TL;DR: Base game has to be re-downloaded, but will result in ~34GB less disc space used, faster loading screen times, improved world data streaming, and overall runtime performance.

Hopefully also includes the Alder Lake fix, still haven't finished the game and can't even start it now with my new CPU.

Also there's supposedly a 40 hour expansion coming in March which will probably bump the game size back up again.

Wait what? isn't that game over a year old? And they're adding a huge new expansion? Nice.

Haven't purchased it as I'm waiting on a ultimate version with all the DLC. Seems I'm going to be left waiting.

Doesnt matter if its a threat or not, its getting treated like one so its still a bitch.

Like another year if masking up is a bitch

I heard the last DLC for Valhalla releases in March, Ill probably wait until then as well.

2

u/everettescott Dec 08 '21

They had announced within months after it came out they were hoping to support it for at least two years with content.

3

u/Pittaandchicken Dec 09 '21

Oh nice. That is certainly generous for a single player game.

Then again I presume they realised their pace of one every year ( recently with a year gap in between after every two ) wasn't realistic if they wanted their games to be good πŸ˜…

1

u/Nicholas-Steel Dec 09 '21

Interestingly they've very recently announced a 4th year of major DLC for their Anno 1800 game as well.

It doesnt seem they want their games to be any good sadly.

I just bought a subscription to the Ubisoft plus thing. 15 bucks and I played all the Ubi games I wanted to within a month, unsubscribed and that was it.

1

u/Pittaandchicken Dec 10 '21

You must have one hell of an open world fatigue right now. Wouldn't be surprised if you never touched another one for a year or so πŸ˜…

1

u/electropop3695 Dec 10 '21

Nah, it wasn't all of them. Just Valhalla, farcry 6, riders republic, and a couple of the Anno games.

1

u/martixy Dec 10 '21

Wow, has the concept of expansions already been lost to the younger generation of gamers?

11

u/drugusingthrowaway Dec 08 '21

will result in ~34GB less disc space used

I wish Microsoft would do this with some of their games. I'd love to put AOE4 on my SSD but they insist on making me keep all 8 languages of HD video files. Can't delete them because they're Game Pass files. But I know I don't need them because the pirated version of the game is 30GB installed instead of their 80GB.

7

u/Rinkeli Dec 08 '21

My AOE4 install from Game Pass is only 35GB. You sure you haven't somehow opted into downloading extra languages and stuff?

4

u/drugusingthrowaway Dec 08 '21

I wouldn't even know how. I am Canadian, maybe that forces it? I never saw an option. But they're there and mine is 80GB: https://i.imgur.com/jEYpIhZ.png

I don't think those file sizes are accurate, look at what it says for the size in the Apps section of settings.

Like my WindowsApps folder is supposedly ~620GB according to Explorer, but I have only 667GB used on this drive total, which includes over 340GB of games from Steam and other stores alone. So clearly the numbers don't add up.

4

u/Nicholas-Steel Dec 09 '21

Due to file/folder permissions to keep you out of Windows Store apps/stop you installing mods there will be a discrepency in file size as your user account doesn't have permission to fully assess the contents on the storage device.

One of the reasons I wait at least a year to play games. So I can play them in their best state. I think it's time for me to finally buy this game.

3

u/kopkiwi Dec 09 '21

Yeah, only just picked up the game last week. Ultimate Mega Gold Super edition for only $70(NZD) down from $200, for the metric shit tonne of content seems good in my eyes.

7

u/CeolSilver Dec 08 '21

44GB of disc space saved on XSX but only 13GB saved on PS5. I really wonder what on earth is going on there

Whatever data compression system used isn’t PS compatible. Division 2 was the same way; game was double the size of the Xbox version on PS4

1

u/fuelter Dec 08 '21

PS5 has better data compression to begin with.

27

u/OnkelJupp Dec 08 '21

Lol, what a feisty title. The game is getting much smaller after this update, which is very nice to see.

