The problem with social media (and I'm guilty of it too) is that it gives people a sense of participating in solutions to problems just by posting. It's not useless but it isn't actual praxis.

Performative virtue signaling

250

u/ThreadbareHalo May 28 '22 Silver Gold Helpful Starstruck

I think the opposite is more interesting. Shaming people into NOT talking about virtuous things. The consequence of that is perhaps more interesting because being vocal about moralistic things has been around forever… shaming not just certain people but the idea of discussing virtuous things in general hasn’t though.

I’m not sure it’s been the positive force for good people who throw the word “virtue signaling” around seem to think it is. Seems like it’s resulted in a bunch of jaded people who want to force other people to be as potentially inactive and involved as they are out of a belief in not wanting anyone thinking they’re better than them.

u/wintersdark May 28 '22

Virtue is hard. Virtue signaling is easy.

People think the protests of old are the same as those today, or they think that's all those protestors did.

51

u/ThreadbareHalo May 28 '22 edited May 28 '22

I mean calling out virtue signaling is super easy too. That’s kinda the thing. Talking about virtue might encourage someone else to actually do something about it. Telling everyone they’re an asshole for discussing objectively virtuous things though? Seems just to have a chilling effect on virtue in general. Seems ultimately more helpful to the assholes of the world than increasing the amount of virtue. All because people don’t like the idea of SOME people thinking they’re better than other people. I’m not sure the tradeoff there is quite worth it given how much it ends up helping folks precisely like the NRA.

It’s kinda silly to think that protestors of old wouldn’t have been massively interested in being able to send a message to millions of people around the world instantaneously. Just because they made their protest supplies with cardboard and marker and stood in potentially dangerous places doesn’t mean they wouldn’t have preferred to be able to make statements with pictures in safety. Seems kinda ridiculous when you think about it, assuming if you took a protester from 40 years back and gave them the option to make statements in safety to everyone in the world that they wouldn’t have taken the option in a heartbeat… it’s kinda a boomer-y “everything was better a long time ago” perspective.

Whatever national tragedy redditors can use to draw attention to themselves and virtue signal over, they will do. It was really bad last summer with all the BLM protests going on, tons of white savior redditors scrolling the letters "BLM" on their car or house and posting here trying to demonstrate just how great of a person they are.

The most ridiculous one that I saw was some white dude had painted the letters BLM on his roof. The picture was of him standing on his roof next to it jaw clenched with his best serious stare looking off into the distance.

10

It won't but if no one knows that their views are shared with millions of other people then how do we get the motivation to do the actual fixing?

It's like companies telling you "don't share your salaries!" because they don't want you collectively noticing who is paid more or less. So posting your salary informs other people. "oh! im being paid too little!" And so they can start doing the fixing.

Sharing publicly that you hate the NRA gets other people realizing "you know I hate the NRA too!" then knowing you have a lot of numbers can get you to actually protest, vote and influence politics.

Propaganda and public visibility of sentiments/positions IS important.

We had the same AR15 50 years ago and didn’t have this issue. It’s definitely both. Until people have hope, and aren’t miserable, poor, hopeless or in some cases just pieces of shit- this won’t end. (I’m not saying it’s poor people, but people with no hope because of being priced out of literally everything meaningful like housing, food, clothing, etc. usually aren’t well - to be clear - I’m blaming the system/gov)

Canadian gun owner here.

Some of the laws here are nonsensical. For example suppressors are illegal. They don’t make guns silent, but they do protect your hearing significantly.

Your allowed to go fire a .50 bmg (well you could before 2020) or any other rifle in the forest. But if you take a .22 Olympic target pistol into the forest your breaking the law.

And another hilarious one is center fire rifles can only have a maximum of 5 rounds. But if you own a rim fire rifle you can get a drum magazine with 100 rounds.

We recently had a very large gun ban as the result of a mass shooting.

The stupid thing is, the mass shooter killed a cop and stole their uniform, gun and squad car. Then went on a shooting spree disguised as a cop.

It took 19 hours to stop them.

I would really like to understand the logic of how a gun ban would stop something like this from happening.

I’d also like to know how a gun ban would stop any gun violence from happening here.

The majority of firearm violence here is gang related. Gangsters aren’t walking into gun shops and buying guns over the counter. They are getting tiny concealed carry handguns smuggled from the US (because compact handguns are illegal here).

Our firearm licensing process here is very time consuming and comprehensive. It makes no sense. But every year our gun laws get stricter. And gun violence doesn’t get any better 🤷‍♂️.

6

u/fusreedah May 28 '22

I think gun control WAS -- not is -- a very sensible idea. But then when its put into practice, it clearly doesnt work. The places with the strictest gun laws in the US also have the worst gun violence. You need to have humility and accept when your ideas havent worked rather than just doubling down.

→ More replies

23

u/sydneydanger May 28 '22

This is what people should be paying attention to. Most people like to shout “gun control” but wouldn’t know the difference between a shotgun and a rifle if you handed them one of each. They just see “gun bad”.

