21

They said that modding is important to them and that it will be moddable on release.

should be interesting since it is using UE5

u/419chris419 Dec 08 '21

Fingers crossed. Developers say a lot of things these days, I'll believe it when I see it.

From what I can tell, UE4 based games have not been friendly to modders. I doubt UE5 will be any different.

21

u/Strider2126 Dec 08 '21

Mordhau developers with the SDK had a really hard time making ONLY the certification from epic. Imagine the rest.

2

u/Diridibindy Dec 09 '21

Well, mordhau ain't the biggest client.

Unreal Engine is pretty friendly, as long as they release their SDK. Some games have encrypted files and this can cause issues for modders. Squad for instance, released their editor and there is a ton of modding potential with it and people have been using it fine for the most part, I was able to build a destructible city map for squad, never released it as the netcode didn't really support it well, but was a cool experiment. UE will be great for stalker if you ask me, as it's nowhere near as temperamental as their engine for the first 3 games.

Well the engine was made with RT in mind, hence the name XRay engine with limited RT running on a CPU core.

Guess what CPUs didnt have more than 2-4 cores then and that fell really flat. So that got canned. They also had to deal with 4GB limits of 32bit applications and most crahses and volatility happens when you close in on 4GB system usage which the game doesnt expect to exceed.

COP complete has a pretty decent fix managed to play the game twice with 0 crahses

It's using a engine that hasn't even gotten released on any other games. There won't be any real modding. And the reason stalker has such crazy mods is all the source code etc was leaked a while back.

The trailer is magnificent, but I'm being cautiously optimistic as every fiber of my being is telling me that I'm daydreaming if I even dare to think that the game would be properly optimized or that it could look anything as good as it does in the trailer.

11

u/feedseed664 Dec 08 '21

That trailer is a render

u/PixelBlaster AMD 2700x - RX 5700 XT Dec 09 '21

Shut up and let me have my wishful thinking damnit.

1

u/OSRS_Satriani Dec 08 '21

I'm just happy it's going to be on gamepass. Good or terrible, I'll be able to play it for very cheap at launch.

1

u/tarangk Dec 09 '21

They are going to use UE5, so its not like their in-house engine like it was for the original trilogy. X-ray engine offered a lot, but along with offered a lot of bugs/glitches too.

u/MKULTRATV Dec 08 '21

Teasing a teaser. Fuckin 'ell

u/ZeldaMaster32 R9 5900X | RTX 3080Ti | 16GB Dec 08 '21

Man I hope this is good. A ton of it hangs on whether they can recreate the feeling of the AI in the original games

19

u/419chris419 Dec 08 '21

Yeah I hope they don't screw up on the AI and the ambient sounds. Those two was what made stalker special to me.

20

u/RuinTrajectory Dec 08 '21

This and Elden Ring are the 2 games I have any real sense of excitement for coming out next year. Been playing the Anomaly mod recently in anticipation, which is an incredible mod btw. Highly recommend for any fans of the series who haven't played it.

9

u/Ziomkowsky Dec 08 '21

Just keep in mind that stalker 2 will be a sequel to the original trilogy, not Anomaly. Just a friendly reminder to save you from a potential disappointment when a lot of the features from anomaly will be missing.

4

u/survivl Dec 08 '21

Yes but if modding is good then maybe we can get anomaly 2

7

u/419chris419 Dec 09 '21

Maybe in another 8 years after release of stalker 2

3

u/KaiBetterThanTyson Dec 08 '21

Yeah same for me along with Dying Light 2.

1

u/new_nimmerzz Dec 09 '21

Just curious, did you play Dark Souls? Did you like those? I’ve been trying to get a sense of what Elden Ring is going to be like and most people say a grander Dark Souls.

2

u/RuinTrajectory Dec 09 '21

Yes, the Souls series is my favorite game franchise of the last decade. Elden Ring will largely be an expansion of that gameplay formula but with more variety in the form of stealth, mounted combat, and an actual jump button. My impression from the network test footage I've seen is that it will still have the sort of difficulty fromsoft is known for, but generally have more mass appeal due to the freedom of movement and greater emphasis on exploration.

1

u/new_nimmerzz Dec 09 '21

Thanks for the insight. Really looks like it’s gonna be great. I never buy EA or at launch anymore but I’ll be keeping a close eye on reviews for this.

1

u/presty60 Dec 09 '21

Yeah from what Ive heard, it's a pretty big expansion of the Dark Souls formula, but it's still a souls game, so if you don't like Dark Souls you probably won't love Elden Ring.