11

u/Edgaras1103 Dec 08 '21

Nice, just implement dlss and we are golden

u/ZeldaMaster32 R9 5900X | RTX 3080Ti | 16GB Dec 09 '21

Ubisoft's built in TAA upsampling is quite good, you might not be able to tell the difference between 90% and 100% res. Not better than DLSS but much better than more basic techniques like FSR, give it a go

1

u/Edgaras1103 Dec 09 '21

I just want more fps. Atm I'm playing at 70% of 4k to get 60 FPS

1

u/ZeldaMaster32 R9 5900X | RTX 3080Ti | 16GB Dec 09 '21

Yeah DLSS would help a good bit with that, even performance mode rendering 1080p looks awesome with a 4K output

10

u/Havok7x Dec 08 '21

My assumption is they are removing all the duplicated data that's was needed to run off the slow HDDs in the previous consoles. Pretty nice to see honestly.

25

u/SpookyBread1 Dec 08 '21

If that was the case it wouldn't also be happening on last gen consoles

5

u/Nicholas-Steel Dec 09 '21

They might be using some database data storage method like Grinding Gear Games is with their Path of Exile game.

In v3.15 or 3.16 GGG added support for major updates to trigger a scan of the main data archive, checking for files that aren't referenced in the database and deleting the redundant files while also scanning the database for references to files that no longer exist and deleting those references from the database. Speeding up loading (smaller database for the CPU to interact with) and reducing total storage size of the game.

Previously people had developed & used 3rd party tools to do this task for Path of Exile.

4

u/roombaonfire Dec 08 '21

Okay but is the game audio quality still unbearably bad?

3

u/ZeldaMaster32 R9 5900X | RTX 3080Ti | 16GB Dec 09 '21

This actually annoys the hell out of me and I feel like even the average person would notice it

1

u/YPM1 Dec 09 '21

I'm pretty average and I stopped playing 20 mins in because of it.

u/PcChip 9900k @ 5Ghz / RTX 3090 / 16GB DDR4-4000 CL17/ 960 EVO nvme Dec 10 '21

it's even worse with audiophile gear, I cannot fathom how this made it through QA or who even approved of this happening

2

u/XXLpeanuts i9 9900k 5ghz, Nvidia 3090 FE, 32gb 3600 DDR4 Ram, Samsung G9 Dec 09 '21

If anything I bet it gets worse with this update.

2

u/LopsidedIdeal Dec 08 '21

Wow, what a good idea.

I'm like 90% through the main story in this game and I keep having to stop playing because of bugs that get introduced with every update. Ubisoft please stop trying to make this into a pseudo-live-service game and just let me finish it lol.

1

u/sharingmyxp Dec 09 '21

At least you probably avoided the drunk Eivor bug lol

2

u/Satan_Prometheus R5 5600X, 2070 Super, 16GB DDR4-3600, Asrock X570M Pro4, WDSN750 Dec 09 '21

Hah I wish, but no, I had that one. I got this game on launch so I've had all the bugs you could possibly have.

3

u/Spideyrj Dec 08 '21

after having to reinstall cod warzone........there goes my internet data cap

9

u/wicked_chew Dec 08 '21

Shit, data caps sound like a nightmare... What isp do you have?

3

u/Spideyrj Dec 09 '21

its a brazilian telecom, i doubt you heard of i. Claro.

my neighbourhood was considered a low area, so for the first 4 years i got it, they never actually metered my usage.....but last year because more people started to get it, they started monitoring :(.....its only 400gb.

So before they did it, i bought 2 hard drives and started downloading most of my steam games :P .

wich made it worse because its more games asking updates now lol

2

u/wicked_chew Dec 09 '21

No i havent heard of that but damn... I appreciate the info wow thats rough.. Good luck out there salutes

2

u/rapozaum i7 8700 2080S HOF 16GB RAM 2666mhz Dec 09 '21

Weird. I use Claro and every single month I explode the data cap and nothing happens.
While they state it when you sign up for them, it has never been enforced. I've been a Claro client since at least 2013.

1

u/Nicholas-Steel Dec 09 '21

luckily you can set them to only update when you go to play them... unluckily that means you won't be guaranteed to be able to immediately play your games.

1

u/lexsanders Dec 08 '21

This sounds awesome. On the way to utilizing next gen storage.

1

u/En1ightenment https://steamcommunity.com/id/en1ightenment Dec 09 '21

same thing happened with R6S before, a Ubisoft game, took the size from ~85GB to 45GB

1

u/Thoth_gg Dec 09 '21

I'm literally in the process of downloading this game as I type. Guess I might as well delete it