None of those Canadian laws really make sense. The important takeaway is also that none of them have prevented gun crimes. Punishing law abiding citizens in order to prevent criminals is like trying to bail a sinking boat with a pasta strainer.

6

u/TommyPinkYolk May 28 '22

Yeah - I have no clue how to stop these shootings. It's an unfortunate consequence of the freedom to access firearms and mentally ill individuals.

I do think it's astounding in two years we've gone from defund the cops ---- delete all the guns ---- omg why didn't the cops do their job and rush in. That part is hard to digest.

All in all these shootings are absolute tragedies. But if we delete all of the guns and these mass killings continue through other lethal means - that would be the real tragedy.

Side note - aren't sawed off shotguns legal in Canada without any extra government pleasing ?

Your values do not necessarily align with the NRA, just like BLM supporters across America did not support the fraudulent non-profit BLM foundation that wasted millions.

It’s okay to hate the NRA and be pro-2nd amendment. I’m one of the “easier to get a gun than drivers license is insanity” but Don’t let them fool you into thinking it’s the same (just like they tried to make Conservatives feel they weren’t conservative enough if they didn’t follow Trump 100%).

To believe we have the answers now, after they admitted to faulty info over the past day, is just ignorant. Just wait another week and we’ll really see it

u/delirio91 May 27 '22

Thank God, I was too scared to do it myself for fear of not getting likes.

12

u/CheapChallenge May 28 '22

I'm a gun owner and supporters of more people owning and being trained in its usage.

The NRA is a traitorous lobbyist group used to cause dissension and conflict for their own profit.

6

u/darbster29 May 28 '22

How many mass shooters were NRA members?

17

u/KaiserWilhel May 28 '22

Wow how fucking brave, you took a picture to post on Reddit for karma, you probably just saw the opportunity to get free points and technically make a stand without doing anything, didn’t you.

64

u/ConProofInc May 27 '22

Your blaming the NRA over what? A freak with a gun ? Grow up.

Ok, I'll bite. Whats your beef with the NRA? Do you hate guns, or NRA politics, or something else entirely?

If that kid in Texas drove his truck into the kids would you flip ford the finger? We have a mental health crisis that people are afraid to address for fear of offending people.

7

u/aliengerm1 May 28 '22

We got BOTH.

LOTS Of countries have mental health problems, but USA is the only country in the world with a mass shooting problem too.

Regulate guns like you do alcohol and drivers licenses, that's all I ask.

7

u/Blitzkrieg762 May 28 '22

... we do... ID, Background check, minimum age to buy? Jesus Christ, some of you people...

Bold statement, but do tell me one just one name of an NRA member that has been behind the trigger of any mass shooting,

u/apextek May 28 '22

4000 civilians were killed in ukraine by psycho russian teenage soldiers, and we sent them 80 billion dollars in guns and weapons to solve the problem.

Here we take away legal citizens ability to defend against attacks while criminals will always find a way.

9/11 was committed with boxcutters, oklahoma city bombings were done with fertilizer, boston bombing's were done with pressure cookers, Jim Jones killed 900 people with kool aid.

We don't have a gun problem, we have a mental health , a radicalization, and an insurgency problem, and our solution is to push the age of responsibility older.

And as we push the age of responsibility older, society responded by taking longer to mature.

Now we have 40 years old acting like 22 years olds where 60 years ago, the average 18 year old was self sufficient.

And we avoid dealing with the insurgency head on because its inside our borders instead of in afghanistan, iraq, or ukraine.

In Israel they have an insurgency issue and every person must serve in the military and every one is trained in weapons. If Russian and China actually ever tried to take the US they only wait for the day when the common man isn't armed, and forgot how to fight.

These kids they didn't wake up one day evil. someone or some ideology radicalized them. go after the radicalizer and protect schools the same way you protect police stations and court houses.

Same reason you don't see these kids attacking those places. THose place have armed guards. THese are people that have been radicalized with the purpose of destabilizing society and effecting safety and security for a host of reason. After 9/11 they talked about this thing happening but people thought it would be in the weeks and days ahead not the following years and decades and not by people living here. But that is the way terror works, by affecting the lowest hanging fruit.

While I'm at it there is a fight for control of your thought called psyops and the same people that will kill thousands of foreign combattants don't think twice about locking down or killing a few domestics to further their control agenda.

4

u/wingsnut25 May 28 '22

501(c)(4)s are allowed to lobby. 501(c)(3) are not. The NRA has both

Well to be fair most pro gun people hate the NRA due to the fact they haven’t done shit to protect rights for years and mostly care about lining their pockets

A lot of people in the gun community don't like NRA; condemning them doesn't mean you're anti gun.

Lots of money donated by organizations for gun control.

https://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/everytown-for-gun-safety/summary?id=D000067401

https://wamu.org/story/20/10/22/everytown-moms-demand-2020-elections-spending-nra-north-carolina/

Of course both sides spend money to get people to pass legislation that they support. The big thing is that no one cares when it supports their point of view and only care when it opposes their view.
