I've done it a lot it 100% is. Items getting lost is common af or gets in limbo for months.

1

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat May 28 '22

Sometimes it's sacred.

1

u/cabramattaa May 28 '22

Scared of the Spanish

1

u/mynameistoocommonman 29d ago

Really depends on where you are and where you're shipping to. I've shipped from Germany to Italy with no issues whatsoever, and I've ordered from Austria, France, Spain, etc. with no issues as well. But that's all within the EU, and I imagine it might be more problematic elsewhere (no customs etc.)

Reminds me of the time I was in Rotterdam, I was in a shop and the owner asked if I wanted a receipt and i said "sure, why not" And he just looked confused and said "I don't know, why would you not?"

126

u/edgrlon May 28 '22

& you replied…?

217

u/TimebombChimp May 28 '22

I was thrown off because I didn't expect that reaction, so I just mumbled something about it being a colloquialism. Which just resulted in an even more confused look. The interaction was already awkward because whilst I was in the shop browsing, he was talking to me in Dutch and I was just point blank ignoring him because I assumed he was talking to his colleague, and I don't understand a word of Dutch.

58

u/darthvadercake May 28 '22

You didn't realise he was trying to talk to you? Surely he was looking at you and trying to get your attention?!

80

u/TimebombChimp May 28 '22

I was looking down at the display with my back turned to him. I'll also point out that this was my first day in Rotterdam. I've been to Amsterdam quite a few times and everybody speaks English, unless the natives are talking to one another. It's entirely different in Rotterdam and I was completely ignorant.

-24

u/darthvadercake May 28 '22

Amsterdam is a tourist city. People who work in the service industry have to speak a second language to get a job in a shop or restaurant there, it's how shops make their money. It's not a requirement in other dutch cities as it's not as tourist driven.

Sorry, I know it can be confusing or irritating. It's just that in your first story it's really not clear who is the embarassing / funny role in that story, you, or the shop clerk for not knowing as much English as you do.

I have meet a LOT of English people who do not speak any foreign languages and still deem to make fun of those who don't speak English as well as they do, or who get shocked or upset if someone can't understand them.

39

u/TimebombChimp May 28 '22

I was simply stating that the original post was similar to my anecdote, nobody is supposed to be the funny/embarrassing one. If anything it's me the foreigner who was the awkward one in the situation. It's simply a colloquialism that gets lost in translation, I'm not laughing at anyone for not being able to speak 100% perfect English.

16

u/Ollotopus May 28 '22

I wouldn't pay them too much heed. They're just being a mierenneuker.

-3

u/[deleted] May 28 '22

9

u/Whooptidooh May 28 '22

Being an ant fucker isn't meant to be an insult, unless you are actually an ant fucker. If you're Dutch, you should know that being called a mierenneuker isn't about insulting someone.

Oh for goodness sake.

You're giving someone a hard time because YOU misunderstood the gist of their comment, now you're going to cry because you've been identified as a nitpicker?

You have got to be trolling.

3

u/Environmental_Cat670 May 28 '22

I'm a transplant in Germany and even though my German is ok I still find myself totally ignoring people unless I know they are speaking TO me.

I've had a few funny/awkward situations in shops or at work because of it. Point being it can happen even if you do speak the language :/

15

u/ElHeistenberg May 28 '22

He could have been trying to make a dumb joke. "Why not" or "waarom ook niet" is also an expression in Dutch that gets used in the exact same context. Kinda like when you ask whether you "can" go to the toilet and the other replies with, "I don't know. Can you?"

-5

u/KravenSmoorehead May 28 '22

because you can be reimbursed at the airport for the taxes?

But if you got that coin to give to a foreign government, Mazel Tov?

10

u/Kwajoch May 28 '22

because you can be reimbursed at the airport for the taxes?

How does that work?

3

u/BraxForAll May 28 '22

There is normally an office at the airport.

Most people don't do it though because (depending on the country) it requires a lot of paperwork. You have to prove that you are a tax citizen of another country.

1

u/KravenSmoorehead 29d ago

At the airport in Dublin you just showed them some receipts and attested they were yours.

Saved me about 7 dollars, which was nice.

1

u/TimebombChimp May 28 '22

I never knew you could do that

375

u/beluuuuuuga May 27 '22

At this point you have to ship to them. They are so caring and kind lol!

This is so cute, sometimes sayings do not translate

31

u/rockthevinyl May 28 '22

But this one does translate to Spanish - “me temo”

-1

u/[deleted] May 28 '22

[deleted]

14

u/rockthevinyl May 28 '22

It’s a convo in English with someone living in Spain, so it’s safe to assume that the 2 languages at play are English and Spanish.

