Oh man, that makes me miss my dad. Even as a grown woman with 3 kids of my own, he'd bring me the fish he caught when I couldn't go with him. And he'd smoke and can a whole bunch of it for me and bring it over. He always apologized if he kept a walleye, or if we didn't catch anything.

Ive been fly fishing with my dad for since I was 11. 13 years later and hes in a lot worse shape. Full days on the river really beat him up. Im sorry you cant bring your old man fly fishing anymore; that would break my heart.

I know the prospect would absolutely light him up. He had Covid, which resulted in a heart attack, he fell, was badly injured as a result. He’s okayish now, “dad okay”. You know? I don’t want to have to constantly watch him navigate over the stones, worrying he may stumble and fall. It’d kill me with stress. But… then again, that is exactly what I did to him. Ugh.

Cherish every ounce of time you have. If it's not getting in the river, just maybe go to a pier, or beside a pond or something. Hell, even just watching some fishing shows. But seriously, I'm sorry for your dad, and I hope you get plenty of time in, because it's truly horrible not having the option anymore.

Well if hed love it and its in any way possible you should try for one last time. It is hard to balance on those rocks in waiters and all, so i wouldnt put any pressure on yourself. But im sure it would mean the world to him that the thought is even with you.

My FIL used to go fly fishing, but when he was no longer able we still made a trip to the area where he used to fish with him. He was happy to be able to see that place once more, show it to the grandkids, talk to a few fishers etc. He was grateful to return there, though it must have been bittersweet.

Those sound like wonderful precious memories! I didn't have a dad for most of my life. but my grandad replaced that role, and we fished so much in my childhood. he even carved me out my own personal wooden fishing pole. I still have it. God I miss him

I used to attend this yearly “Kid’s Fishing Clinic” in my youth. We met a couple of times a week for the summer months to learn to cast into tricky spots, study the dietary preferences of native fish, tie knots, water safety, etc. The most important lesson I took away was- “Catching any fish is a bonus to the blessing of having the good health and freedom to even be on the water”.

The program is an absolute gem! It’s totally free, funded by a small fortune left behind by a local fisherman who enjoyed teaching kids the hobby. There were limited spaces every year and you had to get to the parks department before the sun came up if you wanted a spot. Every kids was guaranteed $500 worth of gear and tackle in door prizes, there was a fishing tournament at the end of the summer, and a fish fry with what we had caught. I learned to tie flies. I learned how to cast under low hanging branches. I learned to clean and cook fish. But, learning that it’s about the journey and not the finish line is something that I can use in nearly every moment of life. ‘Twas a very wholesome experience.

Dances with Wolves was one of the first actual novels I read. I begged my parents to let me rent the movie afterwards and absolutely loved it (and also cried). I was scared to re-watch as an adult lest I ruin that old impression.
Oh my god does it hold up. There's a scene with Two-Socks (no spoilers) that had me bawling all over again, almost 3 decades later.

His character leads a wagon train on the Oregon Trail, won’t spoil anything but in the first episode his character is established pretty well with backstory. Highly recommend this series 10/10

Yep the first episode set the stage for the character. Throughout the series I hoped he would find different motivations, but in the end things finished off as he said they would. Trying to stay spoiler free, but yeah I was disappointed by his choices… yet they were not surprising.

I would agree on that point. My parent’s had a subscription to Paramount Plus so I borrowed it and decided to watch the series since I like westerns. Didn’t expect much and was pleasantly surprised!

My dad and I started ice fishing when I began college and rarely did we ever catch fish, but I’ve always enjoyed our drives and setting up the tent. We’d always wrap up as it got really dark out and ran back into the pickup to escape the wind and cold. We’d be out of breath, but always pulled off the ice with a “well that was fun!” This post makes me excited to go fishing again next winter, thanks OP!

I used to go fishing at my great grandmother's place growing up. She lived at a water village (like a wooden house on stilts in the river) and it was so awesome. There were days we caught a few and on the days where we didn't catch any because the fish got away or the little mud crab sniped itself free from the hook..it was still a nice experience. We exchanged stories about how strong the fish pulled on our line, how as a kid i was too grossed out to stick a worm to the hook so my dad did it with no complaints...really fun.

Just got back from floating Smith River. It sucked so bad. I was with seven other people all in their late 60s and they had their rafts so loaded down that we could barely move on the river. I was out pushing half of the time and the other half I was trying real hard to fish as we passed by one epic fishing hole after another. It was torture…. Ha ha

I took my 4 year old daughter fishing earlier this week. She held the rod for 3 minutes then buggered off and threw sticks into the water the rest of the time. As we were walking home and jabbered the whole time about how much fun it was and if we could go again sometime. Best day ever.

When my kids were young, I was a divorced dad constantly feeling guilty about not providing them with the same level of "quality time" than my ex was able to (she had a much better job)...but one day, out of the blue, my son said to me, "Dad, you know what the best part of our time with you is? We just talk."
Saved my freaking life, that did.

Haven't fished all that much, but I believe the moments during the trip are the best parts. I went fishing with friends and family, had nice conversations/moments/played around... Most of the times got drunk, at night we would have a bonfire and tchill whole philosophying... Fishing trips are great with the right people... Even went alone once and got into an interesting conversation with an old dude for 3 hours... Really calm and tchill talk too.

My pops and my uncle used to take me along when they went fishing. I used to sit in the bow and read books as they were doing their thing. After my dad passed when I was older, I went with my uncle a few times a summer and handled the oars for him. Both have been gone for a while now. I miss them both so much.

Man.. reading the comments, its clear that the peace that fishing brings is something that transcends race, creed, nationality, political inclinations, etc.
My treasured memories are fishing with my grandad in a old motorboat on the Texas Gulf Coast. Catching specs and redfish. But there are comments on here from people all over the world.
I guess the internet simultaneously brings an amazing blessing along with the well-known and terrible curse.