Reminds me of the golden sphere artifact from Roadside Picnic, the soviet book the Stalker movie and games are originally based on. https://stalker.fandom.com/wiki/Roadside_Picnic

4

u/smellsLikeCamembert Dec 09 '21

I hope they have a very robust version of A-life. That was one of the core pillars of the originals. It brought the levels to life.

8

u/nergoponte Dec 08 '21

I love me some visual teasing

3

u/bitbot i7 9700k / RTX2070 / 32GB Dec 09 '21

Hope the Russian invasion of Ukraine won't delay the game.

4

u/Platypuslord Dec 08 '21

News that there will be news is not news.

-1

u/micheal213 Dec 08 '21

So is stalker basically like a single player Tarkov type game or something. What exactly is it.

15

u/Ulti Dec 08 '21

Ehh... only vaguely. Stalker is a sci-fi/horror game set similarly to Tarkov, but it's not meant to be a PvP affair like Tarkov is. It might scratch a similar sort of itch in terms of aesthetics. You're shooting weird mutants and dodging gravitational and electrical anomalies just as often as you are avoiding being shot by humans. Unless you really like Tarkov mainly for the run down eastern European aesthetic, Stalker probably isn't going to do it for you. But there's definitely a non-zero amount of overlap in the fanbases!

10

u/survivl Dec 08 '21

FYI the guy that created the Stalker movie in 1979 was Andrei Tarkovsky

1

u/Ulti Dec 08 '21

Oh, that's a fun nod I'd never noticed! I do believe there's some developer overlap between the two as well, and from what I understand, a few neat Stalker easter eggs in Tarkov. I've been eyeing it from a distance since its launch, and it seems pretty good now, but I just am not really in the mood for a high-stakes game like that these days. Several of my friends are very into it though!

6

u/survivl Dec 08 '21

Not really into EFT myself, it has too many core problems like very bad desync, invisible players, broken recoil, etc.

1

u/Infrah . Dec 09 '21

Try the single player offline mod (also supports weapon overhaul mods, AI adjustment mods, fun stuff) - r/EmuTarkov

2

u/Diridibindy Dec 09 '21

Also one little detail. Tarkov is set in the universe (and the general location) of a very popular 2013-16 era browser online shooter hosted on VK (the largest Russian social network).

3

u/micheal213 Dec 08 '21

Oh no the aesthetic of the game really look amazing to me and I love the background of the game and that it’s got monsters and whatnot. I never played the original but I’d seen videos but mostly of some pvp mod lol.

Seems like a Tarkov meets metro esq style of game with the aesthetics but with the single player aspect of it. Seems really fun, just don’t know yet what like the goal is if it’s story based or exploration based

1

u/Ulti Dec 08 '21

Ohhh I gotcha, I gotcha. Yeah no it's a lot closer to Metro than Tarkov, for sure. They're definitely exploration/story-focused games, but not nearly railroaded to the degree of Metro. Much more solitary experiences, and in much more open environments (most of the time). Metro Exodus felt pretty Stalker to me most of the time on Ranger Hardcore. Ranger difficulty in general basically tunes the Metro games to use Stalker's damage scaling. So if you've tried that, it will give you a good idea of what to expect.

1

u/Platypuslord Dec 15 '21

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl is $6 on GOG and either play vanilla or download this mod.

All 3 of the existing Stalker games are ambitious and janky but modders have gone in and made all of them a much better experince. This highly rated mod doesn't mess with the story or gameplay and mainly makes it prettier and less buggy.

3

u/survivl Dec 08 '21

It's based on a soviet book and movie. Coincidentally the guy who made the movie Stalker was Andrei Tarkovsky. The original soviet book is called Roadside Picnic, it basically inspired the survivor shooter genre https://stalker.fandom.com/wiki/Roadside_Picnic

1

u/saitilkE Win/Debian, i5-7500, 16Gb, GTX 1060 Dec 09 '21

The game doesn't have much in common with the book or movie though except for the main idea of there being an anomaly zone with strange artifacts in it. It's not based on the book, just inspired by it.

u/XXLpeanuts i9 9900k 5ghz, Nvidia 3090 FE, 32gb 3600 DDR4 Ram, Samsung G9 Dec 09 '21

Lol when people only understand gaming through the scope of tarkov.

1

u/TyroneLA Dec 09 '21

Unreal Engine... brace yourselves fans!

1

u/BzlOM Dec 09 '21

I still don't fully believe it's coming out - so not getting excited until it's actually released.

"Stalker 2: Get ready to fall through the floor....again."

14

u/survivl Dec 08 '21

I probably have 300 hours in all 3 stalker games and anomaly and never experienced that.