2

u/moodd May 28 '22

It does, though the Dutch translation isn't really used as casually. You can say "Ik ben bang van niet" just like "I'm afraid not".

Saying "Ik ben bang dat we niet internationaal verzenden" sounds more apologetic than you'd expect the statement to be, but it's still perfectly understandable.

0

u/darthvadercake May 28 '22

Ah, you're right, I forgot about that.

15

u/Ricky_Rollin May 28 '22

Aww that was adorable

It is for a Depop seller, which is what this is from. I recognize the font.

8

u/dronesclubmember May 28 '22

A common turn of phrase in the English language ≠ an attempt to sound fancy.

119

u/dat_fox01 May 28 '22

How is this an attempt to sound fancy? How does this apply to this subreddit at all??

51

u/kniev_101 May 28 '22

I don't even question it anymore the mods on this sub are literally asleep or something it's not monitored at all

9

u/AevilokE May 28 '22

Yeah this was posted here yesterday titled "To understand a sentence" and it fit so much better. It's not often that you see a repost literally one day later that is this bad

6

u/rlycreativename May 28 '22

Saying "I'm afraid" as a way of expressing mild regret is a very standard part of British English.

OP is probably a fairly uneducated United Statesian who thinks that anything British is "fancy".

11

u/rockthevinyl May 28 '22

They said “I’m afraid” instead of something less formal like “sorry,” and the buyer took it to mean that they had a fear of shipping to Spain.

43

u/PieDust May 28 '22

It's not really attempting to sound fancy tho, a phrase like 'im afraid' is just a speech pattern

5

u/rockthevinyl May 28 '22

The OP said it was an attempt to sound fancy so I’d wager a bet that it’s not part of their regular ‘speech pattern’

-3

u/outpan May 28 '22

They just posted it. It’s not their text interaction.

20

u/Arsewhistle May 28 '22

Saying 'I'm afraid' in this context is British slang and it's definitely not a formal way of speaking.

The person that originally posted this was British, and they posted it in r/casualuk just a few days ago. That post made a lot more sense; OP's just taken that post and given it a significantly worse title

6

u/Imposseeblip May 28 '22

Yeah, i saw it on casualuk, and it's irked me a little seeing it posted on here.

0

u/darthvadercake May 28 '22

It's a meme, not an attempt gone wrong.

This sub is meant to be for things like people trying to jump over a fence and falling down face first. Actual attempts at doing something, that are failing miserably.

Now people take the title and apply it to any funny picture they can find and spin it so it 'fits'

They should make a rule only videos can be submitted, it would probably help a lot. Most true attempts are on video not on an image.

1

u/indigoneutrino May 28 '22

I guess some people don’t use “I’m afraid” in the sense of “unfortunately” and think it sounds fancy when other people do. Probably completely normal to the person in the screenshot though and not an attempt to “sound fancy” at all.

6

u/monkpart9 May 28 '22

Aww but he seems like a sweet guy for being concerned haha

21

u/24204me May 27 '22

Ehehehehe. Wholesome.

5

u/Sunstorm84 May 28 '22 edited 29d ago

Ending apologetic sentences with “I’m afraid” is something so quintessentially British. It’s also related to the phrase “I’m afraid not”. Both are just formal/polite ways of saying NO.

It must seem bizarre to foreigners, especially those using Google translate or similar to understand.

Commonly said for example is “I can’t do that I’m afraid”, meaning “No I can’t do that.” but Google translates it literally to “I can’t do that, I’m scared/have fear”

24

u/forced_spontaneity May 27 '22

I’m really confused by the title here.

4

u/prematurely_bald May 28 '22

it’s like OP accidentally switched titles with another posts and left it up anyway

18

u/Obvious_Sea5182 May 27 '22

Probably scared of the spanish inquisition.

u/send_me_a_naked_pic May 28 '22

27

u/SpoonedAvenger May 27 '22

Posted to r/casualuk subreddit, and really mainly makes sense there.

12

u/Jive_turkeeze May 28 '22

People will literally take any video or picture and try to twist the title enough to fit here.

5

u/aheze May 28 '22

In this sub too right, except the old title was better

5

u/DeathDestroyer90 May 28 '22

This has the same energy of saying "I forgive you" when someone asks you to repeat yourself by saying "sorry?"

23

u/letskeepitcleanfolks May 27 '22

This is the worst post yet

10

u/Pale_Horsie May 28 '22

I had someone contact me asking if I was free that evening to meet for drinks.

Afraid not, I'm working tonight.

"Why are you afraid? Are you saying you're afraid of me? I don't know what your problem is, you don't have to be afraid of me. And you're meeting me tonight, so you're not going to work"

Christ man, maybe I should be?

How does someone not "do" international shipping? The process isn't even substantially different, you just have a bit more data to fill to aid customs valuation.
